This day in Suspense history...
October 21
1948 Give Me Liberty
1954 Rave Notice
Today's recording is for the completists among us. This is a different AFRS recording than had been provided previously. That one was from disc and sounds slightly better, but this is a pretty good recording.

The date of this broadcast has sometimes been in question. Some of the newspaper clippings don't agree with the actual date of broadcast. This series of weeks in Fall 1958 was messed up with Suspense changing from Sundays to Saturdays and back to avoid pre-emptions by football, both college and pro, and it probably drove the CBS public relations and the newspaper folks crazy. This online spreadsheet straightens it out and has been verified using scripts and other resources.

We have one more week of Suspense audio ahead of us. I have lots of show history that I will post when all that is done.
I'm not sure what series will be next in terms of audio files. Suggestions for the next series always appreciated!
I've been trying to write my Casey Crime Photographer book, so I'm likely to start a thread with that. I do have others that I have been working on with fellow Cobaltians, but we could use some assistance in posting.
Found another Suspense TV episode on YouTube, Mutiny Below.

In "Statement of Fact", Cathy Lewis reprised the role she'd played when this script was originally used on "On Stage - With Cathy and Elliott Lewis", on May 14, 1953.

1947 The X-Ray Camera
1956 The Doll (first of the Robson series)
1960 Night Man
This is another "missing" AFRS version. It is a nice sound upgrade compared to the network recording.

Cajon Pass is a real place [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
... and for those for whom the geography of Suspense has meaning, it's 77 miles south of Red Mountain
The script is by John Maller. He is a "one-hit-wonder" as this is his only radio script. He has no entries in IMDb or any other resources for novels or short stories.
Regarding the question of the true show title the other day, it has been verified that the correct title is The Dealings of Mr. Markham.

1946 Dame Fortune
Some network copies of this episode have a patched opening, just FYI -- I've removed it in my set. This "missing" AFRS version sounds better than the circulating network programs. This was originally broadcast as "Hitch-hike Poker" on 1948-09-16.

This is the episode by Santa Monica, CA chemistry teacher Joseph Hudock. He is one of the "one-hit-wonder" authors of a Suspense play. Spoils for Victor was first presented in 1946 and also presented on Phillip Morris Playhouse. We're still trying to figure out where Hudock was in 1946 and what his profession was at that time. It seems like he started teaching in the early 1950s. No luck yet.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
"Everything Will Be Different" is truly chilling, especially now that we now know so much more about living with someone who has an addiction.
I also hear something more in Cathy Lewis's performance. Her character's lines about the sadness of her first marriage have the added poignancy of Cathy's personal experience, because her own marriage had ended in 1958, possibly because her husband was a work-aholic.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Robson wrote the play, and it likely has many autobiographical elements. He was in his second marriage, at this time to actress June Wilkins. They had two children, Christopher and Anthony (hence his blacklist pseudonym "Christopher Anthony"). I don't know when they divorced, but it was around this time.
Wilkins died at age 53 in 1972, and the notes I found about the causes of her death were "chronic liver disease and alcoholism."
Happier times, first marriage...
Tuthill and Robson divorced in 1940. In 1941, rumors of an impending marriage to Wilkins swirled in some gossip columns, but were denied...
... but it came true the next year, and was reported in this little old item from Ed Sullivan's column, Little Old New York...
In 1962, Robson married a third time, to Shirley. They were married until his death, 33 years later. They met when she was a student in the classes he was teaching while he was also working at Voice of America. They had one child together.
This episode may have been the convergence of shared experiences, one via the microphone, and the other via the typewriter.

This day in Suspense history...
October 27
1942 The Lord of the Witch Doctors
1949 Momentum
1952 Allen in Wonderland (always loved this one for the special Larry Thor appearance as an unnamed cop... but we all know it's Lt. Danny Clover from BIMB, which Lewis was also producing)
1957 The Country of the Blind
Today's recording is a "missing" AFRS version. Its sound is better than the circulating network version. This recording is complete, while the network version has a clipped open and is missing its closing credits and sign-off.
Suspense_1959-10-04_Room203_wEllenMcRae AFRS.mp3
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
1959-10-04 NY Times
1959-10-04 Tampa Bay FL Times
1959-10-04 Boston MA Globe
1959-10-04 Knoxville TN News-Sentinel
Paul Roberts was the producer of Suspense when the series moved back to New York after so many years in Hollywood. He was a producer and director of soap operas and other programs such as Indictment and the New York productions of CBS Radio Workshop.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
He had a great desire to be successful on Broadway and theater productions. This is a play that he directed ... featuring the star of today's Suspense episode...
They would fall in love... and marry...
Paul Roberts produced and directed Suspense from 1959-08-30 to 1960-11-27. In that time, Ellen would appear on Suspense seven times...
1959-10-04 Room 203
1960-01-10 The Long Night (this is the home invasion story, not the aviation story)
1960-04-10 Two Horse Parlay
1960-06-12 Elementals
1960-10-16 Inferno
1960-11-06 Green Lorelei
1960-11-20 Night on Red Mountain
But the marriage, and, it seems, the possibility of other Suspense appearances, would come to an end in 1961. Ellen would remarry and would become famous under a different name, Ellen Burstyn. She would have a remarkable career, and become one of only 24 actors to win an Emmy, an Oscar, and a Tony! [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Burstyn may be the most awarded actor to ever appear on Suspense. She had 6 Oscar nominations, 6 Emmy nominations, and 1 Tony nomination. Agnes Moorehead, for example, had 4 Oscar nominations and 7 Emmy nominations. But all of Burstyn's honors came well after her very brief radio career and more than a half-decade after the Suspense star casting ended. Moorehead's awards were in the thick of a well-established and high profile career. Oh, Ellen, Suspense knew you "when you wuz nuttin'" as they would say in Brooklyn.
