The background of the story can be found at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The original report of the story in the 1852-10-11 London Times has been saved as a PDF file and can be found at http://ovh.to/W2iuN4m

John Stevenson would go on to have a huge career as a voice actor in cartoons for Hanna-Barbara and others, performing well into his 80s. He was Dr. Benton Quest for the first six episodes of Jonny Quest (he was replaced because he sounded too much like the actor who had the Race Bannon role; on those episodes he also doubled and tripled with other parts; he was replaced by the legendary Don Messick who was already on the show as Jonny’s dog, Bandit!). He was Mr. Slate on the Flintstones. You can spot him most often now in popular reruns for series like Perry Mason (3 episodes), 1960s Dragnet (the off-camera “and now the results of that trial,” 33 episodes) and even Hogan’s Heroes (8 shows). (Many radio veterans appeared on HH, probably because of their experience mimicking dialects and accents).

Thank you for your continued support of my habit. Sadly, since your membership in the Cobalt Club, I have done very little to cure myself of this affliction. It may be that I take it to my grave, but I doubt it will be the cause of my death. More likely the cause of my longevity and that I attribute to your efforts, Dr Greybelt.

Note how some of the shows from this era are LQ – this is a time when we rely on more and more airchecks by collectors and AFRS recordings.

Hawaii is still getting the show, but delayed by more than a week. They were probably getting transcriptions or tapes from the mainland, probably delivered weekly via ocean freight.

Not to THIS "collector"!

But then, I'm a full-on Listener, not just a collector.

I've always considered the Welles DONOVAN to be top-tier: gripping story, good acting from Welles and cast, solid production, and enough length to breath, not rush.

It's right up there with HITCHHIKER, WRONG NUMBER, FALL RIVER, SAPHRONIA, and EDWARD G.

I'm not saying that Donovan's isn't enjoyable -- the Welles 2-parter is far superior to the 60-minute version done in 1948 -- it's that I had never seen it cited in a contemporary news or critique of the series as one of the series greatest episodes until I saw it identified as such in that clipping. I could never find a demand for it to be re-done in its era, unlike some of the others you mentioned.

It's one of my "go-to" Suspense performances because of its good old fashioned sheer entertainment, with an outlandish plot that you end up taking seriously because of the fine execution.

The 1948 one was almost done as filler, like some of the other episodes in that format, re-using a script that was already an hour in length, producers unable to sign a star performer for the event. They ended up giving the part to radio veteran John McIntyre. He does well but I find the rest of it as uninspired.

Individual collectors always have their beloved episodes (mine is Three O'Clock). Donovan's was part of a special nine months of Welles in Sept 1943 to May 1944 (Most Dangerous Game, Lost Special, Lazarus Walks, Philomel Cottage, Marvelous Barrastro, Dark Tower) where he starred in six performances beyond Donovan's.

House on Cypress Canyon is an example of episodes that seemed to be unappreciated in its day, but many collectors developed great affection for years and decades later.

Well, gb - this is what makes horse races!

Understood, about the Press. But the story, and the zeitgeist of the time...? As you say, SUSPENSE did redo it; Hollywood filmed it - twice; and Welles did his own broadcast parody of it.

Individual collectors always have their beloved episodes (mine is Three O'Clock).

I listed some of mine; there are more! (And will hopefully be even more, before I shuffle off to the next life.)

I know. Unfortunately, for me most of those fall into the solid-but-pedestrian "Early SUSPENSE" format: a little too Brit, a little too traditionally literary. (But I do like that version of DANGEROUS. And I was blest to play the lead in the FOTR recreation of Meiser's adaptation of LOST SPECIAL, where she retrofitted it into what most fans wanted it to be: a Holmes story!)

House on Cypress Canyon is an example of episodes that seemed to be unappreciated in its day, but many collectors developed great affection for years and decades later.

Again - horse races! That one, to me, is a mess: is it a murder mystery? A Ghost story? A Werewolf story? Trying to be everything, it succeeds at being not really anything. The actors do their best, but cannot sell the clumsy script.

Happy listening!

DOWNLOAD PROBLEMS WITH TODAY'S SHARE?

I had a report that there were problems with today's file. The problem is with the hubiC, the cloud storage provider. These problems are usually because of system maintenance, and will be cleared up in a few hours.

In the meantime, here is a different link to the recording on a different service.
