December 13, 1941 – News Reports of the day – NBC – Red And Blue Networks – Gordon Skene Sound Collection

December 13, 1941 – almost a week since the U.S. got involved in the War, it was now a World War. And suddenly, America was preoccupied with reports, stories, facts and figures. What were we supposed to do now? Prior to this, America took tacit interest in what was going on in Europe. Most Americans felt it was “their war” and not ours. And even though the reports were harrowing and at times grim, there was enough perceived distance, along with a certain “maybe tomorrow” attitude over our eventual involvement that it seemed far enough off not to be too concerned.

October 17, 1941 – NBC Blue Network – News Here and Abroad – Gordon Skene Sound Collection

October 17, 1941 – With war slowly becoming a real possibility, a two-ocean crisis was developing and changes in the Japanese government made war more of an eventuality than ever.

German submarines had torpedoed the U.S. Destroyer USS Kearney, southwest of Iceland (i.e. in neutral waters) and the move challenged Washington to retaliate and atmosphere around Capitol Hill was how to move most effectively. The Navy took counter-measures in the North Atlantic as a result of the attack.

October 11, 1941 – News Of The World – NBC Blue Network – Gordon Skene Sound Collection –

October 11, 1941. Word from Berlin gave breathless accounts of major German advances toward Moscow. The Russian Army was being obliterated along the Eastern Front, with Marshall Timoshenko’s Army largely wiped out, with huge losses of troops and equipment. Reports of large numbers of Russian prisoners being taken as well as capture of Russian supplies was increasing steadily along the Eastern Front. Further reports told that all Russian attempts at breaking through the German encirclements had collapsed and that the area just west of Moscow was being taken – and that Moscow was in sight, although there was no official estimate as to just how far from the Russian capitol they were, rumors from the High Command said some units were 120 miles away. Reports also said that Russian attempts at breaking out of the Leningrad area had failed and that German bombers had staged an aerial assault on Leningrad and Moscow the previous night.

United Nations Conference Report

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

June 1, 1945 – with the war over in Europe, and the war continuing in the Far East, the matter of Peace was being tackled, sooner rather than later. And even then, the road was bumpy. News for this day reported on the Middle East, in the grips of an Independence movement, feeling long-simmering resentments and frustrations, getting ready to explode in yet another series of conflicts.

Post by CompleteDayMan on 12/16/2019, 11:21 am

One of my main objectives in collecting OTR is to find at least one major network news broadcast for each day in World War 2 as well as complete coverage for certain key days during the process. Hence my moniker CDM.

I'm currently looking for better quality recordings for the early morning 0000 - 0800 hrs time frames of Dec 8 and 9, 1941. As an example, here is one of the files I currently have for Dec 8.

1941-12-08 NBCR 0300 - 0330 Henry Busse And His Orchestra

Can anyone help me with upgrading this file or any others from this time frame?

Thanks very much. I am really trying to pick up better sounding versions of the overnight programs for the Dec 8 and 9. I have copies of all the available files for NBCR and B but they are all in poor sound. The first file that Pierre posted above has a lot of the news flashes and small snippets of some of the shows in great sound. That tells me that the shows are available somewhere - finding them is the problem.

Elmer Davis began giving weekly summaries of the week's war news on Fridays at 10:45 ET beginning March 12, 1943. These broadcasts were carried by most stations, regardless of network affiliation. I've got 11 of these broadcasts.

Elmer Davis and His Weekly War Review. March 12, 1943. Program #1. O.W.I. origination. Sustaining. The director of the O.W.I. gives a weekly progress report on the war. The program originates from Washington, D.C. The Germans have counter-attacked against the Russian in the Ukraine. The German government is drafting men and women into the military. The weather in Tunisia may affect the fighting against General Rommel. There have been few developments in the Pacific. Elmer Davis. 14:19.
