The recordings we are always seeking are AFRS/AFRTS versions of the network shows, which closely resemble the original network broadcasts. The shows above would be in that format.

There are many AFRS recordings yet to be found that are not listed here. We have often found them in older digital collections and reel collections from the 1970s and 1980s that were not digitized. If you find any transcriptions or other recordings and want to check if they are “new” please contact me.
============================================
AFRTS late 1970s Versions

There are versions of Suspense that were released in the late 1970s and early 1980s by AFRTS that are of a very odd format. These shows are of interest as well and can be identified from certain characteristics. These shows are strangely edited, and you can hear pieces of Suspense openings and closings that have been compiled together. The opening bells of Suspense as heard in the early years of the program, with the voice of “The Man in Black” are often matched with recordings of dramatic performances from the 1950s. The name of the script is usually edited out, and there is usually no mention of cast members or production crews. Sometimes dialog is edited for timing purposes. To date, we have more than 25 of these programs.

This is the list of those episodes that have been found:
1942-09-02 Hitchhiker w/ Orson Welles AFRTS RU-11-0-1048.mp3

AFRS expert Thom Whetston [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] sent me this note about disc codes:

The RU designation means a "Radio Unit". This is only important because these discs were bicycled from station to station. There were a lot fewer of them pressed. The other part is the number after 14-0 would mean week 14 of either 197_0_ or 198_0_ . Sometimes it was calendar weeks. Sometimes it was fiscal year weeks. So, something like RU 18-9 or RP 10-1 is pretty important to know if available.

I now have the details about streaming my presentation

On Saturday, September 16 at 11am Eastern US time, go to
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
and see it streamed -- it's best to log in earlier to be sure it's all working.

A day or so later there will be an archive at the same site or at YouTube. Check here for details after the event.

I will post links to my Powerpoint slide deck -- they will be posted on Scribd.com after the presentation.

The audio will also be recorded by me as a backup and that file will be posted, too.

We're less than a month-and-a-half away!

Post by greybelt on 9/5/2017, 9:33 am

I have gotten word that a Cobaltian from NJ and Geezer are each going to the convention!

ALSO

My short little book about the lost episodes of the long-running series "Suspense" (1942-1962) has just been made available at Amazon! [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The cover that's on it now is just for the convention -- and the book will be cheaper there ($10 -- if the copies arrive on time!!). So if you want it with this particular cover (rather than a generic spooky landscape one that will soon replace it) now's the time to get it from Amazon -- or best to get it at the convention.

My wife is asking why I am spending a tank of gas and the price of a hotel room plus admission ticket in order to save $4.95 on a book. I told her it was the only way I could get Joe to autograph it. Her look in response contained more of stupefaction than satisfaction.... I thought it was a FINE answer. scratch

Looks like it is going to be a great show, even Dawn Wells is going to be there. My first major crush as a young boy from the 60's. I envy all who get to attend. Wish I had the funds. Did order the book from Amazon. - Tom

Ok folks -- all confirmed for the missing episode announcement and a recreation of a missing episode to be announced on Saturday.

Unfortunately, "The Geez" has been Irma'd (not my friend, the hurricane) out of attendance. He is fine but travel is so messed up he can't make it.

So, on Saturday, September 16 at 11am Eastern US time, go to
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and the stream should be working!

Hi folks! I'm waiting for my flight back home and have edited the audio files from today's "Missing Suspense Episodes" presentation at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention.

Unfortunately the live streaming did not work today -- the video files will be up on YouTube in about two weeks.

I left some of my "warm-up" at the beginning of the recording because the crowd was into it. We had a great time!

My slides are in a PDF at
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The audio in mp3 32kps is at
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The presentation in mp3 128kps is at
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

My slides are at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Among the highlights of today's events was a presentation of the Great American Songbook by Steve Darnall, and a killer rendition of Lights Out "The Chicken Heart" episode by the Metro Washington OTR Club -- one of the best recreations I've seen (and heard!)

Kudos to all, and it was great to connect with OTR friends, some of whom I had not seen for 30 or more years!

Let's make it a point for as many of us as possible to attend next year's event.

