The Jump Jivin' Whale Room Lives Again!

Post by ghemrats on 6/6/2016, 7:12 pm

Say hey, all you katz and kittenz. Now broadcasting live from the penthouse rooftop annex high atop the Pequod Hotel overlooking beautiful, scenic downtown Melville, welcome to the Jump Jivin' Whale Room, where zoot suits shoot the balmy breeze coming down from the Water Tower and the sweet cheeks beat their feets while the band blows hot and cool, mellow and low, whenever your mood croons with the loons for a tune to float your balloon.

Let's start out with a long distance dedication for the Ace from Space, who wants a little side order of Andrews Sisters with his potent potable tonight. And in the spirit of Little Jack Little, we quote him to say, "Here 'tis."

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

And if you'd care to tip our hostess with the mostest, Hey Barbara ReBop, she'll make sure your glass is always full.
Enjoy,
Jeff What a Face

Another Space Case

Post by ghemrats on 6/6/2016, 7:35 pm

Hey Barbara ReBop was just preparing to take her break, when lo and behold, who should come strolling in but Lauren B. Holde, on of our Club's most influential patrons, and on whose arm was she swinging? Yes, indeed it was Ole Blue Eyes himself, tagging the Andrews Sisters to sing another song for The Spaceman.

So pull up your chair and get ready for more fun.

And our Grand Reopening is just gathering steam.
Yowsah.

Re: The Jump Jivin' Whale Room Lives Again!

And since the Sisters have to leave for another limited engagement, they've cordially prepared a mass of music for us before they take their powder. Here's a veritable trove of treasures for fans of the Sisters; tonight's maitre'd Chet Boyardi even cornered their agent for some historical background on the merry medley we have here:

From the Jump Jivin' Vaults wrote:To back-track for those who are new to this material, a quick bit of history. The Glenn Miller band, fresh off of its triumphs at the Glen Island Casino and Meadowbrook ballrooms--dance meccas and live-broadcasting plums for any up-and-coming bandleader in the late 30s--was picked in the Fall of 1939 to replace Paul Whiteman's orchestra as Liggett & Myers choice to headline their Chesterfield cigarettes-sponsored radio serial. Miller had already scored several hit Bluebird/Victor singles during 1939, and was rising steadily in the popularity polls. Nevertheless, it was deemed prudent by the sponsor to team the Miller band with the hugely popular Andrews Sisters, America's leading girl-group sensation. "The Girls" had several seasons of Decca hits under their belt, and it was reasoned that the one-two punch of the Miller Band with the Andrews Sisters just couldn't miss. These broadcast recordings, made between late December, 1939, and late March, 1940, document their shared run over the CBS network. By mid-March, it was deemed that the Andrews Sisters contract would not be renewed due to personal problems in the Sisters' family which made them increasing hard to handle, as well as the obvious fact that Miller was quite able to carry the weight of the program.

The discs themselves are programmed to simulate a continuous broadcast experience, with applause and announcements tightly segued together between tunes taken from separate shows. Announcers Ed Herlihy (later of Kraft Cheese fame), and Paul Douglas (later a B-movie "heavy" in the late 40s/ early 50s) handled the speaking chores, along with Miller. The material runs the gamut, everything from Miller's recent instrumental hits of the past several months, plus outings with current pop tunes handled by band stars Ray Eberle, Marion Hutton, and Tex Beneke, as well as the most complete assemblage of Andrews Sisters performances that could be successfully drawn from the period covered. Thus, you get a pretty good snapshot of what the casual listener would have heard every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night from 10-10:15 pm on CBS. Hits like "In the Mood," "Little Brown Jug," and "Tuxedo Junction" alternate with fun novelty numbers done in the classic Andrews Sisters style, including many of their hits from their past few seasons like "Bei Mir Bist du Schoen." Included is the very rare solo performance of Patti Andrews singing "I Love You Much Too Much," occasioned by a family brawl in the Andrews' hotel suite involving their parents, Maxine's beau Lou Levy of Decca Records, and Patti's companion Vic Schoen, arranger for the Sisters and erstwhile bandleader for their records. When it came time for the broadcast that evening, only Patti made it to the radio studio.

Boy, it's so hot in here there's steam rushing from the Water Tower into the Room. One of the new girls, cocktail waitress Hey Noni Noni Anna Hotchacha, always said she suffered from the vapors, but tonight she's got reason to believe it!

Later, Gators.

i use an adblocker, so mediafire is not letting me download

if i may recommend pcloud.com -- free, clean interface, and no ads.

if you use this link i get some extra space and i think you might too. i built my account up to 20gb now after i did all of their little tasks and that might be the max without having a paid plan

Thanks Nightkey. For some reason I can't get into or use Mediafire. I go through two screens of adds then revert back to the Annex. May have to do with add/cookie blocker.

