Don McLaughlin was David Harding... Counterspy! He was an enormously busy NYC radio and television soap opera actor.

I've advised Greybelt that there's a small problem with 1960-06-26 Daisy Chain. The UPGRADE version as posted cuts out the first minute of the story. I restored it. The "join" isn't too bad. Here's a link if you're interested.

This episode was written by “Jonathan Bundy,” who is really Jack Johnstone, one of the later radio era’s most important writers/producers/directors, and of course beloved for Johnny Dollar. These are two fascinating blogposts about him. When radio ended, Johnstone just walked away...

Title change! This episode's original title was 2461, not 2462! It makes me wonder if it was originally planned to be performed before the end of the year and was delayed until the start of the new one.

1962-02-04 Tampa FL Times

This is another episode penned by Jack Johnstone under the pseudonym Jonathan Bundy.

Who was Ivor Francis? He was a Canadian actor who found some success in television, Broadway, and movies as a character actor. He was also an acting teacher. At the time of this performance, he was probably working on Broadway.

You may know him more for his daughter, Genie Francis, who was "Laura" on the General Hospital soap opera for ABC-TV. In 1978, the series was having problems and the storyline of "Luke and Laura" got the show back on track. Their wedding in 1981 was the most watched soap opera episode in history.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]  She later married Jonathan Frakes, known most for his role as Cmdr. Riker on Star Trek TNG.

This is a re-used script from The Mysterious Traveler, “The Man Who Tried to Save Lincoln” broadcast on February 7, 1950. Many of Robert Arthur's scripts were re-used in the New York Suspense productions. One can only imagine how many scripts Arthur could have re-used on MT, Sealed Book, Strange Dr. Weird, and others, had there been word processing with search and replace in his era.

Here's a trivia question for you: Who was the one actor appeared in both of the productions? That was Ralph Bell.

More trivia: The CBS Radio Mystery Theater of September 26, 1975, Assassination in Time, also dealt with a trip back to Lincoln's time. That was written by Ian Martin, star of this Suspense episode.

Lincoln has been a favorite of time travel television programs. I first saw it on Irwin Allen's Time Tunnel, the fun sci-fi show known for its plot holes (and whenever you travel in time, your clothes get clean for the next episode) and NBC's recent series, Timeless.

Hate to be a stickler here, but hey, it's my job.

Folks, please remember we cannot host radio or television shows after 1964 at the Cobalt. Even if they are relevant to threads and worthy additions to our collections, we have a line drawn in the sand about cut-off dates to ensure we don't get called on the carpet legally.

It's one of the few rules we need to adhere to, to safeguard our little haven under the stars. Just a little reminder.
Jeff

Hmm, the Traveler episode "I Died Last Night" has a totally different script from the Suspense episode "You Died Last Night." Also, "You Died" mentions the Berlin Wall, which didn't exist in 1947. If it is a re-used Traveler script, then it was updated with the Berlin Wall reference for 1962.

Can someone do a side-by-side listen to check dialogue? Scripts, though re-used, do go through some editing to update references and tailor for the different series (such as character names, as in when Jeff Regan scripts were re-used in the early YTJD series). I was relying on RadioGoldindex for my first pass at this. But listening is obviously the best thing to do if both programs are available.

There is a version of this episode in circulation with commercials that is in slightly lesser sound quality.

1962-04-22 Tampa Bay Times

This is another “Jonathan Bundy” Suspense script, but this time, it's not original. It's Jack Johnstone re-using his very own 5-part Johnny Dollar script from September 1956 with the same name. It's obviously adapted from 5 fifteen minute programs, about 50 minutes of unduplicated drama sans opens and closes and dialog related to recapping the action, down to just less than half that.

Kamashek appears to be a name concocted by Johnstone. He was also good at creating names of poisons in YTJD that sounded like they were real, but were not. Seems like he’s just as good at naming Egyptian pharaohs.
