Episode 29: Quiet Please - Berlin 1945 12-22-47

The Story

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The Script

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

and we are back to the numbering problem (see the script page):

"QUIET, PLEASE!"

Wyllis Cooper

NO. 28

"BERLIN, 1945"

WOR - Mon. Dec. 22, 1947 - 10:00-10:25 PM EST
MBS - Wed. Dec. 24, 1947 - 8:30- 8:55 PM EST
REH - Mon. Dec. 24, 1947 - 2:00- 5:00 PM EST (Studio 16)
8:00-10:00 PM EST (Studio 15)

This information looks like it came directly from the script. Also, the the log I am using lists this as episode 28.

Is this the 28th play on Mutual?

JazzMan wrote:and we are back to the numbering problem (see the script page)

I just started looking at the numbers.  A few episodes mention an episode number - and one which doesn't tally with how everyone numbers them.  Also looking at that page with the scripts it's clear that some have been copied from actual scripts (they include an episode number) while others have been made from listening to the episodes themselves and typing them out, so the ones with numbers are also helpful.

The problem seems to start when the show changes day, including two mid-week broadcasts...

10 1947.08.24 SUN Mirror mirror on the wall - script says #10
11 1947.08.31 SUN A ribbon of Lincoln green
12 1947.09.03 WED Retreat at Dunkirk
13 1947.09.07 SUN Three sides to a story - script says #12
14 1947.09.10 WED How are you, pal?
15 1947.09.15 MON The big box - script says #14
16 1947.09.22 MON Be a good dog, darling - script says #15
17 1947.09.29 MON The low road - script says #16

Some sources say that "Retreat at Dunkirk" was a rebroadcast of "A ribbon of Lincoln green" but with a different title listed in the newspaper.  If those two were the same episode that would solve it (at least up until episode 50-something.  So "Retreat at Dunkirk" would be expunged from the list or kept as a footnote and "A ribbon of Lincoln green" would be #11.

So that would solve the script numbers being one less than the accepted episode number for a while, until...

53 1948.06.07 100,100 diameters - script says #52
54 1948.06.14 Not responsible after 30 years
55 1948.06.28 Let the lilies consider - script says #55

That would appear to be a problem until we fill in that gap where the show had a week off...

53 1948.06.07 100,100 diameters - script says #52
54 1948.06.14 Not responsible after 30 years
xx 1948.06.21 TIMESLOT THIS WEEK TAKEN UP BY GOP CONVENTION
55 1948.06.28 Let the lilies consider - script says #55

So "Not responsible after 30 years" will be #53 and a script of #54 will have been prepared for June 21 before they realised there wasn't going to be a show on this date.  That script will have been used for a later week.

And moving on...

56 1948.06.05 Wahine, Tahiti
xx 1948.06.12 TIMESLOT THIS WEEK TAKEN UP BY  DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION
57 1948.06.19 As long as I live
58 1948.06.26 The man who stole a planet - script says #57

By #58 we're one episode out again, and back on track.

Then as we get to the end of the Mutual episodes...

63 1948.08.30 Motive - script says #61
64 1948.09.06 The third man's story - script says #63
65 1948.09.13 Symphony in D minor - announcement at end says "grateful for their 63 weeks of help", implying that this is #63

"#64" is listed in the script as #63 so we're still one out, so that's good.  The previous week's script is labelled as #61 though.  Perhaps because of the two conventions it's caused episodes to be saved and used a few weeks later.  Then we get to the final episode of the Mutual broadcasts.  Commonly listed as #65 but probably should be #64, the announcement says 63 but we know that the previous weeks script says #63.  Perhaps it's a simple mistake, or the announcement means 63 weeks plus this one.

If we had ALL the scripts it'd be easier to see where the numbers mess up.

So if we discard "Retreat at Dunkirk" as a retitled repeat there should be 105 episodes.

With the ABC episodes it should be less problematic as it never takes a week off, and yet at the end of "Pavanne" it says the final week is #107.  Maybe all scripts were numbered in the order they were written, but not all of them were used, so a script number might not be the same as the episode number?

Here's episode 94 (well half of it anyway). The Venetian Blind Man, very bad quality and incomplete - it was transferred at a university archive somewhere. For the completists

I think you are right - we need all of the scripts (broadcast or not) to figure this out. AND thank you for the dilligence. Can anyone help?

Thanks!  Comparing with the script, the last 2 portions are in the wrong order, with maybe about 6 minutes missing - two 3-minute portions bridging the gaps between the 3 parts.  Strange quality, I wonder if this was an amateur attempt (someone with their own disc cutter) as opposed to a proper transcription disc.

From the description - it sounds like a home recording (10" [Recordio] disc).

The final batch of raw transfers.

I added Episode 102 in case anyone needs it.  It's mp3 (96kbps mono) and is decent quality unlike the 32kbps files you'll find.  This episode wasn't among the old reel copies.  I assume it emerged more recently.

For anyone having trouble downloading, I just had a thought... maybe it limits how much you can download per day?  If it's not that, try clearing cache and/or cookies.

I've been a little busy but I finally got back to this. This is episode 80. How do I know? Its introduced as The American Broadcasting Company presents Quiet Please, but we know that Quiet Please ran on MUTUAL Till 9/13/48 Then the program was switched to ABC.

The side affect of this is (though the casts were the same for both productions according to the log), its not going to be an ABC production.

Art,

Actually, thank you. I feel a little silly for not seeing this as one of the defining features to identify all of the original vs "Repeats" (though, through editing, there may be no identifier at all - or it may be added).

Take the current episode, 32, the broadcast is identified as
"The Mutual Broadcasting System presents Quiet Please".

This should apply [I can imagine a rehearsal, ... where the identifier may not be present] to all of the plays that were first run on Mutual.

Thanks again

Yep - that and the dialog (as you pointed out earlier when you were talking about your episode comparison of In the House where I was Born).
