There's no episode list available for the Australian episodes of The Witch's Tale, so I thought I'd research one myself.  Taking a leaf from DigitalDeli's book I realised the best way to do this was through old newspaper listings, in this case Trove.

Firstly the audition episode, "Devil Hands", which is one of the available episodes.

The first reference to the Witchs Tale in Trove is in an article "An Australian Girl Abroad".  The article appears in a number of newspapers, the first appearance being in "Narromine News and Trangie Advocate" on 1939.04.28.  In the article the girl talks about meeting an old German woman in a small village and compares her to Witch Nancy.
"I came across one of the main characters in 'The Witches Tale'- gosh, she was the wickedest looking creature I've ever seen. The witch in 'Snow White' was a raving beauty compared to her."

Image from "Lachlander and Condobolin and Western Districts Recorder", 1939.05.01.  Same article as the one 3 days earlier but this one is a better scan and more legible.

Jumping forwards a bit, the first series has been going for about 2 weeks when an article appears in "The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate" (love those newspaper names!) which tells us that the show is a recent addition to station 2GB's Saturday nights, and that recently the station played a number of new shows in a show called "On Trial Tonight" and asked viewers for their opinions, with an overwhelming demand to hear more of The Witchs Tale.

Looking for "On Trial Tonight" I can find it on 3 dates, 1939.03.21, 1939.03.28, 1939.04.04.  It's a 15 minute show starting at 9:15pm.  The length of the show causes a problem, but maybe they broadcast it in two halves.  Anyway, we can tentatively give a date of March 1939 for the audition show.

An ad heralding the start of Season 1. The Sun, Friday, 1940.12.20.
Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list NAAnMdz

Series one starts on 2GB on Saturday 1940.12.21 at 7:45pm, weekly. The day after episode 14 airs, the show also begins airing on channels 4BC, 4SB, 4GR. There's no way of knowing if they started from the beginning or if they're repeating the previous days episode as heard on 2GB. From episode 15 on 1941.03.29 the start time on 2GB moves to 8:30pm.

Season 1 (Saturday at 7:45pm on 2GB)

1940.12.21 (01)
1940.12.28 (02)
1941.01.04 (03)

1941.03.01 (11)
1941.03.08 (12)
1941.03.15 (13)

(start time moves to 8:30pm. From Sunday 1941.03.23 4BC, 4SB, 4GR start broadcasting the show.)

1941.03.22 (14)
1941.03.29 (15)
1941.04.05 (16)
1941.04.12 (17)

1941.05.31 (24)
1941.06.07 (25)
1941.06.14 (26)

So we have season 1, 26 episodes, 1940.12.21-1941.06.21. So far so good, but no episode titles were given. I'll get to that.

On 1941.10.08 "The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate" tells us 2GB are presenting a new series on Saturday nights.  Episode 1 of the new series (episode 27) started four days earlier on 1941.10.04 at 8:30pm on 2GB, and at 8:15 on 3UZ.  3GB only broadcasts 23 episodes while 3UZ continues for a further 3 weeks and broadcasts all 26.  2GB broadcasts the 3 it missed on May 29, June 5, June 12.

Towards the end of the season some episode titles are mentioned, I've filled those in.

Two different archive listings say Rappaccini's Daughter is #51 and Guardian Of The Tomb is #52. (some uncirculated episodes listed in Nightkey's OTR Errors, as well as the list mentioned by dbf in the "Some Australian Shows" thread.)

When 2GB reached it's 49th week, perhaps, realising they weren't going to broadcast the final 3 episodes in this run, they maybe decided to end with Rappacini's Daughter for whatever reason.  Perhaps it was a better episode to end on.  I've speculated that 3UZ broadcast the remaining 3 in that logical order, whereas when 2GB broadcasts the three they missed they give two of the titles so they have to go in that order.  At this point it's just a best guess.

Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list Empty Re: Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list

Post by Egg_Crisis 1/22/2019, 3:37 pm

Once both seasons have been aired it's a free-for-all, with a whole bunch of Australian stations broadcasting them on various days and timeslots, and going by the rare occasion an episode title gets mentioned they seem to be broadcasting them in random orders making things difficult to work out the 'proper' order.

In June 1947 station 5KA starts airing them in what appears to be the proper order, and newspaper "The Advertiser" gives all the episode titles except the first one.  In Oct 1947 station 2HD also starts airing them in what looks like the proper order, the "Newcastle Sun" gives a small number of episode titles, but what little they do give fits alongside the list of 5Ka airings.

Now I'll list the airdates for both those two runs alongside each other, with the assumed episode number and also if that number conforms with the episode numbers we already have from other sources.

The Advertiser, 1947.06.07.
Subsequent weeks had a smaller listing giving the episode title. The first episode had a larger listing that unfortunately didn't include the episode title.

1947.12.27 (30) All Hallow's Eve / 1948.05.06
(The Advertiser stops listing 5KA)
(2HD listings in The Newcastle Sun continue for 3 more episodes, after which the run continues but no more titles are given)
1948.05.13 (31) Fallon's Folly
1948.05.20 (32) The Priest Of Sekhet
1948.05.27 (33) The Tiger

At this point no more titles are given.

The 5KA lisitings list The Suicide twice. 1947.10.04 & 1947.10.18.  Perhaps the first airing was pre-empted and rebroadcast two weeks later. That'd mean 5KA missed The Troth of Death.  Perhaps they broadcast Troth Of Death by mistake on 1947.10.04.

