That's excellent news greybelt. And thanks for sharin'. Continued prayers and positive vibes will be comin' your way, in hopes of continued good results.

As my last couple of check in's have shown, food adventures are a part of my world. Just this mornin' I taught my sister-in-law to make breakfast quesadillas. She was amazed at how easy and adaptable they are. Next, I get to show her why I keep four different kinds of rice on hand. But beans on toast? Nope haven't tried it, but it just went on the list. Any variations I should consider?

My weekend plans are mostly doin' research for a drone purchase I have planned. Not goin' high end on this one. But I want one before the wife and I go on our next scheduled adventures. And I wanna have time to learn to use it before we travel. Right now the Mavic Mini is the front runner. But there are other models which might give me more flexibility, so research is definitely needed. I wish we'd planned two weeks for the Vegas trip, instead of just one. I'd really like to get a day in Monument Valley. But I just don't think there will be enough time. 200 miles one way would be a long stretch by car.

Hello, Friday... Mrs Greybelt is coming along, though stamina through the day is a problem. Having one good eye and one really blurry one seems to be very tiring. It could be some anesthesia still working through the system. I remember when I got over mine 30+ years ago after multi-hour ear surgery -- you feel great and then it's like you hit a wall and get tired all at once. But the weather here in NC has been nice and we've worked our way up to a 40-minute walk already. Our big excursion will be going to Sunday Mass for the evening one which is much less crowded. It will be the first time she'll be in a car since the trip to the doctor's appointment last week, and the first time among people other than a brief supermarket visit.

It's been odd being housebound but I've found a routine of karate practice that's working since I've missed classes. I start again on Wednesday. It will be good to practice with others again.

And glad to be back into the Casey project again. Now 2/3 of the way through transferring 100 cassettes of Suspense from nickp57 and will start going through them next week. Not expecting much but already found a more intact copy of one of the 1960s programs. It is amazing what you can find in some of these older collections that were pre-digital.

Good to hear about the improvements Greybelt. It can be a long process and yes, the anesthesia can take some time to leave the system. She remains in our daily prayers.

This week started off in a flurry and has since tapered off to my preferred slow pace. We've had cold (for here) weather and high winds. So much so that parts of the roof around the chimney have started to pull away and bits of shingle are on the ground. I am awaiting a roofer to tell me how much it is to fix. Sad

I've been transferring ETs all week - a heads down process that requires actually listening to stuff and making sure there are no skips etc.

Seamus, I know it's only been a day but it's not looking good on the Chamber Music Society. I'm going to plod ahead with the research anyway and if no one else is interested I'll send you a link to the shows when I'm finished. I don't know what's with the current group of members, there don't seem to be very many interested in the music shows.

CDM I know for sure Jeff would be a yes and Space and bicho might I remember he  liked it before. I would say others have not seen the thread. Most of our members never wander much past the swap forum.

greybelt good news on Mrs. greybelt. Slow but steady and I had eye surgery 10 years ago the effort to stereo focus your eyes is like a huge workout and I remember getting headaches and being as tired as running up a hill.

Its a warm and lightly misting day here just came back from a walk with the doggo before it unleashed. Our timing was perfect. Another grand week on my own schedule. Stress level low, health level high. Zen level high. I am grateful I can call my own shots now. I am working hard but at my own pace on things that interest me. I turned down a gig this week as the work sounded unappealing. I was sorry this does not interest me. Said nicely. But I just will not work on anything anymore that is not fun or doing good or helping someone or the planet. Lots of high paying gigs working with assholes pardon my french. Just not hooking my talent to such nonsense. My whole theory of work and what is required to live a life has changed so much. I wish experience was bottled because I sure would have liked the perspective I have now 20 years ago.

But like my fave pal Doris said Que Sera Sera....

Happy weekend everyone I love reading everyones check in's.

Greybelt, it's great to hear the missus is on the mend. Positive vibes will continue to flow your way.

