Re: Suspense Upgrades
Upgrades have been posted for this episode somewhat recently, but I did find a better sounding recording in these reels. I cleaned things up a bit and it is now UPGRADE-3 (which means it is the fourth copy I have had in the set). There is some background noise from the tape that we have to tolerate in the process, so we have to figure out whether or not the recording is better with that attribute compared to the prior copy or not. I thought I'd play around with some sound processing software, and that is the second recording listed below. Sound processing requires a light and surgical touch... it's something I'm getting better at and I suspect I will always be getting better at it, much like my taking of karate, where as you get "smarter" at it you also realize how many tricks and skills you don't know and you may never know. I've have some horrid LQ stuff come through that I have been able to make more listenable but they are still LQ. Those particular episodes will be coming up soon. Enjoy these in the meantime and let me know which you prefer.

Clippings for this episode were posted earlier with UPGRADE-2.
There is still evidence that this episode was supposed to be done in 1950 with John Garfield. Though he had appeared on Suspense earlier, by 1950 he was being associated with Communists, which he denied. Many attributed his early death in May 1952 at age 39 to the stress of such allegations. He did have diagnosed heart problems, however, well before the issues began. Spier was producer at that time, and either Auto-Lite or CBS executives (or a solitary executive) stopped the plans for the script and Garfield. It is believed that Lewis did the episode at this particular moment, starring himself, to thumb his nose at a cowardly CBS.
We just received some upgrades the are earlier broadcast dates than today's post -- we will post these starting tomorrow and then get back into sequence in a few days.
We had earlier mentioned that one way of detecting east coast performances was that from August 23, 1945 through August 7, 1947, FBI in Peace and War followed Suspense in those time zones. FBIiP&W did not have a repeat performance. Many recordings, if there was still time, mentioned to stay tuned for FBIiP&W, indicating that this was an east coast broadcast, definitively. If there is no mention, it can be either, because the announcement could be left out if the director believed time was running out. We recently received a script from that era that shows how it appeared:
Note how it's referred to as the "early show," with no mention of geography affected. The announcement usually was made in the very last moments of the show, but it has been heard earlier. These are the ones that have been identified to date; there have been corresponding west coast recordings found for most of them. When you listen to Suspense in that August 1945 to August 1947 period, please keep an ear out for the announcement, and let us know if it's an addition to what we have found so far.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
The next few show postings will be a little out of date order until we catch up to where we were... The reels are almost all done...
For the completists... we have better copies of this episode, but this is a KQW San Jose, CA aircheck that we did not have

The following copy has been de-noised. You tend to lose some crispness in the sound and perhaps introduce some encoding artifacts, but this may sound better to some Cobaltian ears

Re: Suspense Upgrades
A nice copy of Slow Burn has been elusive for years, and there was a good one in these transferred reels, but it suffered from tape hiss... and the tape wasn't long enough to capture the entire show. The last line or so of a PSA announcement about Brotherhood Week was missing. The PSA was restored from another copy, noted in the file name, adjusted to sound close to the tape recording. The tape hiss was loud enough to attempt "denoising" through some sound processing software, and it seemed to come out quite well with a minimum of distortion and processing remnants. Let me know what you think!

We add another program to the list that had a changed name before broadcast. In this case, it was "Treasure Hunt" before it got the more intriguing name we know it as. No newspaper got the change in time -- and notice of the change may not have been sent.
This is another episode written by "Christopher Anthony," whom we now know is actually William N. Robson, staying under the radar from the CBS execs for any variety of reasons. Repeat performances identify him as the author. "Christopher" and "Anthony" were the names of his oldest sons.

This episode is from a period when Lewis was doing some experimentation with the Suspense format. They didn't always work. This one might be the best of the musical ones (Frankie and Johnny, Tom Dooley are others) and that's probably because Frank Lovejoy, who always seemed to elevate program quality no matter the series, was involved. The others seem to fall flat (musical pun intended).
The show is based on the ballad written after the wreck of a mail train in Virginia in 1903. The record sold millions of copies in the mid-1920s.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Before our regular posting, here is something just found on a reel that a generous collector on the OTRR FB page sent me. It's another version of Blue Eyes. this one with a rushed network ID at the end. So we now likely have east and west versions, but no clue which is which. I didn't hear a pitch for listening to FBIiP&W on either of them, but maybe I missed that (perhaps a different pair of Cobaltian ears will find it if they did one). The other recording is in better sound, so this is a recording for my fellow completists.
