I tried 3 different browsers.....Opera, Firefox, & Tor and can't download from Sync. I don't know why.....I've had Sync for a couple of years & recently shared Forbidden Cargo on Multiply using it....all without any problems..........frustrating

Re: Suspense Upgrades

Post by greybelt on 4/17/2018, 7:21 am

Something I missed along the way in these posts was making note of the shift of Suspense from Hollywood to New York beginning with the episode of August 30, 1959, A Matter of Execution. While Bill Robson may say it was because of cheap executives not wanting to pay $80 a week more (I don’t remember the exact number but it was like that in an interview with him) in Hollywood compared to New York for one of the production technicians, it’s pretty clear it was a bigger issue than that. Sure, that’s $40,000 a year now, but the real issue was space. Hollywood would be for CBS television, and the NY radio studios were still there for what they needed, and they had lots of radio veterans to draw from. Most had some sort of job in the television soap operas, and there were still many TV commercials being produced in New York since that was still the HQ of the advertising industry. And of course, Broadway ensured that there were lots of experienced actors around. There were also lots of scripts. Robert Arthur was still around, and there were many scripts that originated on the Mysterious Traveler that would find their way onto Suspense, sometimes with the same titles. Many collectors dismiss the New York run. Indeed, some of the productions were sub-par. But many of them were quite good, with a cast of reliable and skilled actors and production personnel. When I met many of these people at conventions, they all knew what was happening, and they all wanted to keep Suspense going because they all loved radio drama. That affection for it led to those who lived another ten or twelve years to support CBS Radio Mystery Theater as best they could, in retirement, working for union scale, and enjoying the reunion of old friends every time.

There is a version of this episode in circulation with a clipped open but with commercials.

BIG NEWS!!

Three missing programs thought to be performed only once and lost forever turned out to be re-done!

7/8/1948 Last Chance redone as Death Sentence 11/4/48
verified by matching the show review with the Death Sentence recording
Last Chance is important because it's the first Auto-Lite show. It still would be great to find the missing recording.

11/5/51 Trials of Thomas Shaw redone as Once A Murderer 11/15/55
verified by matching the script with the show

5/24/51 Fresh Air, Sunshine, and Murder redone as Rub Down and Out 7/6/58
verified by matching the script with the show

There are probably more like this... we hope...
That brings us down to 15 one-performance missing programs.

Bill Lipton was one of the kids on Let's Pretend, and had a good career in 1940s and 1950s New York's radio, television, and theater, mainly in supporting parts. He was a regular at the early radio conventions, suffering from Parkinson's Disease, but not letting that stop him from being very active on panels and meeting the fans. He really enjoyed the attention and the adulation. You can hear him a lot on X Minus One.

Thanks to those who signed up at sync.com. Here is a new link that will add to another account [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Because of that I got When you do, I get an extra GB of space -- and you do, too! If you have not done it yet, please, if you can, do so. I'm almost at 20GB which is that max for a free account under this promotion. Once I get to 20, I have another sync.com account ready so I can share more OTR using  that, too.

Thanks again to everyone who signed up at Sync. If you haven't had the chance to get sync, here is the new link to get an extra 1GB on top of the 5GB you get for opening a free account. When you use this link, I get 1GB, too, which helps me post recordings for Cobalt, and especially those of  Suspense.
