Ethel Merman... a Broadway favorite because she was trained to sing in a theater without the kinds of amplification technology we have today. Merman was a really big name on Broadway, so getting her on Suspense was newsworthy. Her movie performances from the 1930s and 1940s and TV appearances in the 1950s brought her to a much wider audience. This is another example of Suspense casting music performers in mystery roles. Whenever they did, they usually got more coverage in newspapers than in weeks with other guests from more traditional performing backgrounds, and with Merman, they got even more, likely drawing more women listeners in the audience this week than usual.

Hunting Trip has the network ID at the end. It could be part of an EC/WC pair, or the better recording we have just has the ID cut off.

Feast of the Furies has a delayed network ID at the end, and we already have the one that has it without delay, which is in better sound. Yet another pair in a likey EC/WC situation, but we have no clue which is EC and which is WC. Hate when that happens! This also has an annoying change i speed at the open, probably from the tape coming off its path. When we collected on reels we had all kinds of problems that we really could not fix. Over half of the reels I have been getting are off speed, which is now easily fixed. But these small incidental problems require a lot of effort. If the recording was in better sound, or was a missing episode, it would be worth expending that effort. If you've only collected digitally, listening to this problem will clearly demonstrate why digital is better -- and you might get a chuckle out of the way it sounds... I did!

Re: Suspense Upgrades
I've been trying to get better copies of this for years -- these are better but still not what I'd like.
Suspense_1954-05-10_LastDaysOfJohnDillinger_wVanHeflin POSS UPGRADE-2 BETTER SOUND SOME HISS.mp3
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I did some sound processing on it when I was playing with an evaluation version of Sound Soap. It came out pretty well, and then I did more processing with Audacity to get some of the distortion out of the quieter sections. I may try it again one day -- but I hope a cleaner AFRS copy eventually appears. I decided not to buy Sound Soap and instead started using MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab. (It's already a discontinued product and is now Soundforge Audio Lab at a much higher price). Perhaps one day I'll take another shot at this recording using that. I've had a lot of fun working with the software, but I learned quickly that only about half of the time are shows really cleaned up and the other half no matter how much you try, they can still sound bad. But I think this worked okay here... I will keep posting both "cleaned up" files and more aggressively processed ones when it seems to have been worthwhile.
