Hi, Space and All--

A couple questions linger as we're moving to a new format; maybe answers exist somewhere in the ether:

1. The Old Cobalt Club employed a cut-off date of 1960 for shows. Will we continue to keep that as a standard? I ask only because since so far our postings have been off-site (for me, Mediafire), is an occasional post-'60 show permissible?

2. Is the financial need still hovering? Many of us pledged to toss out some funds; have Niles and Seamus unearthed an option somewhere in the deep reaches of the Caverns?

3. Will we continue to host shows off-site, or at some point will we be returning to the one-week on-site posting of shows?

Regardless of the questions, this Grand Re-Opening is a joy to behold. (And for the record, the Whale Room will, in the weeks ahead, be hosting a marathon with your mistress of ceremonies Hey-Barbara Rebop. (Glad we found her well and willing)

Cheers,
Jeff

Answers...

1. Actually, the cut off date was 1962 and yes, we shall continue to respect that standard. Mostly, because I don't wish to keep lawyers in business by paying them to defend me, this forum server requires that we not violate copyright if we wish to keep using their services and because this site is just an extension of the old and hopefully soon to be new site.

2. Yes, I'm sure that some form financial support for the new site will be needed. I'd just received a PM from Seamus before the roof fell in. One of the subjects he covered was his pride in the way the group was responding and his excitement about the possibilities for the new site. So squirrel away a wooden nickel or two for the future if you can.

3. On this site, we'll continue to host shows off site. We're having to make do for now with no actual resources. In other words, we're on a shoestring budget minus the shoestring. Seamus had mentioned using a paid Mediafire account for the new site. But I have serious reservations about that, due to problems that members of the Pulp Scans group have been having using that service for storing and sharing public domain scans. Let's worry about that bridge when it comes time to cross it.

Meanwhile, I prefer to use Mediafire free storage for two reasons.

1. Mediafire, while far from perfect, does seem to be the equally usable by free uploaders and free downloaders.

2. If we do use a Mediafire paid service for the new site, everything we upload here should be very simple to transfer to that site. Meaning that we shouldn't have start all over at the beginning for any work that our members do here and now. I like to avoid duplication of efforts. And this seems to be the best we can do, until we have the new sites toys to play with.

I know those answers are pretty unsatisfactory, but it's the best I can do for now. Hopefully, we'll have a better perspective in a few weeks.

It all works wonderfully for me, Space. Put my shoulders to work.

Jeff,

One of the thoughts I've had for this place, since we're using free storage sites, is that we could set up a semi permanent storage site for OTR series'. We've never been able to do that in the old club due to storage limits on the server. But if enough members would volunteer to maintain a few of their favorite series' on the free sites and link them into strings here, we could leave entire series' available for the long term.

A free Mediafire account allows long term storage of up to 50 gigs of space. And all I have to do to keep the links active, is to log into my account once a month. I have two free accounts and some of my links have been active for over two years, even though they've never been downloaded. Others have been active for the same length of time and have been downloaded hundreds of times.

Ten members maintaining two accounts each equals a terabyte of free long term storage. It's just a thought but it might just work. Hundreds of the highest quality available OTR series' available for collectors to download whenever they want them. To my mind, that would be AWESOME!!!

Space--

I think that's a great approach, so count me in. I have a sustaining Mediafire account, so I can scarf up some series and host them without putting a dent in my own storage needs. Once we get this underway, I agree--this could be awesome.

Put me on the charter list.

I'm not keen on Mediafire myself owing to their recent wipeout of my account for what THEY called infringement, even though my uploads were all OTR and pre-1959. Plus they have not responded to my contesting the account deletion.

So, can anyone recommend a different, free provider? Preferably one that doesn't require others to be registered to download (like 4shared).

Thanks

David, I'm in agreement about Mediafire. There have been some similar horror stories involving them in the Pulp Scans group. The only reason I offered them as the preferred site, is because Seamus mentioned that service as the most likely candidate for storage in the new site. My thought is that it would hopefully make the migration to the new site easier.

But two of my special rules for this place are:

1) Anyone can use their preferred storage site.

2) No complaining about other members choice in storage sites. But it's acceptable to ask if someone would be willing to upload to another storage.

Folks be warned.

As of today, I've noticed that Mediafire has begun using pop-up ads with adult content on them. Not good for work.

Ick.