CDM, you can add me as a heartfelt YES. Jazz and Blues, in addition to bein' treasures in themselves, are the foundation of most of the original music in my life. And for some reason, these thoughts have made me wanna binge on Aretha Franklin this weekend. And binge I shall.

Mrs. Space Cadet has a mile long Honey Do list she expects me to complete this weekend. And I'll probably actually get around to two or three things on that list. My own plans include learnin' to fly a drone at high rates of speed and watchin' 60's and 70's cartoons. Does anyone else remember Rod Rocket?

Not only do I remember Rod Rocket, but I also recall Roger Ramjet and Clutch Cargo (of the frightening Syncrovox fame. I still get the willies watching this).
and

This weekend we'll get rid of most of the remaining boxes and with luck assemble a lovely living space again in the basement.  I also need to finish logging in and updating the comic collection before the painful and tedious task of amassing bills and records for the Happy April Festival of Taxes ("Let me tell you how it will be--there's one for you, nineteen for me. . .")

Luckily the temperatures are falling faster than a hooker's holsters so staying indoors with a full refrigerator will ease the tasks. Mrs. Ghemrats and I will also try to plug in *JoJo Rabbit* on disc on Saturday night, and possibly follow it up with *Knives Out*, neither of which we've seen but have been goaded into seeing by our sons.

Prayers of support continue to wing their way to ya'll with special mission prayers going out to the Greybelts and Space's Kickstarter campaign to buy a double decker bus and drive over to Seamus's abode from the States (I don't have the heart to tell him such buses don't navigate long stretches of water well).

By all means, let's have some Chamber Music! Laissez le bon temps rouler, as they say in Italy.

SyncroVox is CREEPY! It think they relied on TVs being blurry at that time.

I do have a Space Angel DVD -- they didn't use that process for that series thank goodness!

Another Friday another checkin. Life is chill all good. Weather was beautiful on the beach today. Doggo and I had grand time we sat down on the beach and dang did I not look up and over an hour had flown by while Blue and I were being zen. Dogs are great meditation partners they are way more zen then us.

Good week of work and music and Tv shows. Anyone catch the first 2 episodes of Devs? thriller about secretive tech company developing quantum computing. Now some of the weird shit they talk about we saw hints of that in our work with Quantum Computers. Weird freaky entanglements and time differencing. These computers open the pandoras box to how weird and spooky perception and reality really is. Some of the people I work with in the field regard the weirdness like a religion they get a bit lost inside it all. I saw the show and went ah okay they have amplified out the spooky causality and determinism that breaks down at Quantum level. I enjoyed that show from my own unique perspective of having worked with this tech and I continue to work with it.

More vinyl came through the door. Lots of funk as I in the mood for keeping it funky and bass driven right now. Kind of music that makes you move even if you don't want to.

Whats everyone else doing? better be some Indiana Jones like quests going on I will settle for nothing less in Y'alls updates.

Beach today. Sun was just right and water was lovely blue....

That looks absolutely fabulous Seamus. As a late teenager and a young 20-ish I spent many an hour walking over Bray Head and surrounds with my older cousin. I do believe we walked to Greystones as well but memory has faded along with other stuff that has fallen off. It really is grey stones, or pebbles, isn't it?

Speaking of dogs, Mrs CDM and I are hoping to adopt a Golden next week. Keep your fingers crossed that is going to happen. I feel lost without a dog to walk with these days.

And, just for grins, the latest pic of granddog Blue with her pal Cat the Rottweiler in double dog begging position.

Friday... Friday... Friday... Oh how I've missed Ya.

No adventures for me this weekend. The family is waitin' for the arrival of a Grand Niece. Unfortunately, it could happen any time in the next few weeks. And for some reason, Unka Space Cadet is really important and HAS to be there.

It looks like the high point of my weekend, will be goin' up to the hole in the wall chicken shack for a pound of fried chicken livers. It's a southern addiction and it's been a long time. I need my greasy, salty, irony fix.

