Gunsmoke Empty Gunsmoke

Post by greybelt 10/17/2018, 2:25 pm

Back in December 1969, young collector Chris Lambesis interviewed William Conrad. Both of them have since passed away. We are lucky to have this recording. I first heard it about sometime in 1976 or the beginning of 1977 and found it fascinating. The interview was in a batch of reels that I am transferring to digital format for a friend... the same friend who sent me the interview way back then. I was glad to see it again. As a new collector, I had never really heard about Gunsmoke or Escape. I was into the shows that were being rebroadcast by syndication, such as the Shadow, Fibber McGee, Green Hornet, Lone Ranger, and others.

Over the years I have heard that Conrad always declined these kinds of interviews, and was generally not interested in looking back. At the time of the interview Conrad was very busy as guest star in many TV westerns and dramas, and of course as narrator and other voices, as he always did. His gig with the Cannon series would not begin until just about two years later. He may have agreed to do the interview because Chris was so enthusiastic about radio and Conrad's career.

Enjoy!

I loved hearing Mr. Conrad described his experiences and the cast interactions on Gunsmoke. His comments about his fellow actors and this sit down with Chris says a lot about him as a person. A real pleasure to hear. Thanks for sharing this interview.

Ditto from me too. When I was a kid, for whatever reason, his show "Cannon" resonated with me and I couldn't wait for next weeks show.

My passion has always been listening to interviews from stars of yesterday (not the PR fluff pieces). One of my favorite hobbies is searching for interviews of silent screen stars.

Thank you very much for this. It is very much appreciated. - Tom