This was the big news announced during my presentation about "The Missing Suspense" episodes at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (Sept. 16, 2017):

Blue Hours has posted their version of the missing Suspense "Fury and Sound" at their site
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
This is the link to the specific episode
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Many thanks to producer John Alsedek who got the show out of final production so I could announce its availability in my presentation. I heard the final cut prior to my presentation, and I liked it! The script is a little odd (when you read the short story as it was presented in Suspense Magazine or watch the TV version on The Unexpected you grasp that -- and the strange personality of the villain is captured well.)

That's good news -- and here's "gooder" news -- a missing Suspense -- "This Was a Hero" -- is the third program on Jerry Haendiges' Old Time Radio Classics podcast as of Sunday, September 17, 2017.
This is the page where the current show is always posted
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
This is the stream address where this specific one is posted
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Jerry plays FOUR uncirculated shows - the other three are
BLONDIE Episode 476 11-10-48 "Blondie's Historical House“ (Rehearsal of 11-08-49)
GREAT GILDERSLEEVE Episode 154 1-28-45 "Aunt Hattie Is Due To Arrive"
SUSPENSE (as mentioned)
SGT. PRESTON Episode 1104 6-9-53 "Tugboat Skipper Mamie"

Thanks to Jerry again for coordinating the program with my presentation and for mentioning me on his program!

Post by greybelt on 10/12/2017, 9:05 pm

Ol' Greybelt will be interviewed on YesterdayUSA. starting at 11:30pm Eastern time on Friday, October 13, by collectors Walden Hughes, and John & Larry Gassman. Call in with questions! The number is 714-545-2071.

Their show starts at 10:30 with some conversation with the director of today's Glenn Miller band, and then Larry and Walden play an interview recorded earlier this week with actress Marsha Hunt on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

Then I'm up at 11:30 for a conversation about Suspense. They'll play two of my favorite episodes, "Three O'Clock" and "Fragile: Contents Death." Then they'll close the show with a Lux that featured Marsha Hunt.

To hear the show go to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] -- because the show is live, it will be on both of their red and blue network streams. You can also use the TuneIn mobile app to get to listen to the program.

Greybelt, you have a great voice!  If you ever want to do any intros to Suspense episodes I think you would be fantastic!  I run four a month on my podcast and would love to have you intro all/some/any of them.  Think about it!  Heck, you could use it as a platform to get the word out to find more lost Suspense episodes.

P.S. Can I run any of these interviews/presentations from this page over on one of my Podcasts?  If not that is fine, of course, but it might be nice for folks to hear a little about what is going on in at least one corner of the OTR universe.  Thanks for doing all of these upgrades over the years as well!

Today begins the posting of over 200 sound upgrades, "missing," or low circulation versions of this series. Yes, we'll be here for a while. I wasn't expecting this.

It's been a very interesting few months. It was not long ago that I had run out of new posts. Because of the publication of my little book "The Missing Suspense Episodes" [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , my presentation at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (audio with some silly warm-up [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and slides [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ) and my appearance on YesterdayUSA [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , a flood of recordings came my way for evaluation. This has been one of the most gratifying times for me in my collecting experience. Thanks so much to everyone!

And now, a favor. I'm looking for newspaper clippings and other support information for the episodes that will be posted. I have a few of my own that I will add when I have them. Because of the time lag between the mailing of episode information to newspapers and the actual broadcast date, you can find out about changes in schedules, lead roles, and titles. I mean, who knew that "Sorry, Wrong Number" was originally "She Overheard Death Speaking" other than through these "mistakes" caused by the time-consuming process of the mail and print production? Just yesterday, I found this Jimmy Stewart fan site [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] which documented that the episode "Consequence" was originally titled "Revenge." The site has the short story of that name on which the radio script was based, with a scan of the story as it appeared in Collier's. It's amazing what's out there and what can be found by fortuitous accident in Google and various data bases nowadays. These give great insight into the productions and how fluid and sometimes chaotic things must have been leading up to broadcast.

So here's the first one of the many... Suspense was still in New York, about to move to Hollywood a few weeks later. At this time, it seems the show had no critical acclaim, with reviewers opining that it was really no different than other sponsorless dramas. This is not my favorite run of the series (the first year of Auto-Lite is). It was heavily influenced by the British writer John Dickson Carr and his style of plodding along mysteries with some screaming here and there. Perhaps others feel differently; if so, join in with your comments. It's early Suspense taking its baby steps to becoming a golden age of radio institution and that's all that really matters.

Just a note in the file names -- "UPGRADE-7" means that there have been 8 versions of this recording in my master set since 2005.
