Today is an upgrade of a network/AFRS pair.

A story related to Sinatra but not Suspense that may add some background about what scheduling Sinatra was like. I was blessed to meet NBC writer Ernest Kinoy over 40 years ago when he lived in Yonkers NY, as I did, and he allowed this college kid to interview him for an OTR fanzine. He said that he and his writing partner George Lefferts were assigned to Rocky Fortune. The scheduling was "rocky." They would occasionally get a knock on the door at the writers room at NBC with a guy saying "Frank wants to do a show tomorrow" and would then have to rush a script ready, whether they had started one or not, to record in the studio a day or so later. Lefferts confirmed this when I spoke with him at the 2011 FOTR convention, but that they both became very friendly with Sinatra in the process of doing the show. When Sinatra had his breakdown over Ava Gardner and was in the hospital for a short time, Lefferts would visit him there. Kinoy and Lefferts were used to working on the fly with some of their other series, too. When they would get writers block, they'd start paging through the NYC papers for crime stories (real-life often had plotlines and circumstances that they could not generate on their own because they would not believe that someone would actually do what they really did!). One of their most dog-eared books in the office was a compilation of information about poisons. Some episodes of Dr. Sixgun were based ideas from operas that one of them had seen that previous weekend. Working on programs that featured larger-than-life personalities, and their crazy schedules, was a challenge but they had a sense that they were working on something very special.

This is the announcement of “Night Man” paired with the Sinatra signing for the planned November 30 episode of "To Find Help." That episode was delayed to January 1945.

That's not in the plans at all. So far I have been able to find free space. The Hubic site offers 25GB for free so we're good.
In this free forum software, there are limited options to engaging with fellow members, and on the free side of some of the file hosting services there is no download tracking, so I'm trying to gauge the interest level in this thread.

There are two recordings of this episode in circulation. This one starts with “Now, Roma Wines presents...” while another has “Now, the Roma Wine Company of Fresno, California, presents...” They are probably East and West coast versions, but we have no clue which is which.
This show had a name change prior to broadcast, but after the press releases had been sent. The original title was “Murder is Simple.” Not a single newspaper had the final title, which means that it was settled just within a couple (or so) days of broadcast, or maybe just hours.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Keenan Wynn played Joseph Eichner and Cathy Lewis played Miss Lansen. Also appearing were Wally Maher, John McIntire, Lurene Tuttle, and Joseph Kearns.
Trivia: Wynn mentions he'd like to be as successful a writer as Agatha Christie or Leslie Charteris. I know who Charteris was, being a Saint fan, but I didn't know he was well known enough to be used as an example of a famous author.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
I ran across a news clipping about Cary Grant and Conrad Binyon
Google to the rescue! I found the image and then learned that it is owned by Getty Images. Click on the link and you can see it on their site. That site had the details. It was Black Curtain on November 30, 1944.

If the image is elusive and does not show up right away, try this one

I could not figure out what episode it could have been, but from the date I was suspicious. RadioGoldindex did not list this combination of casting.Google to the rescue! Re: Suspense Upgrades
Hi there, everybody.
In reviewing the earlier post of Suspense_1944-11-16_TheDeadOfTheNight_wRobertCummings UPGRADE-4 a number of flaws were detected. Greybelt was able to provide the "master" recording he had as a Flac file and I set to work on clearing up the duplicated dialog and long "dead air" spots along with a few other, less significant tweeks.
Here we have a repaired MP3 version and the corrected Flac file

Re: Suspense Upgrades
A young collector and artist has made a podcast episode about the history of Suspense. For someone just getting into the history of the series, it's a good listen.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
For me, I had forgotten some of the recordings I had with interviews of Spier and Robson done on WTIC radio in the 70s. He excerpted some of those in the broadcast along with some interesting comments by Hans Conreid. I was glad I listened!

Here’s another cast change. Who was supposed to be the lead? Cary Grant! That certainly would have had a much different feel to this episode. It appears that some newspapers got the news in time. Here it is again, Joseph Cotten bails them out.
Grant’s second time on Suspense was a reprise of Black Curtain, done to patch a hole in the schedule when Sinatra’s appearance was delayed. It went well, and another appearance was booked.
Grant would appear three more times on Suspense but not until 1946 in Black Path of Fear, the first Auto-Lite show in 1948, The Last Chance (a missing episode), and in 1950 On a Country Road.
But they kept trying to get him in early 1945... stay tuned...

There’s no indication in newspapers that he had been cast for anything other than
Most Dangerous Game. So the plan may have always been for this script, but
the original date was changed to February 1.
1945-02-01 Decatur IL Daily Review
1945-02-01 Indianapolis IN News
The replacement of Grant is noted. But the big news is that the real Elsa Maxwell
was not in the commercials! They had an actress taking the part. They could
have at least done the Gangbusters wording … “And now, by proxy...”
Next they’ll tell us that in the Auto-Lite ads “Hap” was not a real person!
1945-02-01 Central NJ Home News
This clip mentions only Cotten, with the common misspelling of his name in
the first sentence, but then correct in its second mention.
1945-02-01 Minneapolis Star
The change was also made early enough that the ads for the show
could correctly identify Cotten as the lead.
