Re: Suspense Upgrades
Two versions today... don't know if we have an East/West situation or something else. One mentions This is Your FBIThe FBI in Peace and War and the other doesn't. I have not been able to check if the TiYFBIFBIiP&W time varied depending on the coast. Can someone in the group take a look?

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Ah yes, The Cage, which would be split into the two The Menagerie episodes in the first season. So he was really really there in the beginning!

Re: Suspense Upgrades
The show mentioned at the end is actually The FBI in Peace and War (TIYFBI was on Blue/ABC). Peace and War was on right after Suspense in the east, at 8:30 EST. In the west the order was reversed, so the first version would be west coast.

There are two versions of this episode. After the middle commercial, one has the line “Does defendant wish to make...” while this one has “The defendant will rise.” There is no clue as to why the change was made. This is likely an East / West difference, with no means that I can detect to determine which is which. I stumbled on this one years ago doing a spot check sound comparison. There may be other episodes like this that have not been identified yet.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
The episode that earned Suspense the 1946 Peabody award was Dead Ernest -- if you thought the premise of the story was unlikely, read this report about "Dead Gonzalo" which just happened LAST WEEK!
Like Ernest, he had an epileptic-like condition, was declared dead, and was on the autopsy table...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
… unlike Ernest, Gonzalo snored! There are other examples in the article.
Suspense was also in the process of being declared dead, in 1947, as far as Roma Wines was concerned. The show was very expensive, and they felt that they could get a better ad bargain on other shows... but when the Peabody Awards were announced, they were embarrassed into two 13 week renewals.
After being on its own autopsy table in its 60-minute format, Suspense came back to life with Auto-Lite.

This is from Hedda Hopper's column. Moorehead tried to buy SWN which does not surprise me. But it also says it was performed 8 times by this date. I count 5x (counting the East and West early Roma run as twice) including the Radio Hall of Fame abridged performance, plus the Decca recording. I can't get to eight. Is Hedda making it up? There are two other times a same-day E/W performance would have been done (later times it was transcribed or pre-recorded). That can get the number there. We'll never know exactly what they were counting, I guess.

Crazy, crazy, crazy. Really, this story's plot is totally mad and completely unbelievable. However, even though the episode is utterly absurd, it is also immensely entertaining. In the story's opening scenes, the main character demonstrates herself to be so jaw-droppingly pushy and hard-headed that she blusters her way into a dead woman's job while the latter's body is still warm, laying splattered on the street below following a fatal plunge from her office window. Consequently, it is clear from the outset that the protagonist is anything but a shining paragon of virtue. Yet before long, she comes to seem like the most sympathetic character in the story,...

An east/west pair with an obvious difference. The person who recorded from the discs had to be relied on to mark the files correctly, which i am confident he did.

It appears that this particular performance of Dead Ernest was not originally scheduled for this date. The 1946 Peabody Awards were announced on April 16, and this performance seems to be here in recognition of the award for this very script.
To recap, the script was submitted for Suspense but was rejected by Spier. His (then) wife, entertainer Kay Thompson, had a habit of looking at scripts in the evenings; she convinced him to reconsider. The performance received positive reviews, and eventually, the Peabody. That award kept Roma from dropping sponsorship for another six months. How could you cancel your advertising after winning such a prestigious award? That would be embarrassing, but it all came to an end later in the year.
Whenever Wally Maher’s name appears, it’s hard not to think of how his career was cut so tragically short.

This clip has the interesting advisory at its conclusion that the episode is not for children!
That is understandable considering the possibility of nightmares and such.
Young listeners would not grasp the subtle humor that is in the show.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
SPECIAL REQUEST
I know I should have mentioned this a while ago...
I have listened to all of Suspense, and I will listen to the whole series again over these upcoming years, and probably again and again, too!
But I know a lot of you are listening now. I have a request... if you find something in the performance, such as a stumble over a line or a mispronunciation, can you post that here along with the approximate time that occurs in the performance.
Logging some of these can be used to compare other recordings we have and we may -- gasp!! -- discover some east/west recordings or other perculiarities when we put them side by side.
I just realized the importance of this in the comparison of an east/west pair that we already had identified. Usually these performances are flawless and on the same timing. So one of these identified issues is a gift to anyone who has interest in the series.
Thanks so very very much!
Next week I will be away again for a few days so I will make a multiple post on Monday Jan 22.

Newspaper references to May 8 indicate that this script was originally scheduled for that date and not May 15. As mentioned above, an encore of the award winning Dead Ernest took precedence. Some newspapers did get the change in time to better publicize Spier and CBS doing their victory lap and snubbing their nose at the Roma Wine executives.
