This Is Your FBI Empty This Is Your FBI

Post by greybelt 1/2/2017, 3:40 pm

Greetings all and happy 2017...

Today we begin posting This Is Your FBI -- I've been working on this set for over a year, and there are periods where nothing seems to get done on it. So I figured the best way to make sure I finish it is to start posting it.

There are many sets of this series floating around in 32kps -- and the sound is not the best. And, there are often multiple versions of episodes, including AFRS and some syndicated shows that often sound great. It seems that there was a syndication effort in the late 1960s or early 1970s or both.

Most of the run was sponsored by Equitable Life Assurance Society, which was a big deal. The insurance industry was not a national advertiser at that time, so Equitable's leap was really pioneering. We take it for granted now with Flo from Progressive, Allstate's good hands, and Nationwide being on our side. At the time, only rich people had insurance, it was believed, so Equitable's ads were intended to also educate, not just drum up sales leads for the local insurance offices that represented them.
Basic company background is at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This was one of radio's longest running and highest rated series, but it seems to get no respect, no respect I tell ya. This was the FBI series that had the approval of J Edgar Hoover himself, who appeared on the program with a brief pre-recorded comment twice in the surviving programs. A few times they read an important personal letter from him.

This was unlike The FBI in Peace and War which carefully noted in its announcements that it was not affiliated with the organization. FBIiP&W was a New York show, so if you want to hear the cast of CBS Radio Mystery Theater when they were young, especially Ralph Bell, FBIiP&W is your series.

No, TiYFBI was a real Hollywood show, and you hear some of the town's best actors in the shows, often uncredited. It was a bigger budget show than FBIiP&W, for sure. So if some of those voices sound like you heard them on Suspense or 1950s CBS shows at some time, you did.

Many early collectors confused FBIiP&W and TiYFBI, and that became a source of a lot of misdated and mistitled programs in the early years of the hobby.

This is a great chance for Cobaltia to join in with photos and news clips and all other kinds of support materials. It's an underappreciated part of the golden age, and it's worth doing it well. I've gone through about five different sets of shows to cobble this together, and the series still needs some help here and there. Jump in and assist if you can. Mr. Purvis will put in a good word for you when he sees Mr. Hoover at their lunch meeting.

Here's the first offering...

The "Geez" sent me a note about that first posting... it seems that the program listed as the audition might be in error -- I'm checking it out. Sure, I make this big deal about the series and the first think I post is a mistake? What a way to start 2017! Smile

Hi greybelt

It would appear that the audition show you posted is the same as the one I have in my collection, but upon review, they both appear to be 52-03-07 362 The Skyway Man.

Does anyone have the correct version in their collection?

Best regards