Now to see if other sources can help to confirm those episode numbers...

Among the circulating files,

(02) Four Fingers and A Thumb
(19) The Knife of Sacrifice
(20) The Troth of Death
(23) The Physician of the Dead
(24) The Devil Mask
(27) Tourists Accommodated
(28) The Power of Lucifer
(32) The Priest of Sekhet

The list of archive holdings mentioned in the "Some Australian Shows" thread has...

(11) The Devils Number
(12) The Puzzle
(29) The Bed
(30) All Hallow's Eve
(31) Fallon's Folly
(33) The Mannequin
(39) The Deserter
(40) The King Shark God

All those conform to the list I've so far compiled (except The Mannequin), showing that they were being broadcast in the proper order.

One problem...  the circulating file of The Mannequin is sometimes listed as #33 and I have The Tiger in that position.  That list of archive holdings has The Tiger as #34.  Ok then, put The Tiger at 34 leaving 33 free for The Mannequin.  That means we have a list of the first 34 episodes.  We can fill out much of the remaining 18 episodes with the titles mentioned in a couple of archive holdings.

These four belong in four of those 5 gaps in Season 2...

The Lorelei (Goldin has this one)
4 Ten-Rouble Pieces (Goldin has this one) (also, see scan further down the page)
The Witness (Goldin has this one)
The Shooting Gallery (Goldin has this one)

One of many repeat airings the series got, The Age, 1950.11.24.
Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list WhudZVk

The earlier listings only took us up to episode 33/34.  For the rest, two of the available files circulate with numbers... (39) The Deserter & (40) The King Shark God.

Nightkey's OTR Errors page gives us numbers for a bunch of uncirculating Season 2 episodes - 37, 38, 41, 42, 45, 46, 47, 48, 51, 52.  I assume those are in another inaccessible archive, if not, I'd love to hear them!

OTR Errors lists The Violin as #1.  I've not seen that anywhere else but I'll assume it's an error!

The list in the other thread also lists 37, 38, 41, 42, 51, 52 which tallies with what we have here.

The Newcastle Sun, 1947.10.30

So we have a near-complete list.  Just one blank in s1 and 5 blanks in s2, although we have two titles, we just don't know where they go.  So there we are.  Complete transparency as DigitaDeli says.  If anyone finds anything in Trove that I've missed, or is able to fill any blanks, then go ahead.  And if any blanks can be filled with actual audio that's even better!

I'm wondering if s1e1 was a repeat of the audition episode?  If it was good enough to make Australians demand a full series than it's good enough to be broadcast again!

Incidentally, the show was still being broadcast as late as 1955, the last listing being 1955.02.27.

One thing I'd hoped to find was a mention of the cast members names, but they're never mentioned.

I'm a bit confused with "The Devil's Hands".....at the end, it mentions that next week's episode is called "The Snake"....was that just a random thing for the audtition, do you think?  And this episode/story never actually broadcast in Australia? And the announcer calls it episode 325? They just used that from the original script I guess?

Yeah I wondered that myself. It was episode 325 of the US version and presumably the episode number was mentioned in the script. None of the other episodes (US or Aus) mention episode numbers within the episode so it was perhaps done for the Audition episode as a way of letting the listener know that it was a popular show with a lot of episodes under its' belt. The Snake was #327 though, not #326 so I don't know what's happening there. Maybe it was going to be #326 but was moved to #327 and perhaps they were using an earlier copy of the script that still had The Snake down as being the next episode.

As for being broadcast in Australia, we know an episode was broadcast because the newspaper articles refer to an episode being auditioned in a show called "On Trial Tonight", but to confuse matters further the listings tell us it was a 15-minute show. It's possible it was split over two shows, or maybe the listeners got an edited 15 minute version. It's a shame the newspapers don't give any more details.

It is possible that The "Entomologist" may be the missing episode 1, because it could be in 15 minute segements.

You mention that 1941-05-03 (20) The Troth of Death ;  1941-10-04 (27) Tourist Accommodation; 1941-10-11 (28) The Power Of Lucifer; and 1941-11-08 (32) The Priest Of Sekhet are all listed among the circulating files. Unfortunately, I haven't had the luck to find them.

This is my list of episodes that I have in my collection... (thanks to your efforts)

Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list Empty Re: Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list

The recording of The Entomologist that people have is the US version not the Australian version.  If I was to guess at a date I'd think the 1935 date would be more likely, but without seeing the script (where there'd perhaps be slight variations between versions) there's no way of knowing for sure.

The Witness & The Shooting Gallery.  I've never heard of these. If they're Australian versions they'll have to fit in one of the gaps in the episode list.  I don't know how we'd go about getting them?

As for the ones you're missing, dbf posted a load of episodes in this thread. And see subsequent posts as I posted a few upgrades to those.

Researching an Australian Witch's Tale episode list Empty Witch's Tale "All Hallow's Eve" 1941

Post by JeffStew11 2/20/2020, 12:44 pm

Thanks for the research into the Australian Series.  I actually prefer these to the American ones as they are in much better sound and the acting is also far better.  I was curious if the episode "All Hallow's Eve" is available anywhere?  Thank you.

Grace Gibson has just released WT episodes - most of which are un-circulating and a few of which are not even on the list ! Recommend purchasing to encourage a volume 2 :-). This brings the "missing" Australian episodes down substantially .....
