Re: Lux Upgrades

Post by greybelt on 7/14/2016, 7:23 am

Well, not really. Victory Theatre was a separate program that is technically unrelated to Lux except for the Philadelphia Story episode. A case can be made for leaving it out of Lux sets, and a case can be made for keeping it in.

There are so few circulating from this short-lived effort that it's hard to keep it in perspective. During that summer, CBS donated airtime and performers donated their participation in this series of one-time performances of various network programs. What would have been used for advertising was used for wartime information. Some of the shows were on summer break, and the casts would re-assemble for the special performance.

So Philadelphia Story is not a Lux show... but... it was the cast and crew that participated in a different series. It's the only episode that "qualifies" as Lux. I've always kept it out of my Lux set because it is a different series, but I've never really felt all that certain it was the right decision. It's probably better to keep it with the Lux set because it was CBS' intent to showcase their popular programs and casts as part of the war effort and to keep up the morale of listeners and their families in those difficult times. So Victory Theatre was not a summer replacement for Lux, but a separate and more historically important initiative.

These newspaper clips offer some insight into the short-lived series.

Does anyone have a sharp, HQ copy of the 12-26-1938 SHOW WHITE? Looking for a gift for an Aunt.

Bless you, OTRH - from the size of that file, I'm pretty sure it'd be a bit higher quality than what I already have.

BUT -

- the page won't let me download it w/o signing up?

Thanks - that did it. It will become a gift for an Aunt of mine who used to listen to Lux, and who loves Disney.

On mystery, though:

This one doesn't sound off-pitch to me, but... running over was anathema then, and most one-hour shows ran around 59m 30s. As with the file I already had, this one runs about 60m 20s.

Hmmm.

Listening now, Joe.

I consider MG a pal, and recall fondly meeting you at FOTRs.

(Chuckled at your remark about actually LISTENING to the shows being somewhat rare among some collectors. I've always found the "I've GOT 'em ALL - but I've only heard a couple..." thing screwy!)

Best,