Sorry for the trouble, Boys. Evidently Mediafire is enough of a bother for a few, so I'll post new entries on another service. (Even though I have adblocker I've never had problems with MF and assumed it was okay for all.)

Hey Barbara ReBop has been after me to switch over to a keyless pad system for the Room for years; looks like it's time to follow her lead.

Standin' At The Henry Busse Stop

Post by ghemrats on 6/10/2016, 6:49 pm

Well, Katz and Kittenz, it's the weekend, so the bands are starting to fan out into the Whale Room for limited engagements.  We have to welcome a new waitress tonight too, Jacqueline Hyde, though early reviews from the staff suggest she's a mite moody and unpredictable, but we'll see how she fares.

Strolling through the studios of WBBM en route to the Whale Room is Henry Busse, who offers his own unique brand of tintillating terpsichorean trumpeteering trickery for all in attendance.  With two shows, starting with "Jada" and "Rose Room," we're in for some nice light smoothness.

And by the way, we found a pair of shoes in the chandelier last night, left there sometime last week.  Can anyone claim them? They're mighty nice boppin' kicks--Hey Barbara ReBop has them in the Lost and Found Alcove.

It's a "Chicken" Dance, Job.

Post by ghemrats on 6/10/2016, 7:04 pm

Now we've been blessed in the past with some mighty talent, but I have to say that even for us, this is something of a coup.  Mickey "Chicken" Schuckteluzengaard happened by Birdland this past week and persuaded the BUD POWELL TRIO and BILLY ECKSTINE to breeze into the Room, straight from their engagement with NBC's Stars In Jazz show.

So a doff of the hat to this "Chicken" coup, with the hope he'll bring more talent to the Room in the days ahead.

Too kewl (in celebration of my 50th post here in the Annex).
Enjoy.

Semantics Schematics

Post by ghemrats on 6/10/2016, 7:21 pm

Sylvester, our top notch particle realignment supervisor, was sprucing up our Dustbin Alley last night and unearthed this vintage reading material, which he offers now to all patrons of the Whale Room.

It's a little resource guide to help even the most straight-laced, wouldn't-swing-if-you-hanged 'em folks--an official Jump Jivin' Whale Room Encyclopedia of Languid Language and Lingo By Jingo.  Knock yourself out, Hepkatz and Kittenz. . . . with a tip of the hat to Lou Shelly (1945).

And stay tooned as the great spiritual guru Rama Llama Dingdongh is rumored to be in the area, and that kat knows how to jump, jive and wail in the Jump Jivin' Whale Room.

For Agatha Christie, Jerry Gray Sells

Post by ghemrats on 6/10/2016, 8:24 pm

To our surprise, Jerry Gray, our newest quarry, just rolled in, and while our slate was full tonight, we don't like creating a rocky atmosphere, as those are our sediments exactly.

So here are two shows, #23 and #24, in sparkling sound, our last set for the night. Say hey to your waitress Jacqueline Hyde (if she isn't robbing Louis Stevenson, as has been alleged) and sit back and relax.

Come Forth, July!

Post by ghemrats on 7/3/2016, 5:54 pm

Zip Zam Zowie and Swoosh, Katz and Kittenz! Flash you favorite fedoras, for it's time to celebrate. And over the next couple days, courtesy of our friends over at the Gordon Skene Talent Agency (with a big thank you and a free drink of choice going to Nightkey for introducing us to Gordon some time back), we've got a Jump Jivin' Whale Room Holiday Blow Out comin' your way.

That's right--a characterological cornucopia of copious commodities of a musical, jazzical nature. Grab your skyhooks, Sookie, 'cuz it's good jivin' tonight.

Let's start things out with Ben Webster and the Modern Jazz Quartet direct from an engagement in New York's Birdland! February 21, 1953. . . [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

And it's jess the beginnin', Babycakes.
Enjoy

And who should jess be strollin' up the promenade tonight, direct from a January 31, 1956 engagement on New York's east side club The Cameo but our best buddy Bobby Troup and his paramour with oh-so-much-more Julie London!

Yes, it's July, so let's harken back to 1951, July 22 to be exact, with some classic live jazz with Charlie Parker and--you gots to be kiddin--Woody Herman and his Third Herd, just to slow things down a mite.

And to close out this quick dip into the waters of jazz and jive, let's go out big--over a full hour concert from Carnegie Hall with Charlie Parker and the All Stars Of Jazz from Christmas Eve, 1949. And we'll start things off with the Bud Powell Trio.

And we're jess gettin' warmed up for the holiday, folks. Stay tuned.
