EC and WC shows exist -- they're virtually impossible to tell apart. The timing of the dialog and inflection are so close I've had to rely only on the labeling of the shows that I'm very confident came from the conscientious recording and documentation of the discs. We have nice copies of EC and WC so this one may never be in the official set.

Re: Suspense Upgrades

Post by greybelt on 8/12/2016, 9:14 am

I was reminded again yesterday about how important it is to get into older reel collections. It turned out I had known of a collector for many years but I did not know that he was recording off the air in the late 1950s. In my search to replace a bad sounding late 1950s Suspense episode, he had the program because he recorded it off the air. And not just that, it's been his recording that had been circulating in the hobby for decades. The sound had deteriorated as it was in circulation as reel collectors made copies of copies of copies of copies adding tape hiss and other problems. The digital copy everyone seems to have has defects added by being encoded into mp3 at a low bitrate. I did get the copy of the program, and it does sound like a home recording off a narrow-banded AM station, but it is far better than what is circulation. I'll post it when it's time to do so since I'm trying to keep the posts in chronological order.

He also confirmed that at that time in the 1950s recording tape was so expensive that he would cut commercials and other items considered extraneous at the time. This was the practice of nearly all of the home recorder collectors at that time.

Luckily many of the shows from that era also have AFRTS copies that have surfaced over the years. But there's nothing like hearing a full network program from that era, and they are especially interesting when they have ads for products that no longer exist (for Suspense it was Alpine cigarettes, 4-Way Cold Tablets, and many others) and also have clips of news from that time.

So be on the lookout! Especially for older reel collections! Don't assume just because there are mp3 or other copies that there's no use in reviewing what's on those reels.

This week I also learned again to be grateful to those who collect and record transcriptions. What a difference in sound! And there were some rare items located in the process.

It was the same way when VCRs first appeared. Tape was very expensive, so commercials were cut... unless you had two vcrs you had to be quick on the remote when coming back from a commercial. My brother sister and I used to go in to buy a case to save money. I have a couple tapes from the 70s that are nothing more than clips from various shows. Gotta find those and transfer them to DVD.

I have an extensive collection of TV shows with all the commercials intact--over 600 VHS and Beta tapes. Oh the years it will take me to turn them into DVDs. The same with my reels--I have several hundred hours of shows I recorded in the 1990s-2000s, jazz concerts and local shows, in addition to all the radio reels I bought from Rex Bills and others. My *Earplay* collection is the one being circulated by dealers who charge for them (bastitches) and are on file at archive.org. Big thanks go to Boxcar Willie for helping make some transcriptions from tape.

One day I might be able to get them turned over into MP3s, but not so others can make money. . . .
Jeff

My sister's got one of those dvd/vcr combos. So if I can find the tapes, it's just a matter of dropping in the tape and a blank disk. Then go in and put in the chapter headings... that's the hard part, trying to enter text with a remote control... worse than a cell phone. ;-)
