I'm looking for any kind of log of the series. I've reviewed OTRSite and Goldin's Index and there is so much unknown. Specifically, I'm looking for an exact or approximate date for SSD #2. This version contains a fair bit of comedy by Olsen and Johnson and had guest vocalist Phil Brito. My guess is sometime prior to November 1943, but that is the best I can do at the moment.

Any thoughts>

I haven't been on here for quite a while but it doesn't look like you ever received an answer to this one.
From my ongoing notes on this series I have SSD 1 as September 26 1943 and SSD 2 as October 3 1943.

This is a show I've been meaning to research and document for years. Might there be any interest in doing a run on this one like we did with Fitch Bandwagon? I need three or more 'yes' votes to continue.

Alrighty then. Let's kick off this thread with a quick summary of the startup for this program.

Before this  program took to the air, NBC portrayed it as follows: "The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street, combines a serious approach to jazz with a humorous but authoritative view of classical music programs, While the program spoofs and satirizes the long-haired musicians, albeit good-naturedly, most of the cast members have serious musical backgrounds".

The New York Symphony Orchestra had been on the air for some time and, especially under the guidance of Arturo Toscanini, had become a staple of high brow entertainment. The Chamber Music Society was meant to spoof this type of broadcast using Basin Street style jazz as its medium, or, as the announcer would have it, combining the three Bs, Barrel House, Boogie Woogie and the Blues. The music was first rate, featuring the orchestras of Paul Lavalle (woodwinds) and Henry Lavine (Dixieland octet) and starring jazz greats and 'authorities' each week. One of the announcers that introduced the NBC Symphony programs, Gene Hamilton, was the initial m/c on this program. 'Dr. Gino' described each number as if it were a classical piece and addressed each of the musicians in a highly tongue-in-cheek titled manner. Even the symphony interval was spoofed, usually, but not always with a jazz 'expert' in much the same manner as the high brow programs. Vocals on the earlier shows were performed primarily by Dinah Shore. Dinah was followed by Dixie Mason and then Dolores O'Neil.

Since no sponsor had been obtained, the program started out sustained on NBC's Blue Network on Sunday February 11 at 4:30 p.m. newspaper coverage was minimal, to say the least.

I'll post two shows today to kick this off and then one a day after that. I'm documenting this show as we go along and want to stay slightly ahead of daily progress. There is not a lot of newspaper coverage for the show and finding what exists is time consuming. As per usual, please post upgrades and fills if you have them as we go along. For ease of posting, I've shortened the name to CMSOLBS. The sequence numbers are mine - I don't have any of the scripts and so this number is based simply on whether there seemed to be an actual show on the scheduled date.

The first show I have is:

Apparently W.C. Handy was really impressed with Dinah Shore's singing of Memphis Blues on June 16.

This next bit is pretty interesting. The show was to become a regular candidate for time changes and pre-emption for other stuff but it is at this point that it actually plays on two consecutive days. It ended the string of Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. on August 18, a show which I don't have, and then aired again the following night at 9 p.m.
That show I have, plus a verification paper clip and a clip about the two nights in a row.

I'm trying to find a way of making the previous image bigger so it can be read. In the meantime today's show follows;

This one is a bit of a puzzle. The NBC program notes show Jack Teagarden is the guest and this program features Jack. Dave Goldin lists this one and shows it as starting at 9:35 following the news update. However I can find no reference to it in the listings and the show may or may not have aired in all markets. The program length is just 25 mins so the switch to the 9:35 time frame looks likely. The NY Times shows Senator Vandenberg speaking at 9p.m. and a Hollywood music show following the news at 9:30. I know for a fact that there was no show on October 28 or Nov 4 and that when the program returned on Nov 11 the time had indeed changed to 9:35 p.m. on Mondays, following the news update.