I'm in the same boat as Space, so I guess we're both a little dinghy.

Just basking in the hideous joy of collecting documents for the IRS, and unwrapping the last of the boxes in the basement. Two hundred thirty-three boxes can be quite the task, I'm discovering, cowering in guilt over what our sons will have to do when we two are gone. Hopefully that will not happen for another couple decades of accumulation. . . .

Movies, snow, what more could a man ask for?

But I've penciled in a bottle of Tylenol for Sunday afternoon. I wonder if I can deduct those?

Between my wife and me, I think we own a good share of the Tylenol and Advil markets. I would rather change a spare tire in the snow than accumulate tax info. But no one will give me that choice.

The primary reason for my procrastination, is that for the past three years I've had to file addendums, due to an additional form arrivin' in the mail after I'd filed. But, I'll be explorin' the extent of my knowledge of profanity on Sunday afternoon.

Friday Check In - Page 12 Empty Re: Friday Check In

Post by greybelt on 3/7/2020, 7:29 am

Mrs. Greybelt is coming along slowly after great strides last week. She finally got the go-ahead that it's okay to tilt her head back and she can sleep on her back if she wants to. There's still frustration over the vision as it all heals.

One thing that made her feel better is finally tackling the family photos project. We've been keeping albums of various events and trips of our years and now it's time to start disposing of things in preparation for what may be another downsizing move. We got a document scanner, the same basic one we bought 10 years ago for a similar task, and boy have the changes been incredible. It's zipping through the photos at an alarmingly fast rate. It will take more time to name the files and back them up on external drives and cloud services han it does to scan them. The quality has been excellent once we figured out the settings. It's a Fujitsu X1500. So that will keep her busy.

The homeboundedness is getting to us -- I did finally get to karate class this week and next week it will be the regular classes and I get to teach those kids again. I did practice at home during all this and it showed that I was not rusty -- but it feels good to see everyone again because group practice is one of the better reasons to even be interested in martial arts.

I'm more than halfway through Casey now. I did some sound processing of files from nickp57's Suspense cassettes and they did turn out well. Anxious to start posting Suspense again and getting this year's book done.

Our weather starts to turn nice this week, so more things from the grill at dinner time, and with daylight savings time this weekend, the after-dinner walks (around our development's very nice fake pond) will lift our spirits.

Glad to hear that the Mrs is coming along, but I'm sure she is looking forward to getting back to the normal routines.

That's a great project with the photos. We have been doing that for a few years now and I sort them by year.  For any trips we take, I do label them and number them in sequence of when they were taken.

I change screen savers every so often and pick a different trip as a new screen saver.

It brings back lots of memories.

Best regards

Friday has rolled around again and following two days in the high 80s, north Texas is now cool and rainy, yet again, and they wonder why almost everyone suffers from allergies. It's strange in that when we lived in Toronto, I was the allergy sufferer and the rest of the family was fine. When we moved to Texas the whole situation was reversed. Go figure.

I'm now going to have to come up with a whole new set of interests during the tenure of covid-19. I'm not a basketball follower but everything else, including real football and my beloved cricket has been either postponed or canceled. I had a whole slew of games to watch this weekend, starting this morning, but they now all gone! What will I do? Suggestions (clean) anyone? Cool Cool Cool

We're housebound-ish in a different way now with this virus around. Just when the Mrs is more confident about getting around. I do have a black belt class tomorrow morning and I am looking forward to that. But this is disappointing... we'll be without baseball for a while. I'm trying to help others as much as I can. This is a note I sent to some of my fellow Mets fans... obviously the below is my opinion about the various movies mentioned...

BUT THE PRESIDENT SAYS WE SHOULD HAVE BASEBALL!
Friday Check In - Page 12 Fdr_ba10

Sent to the Commissioner, 6 weeks after Pearl Harbor
The fourth paragraph is funny in relation to the time of games and the cost.
The comment about 300 teams I believe means all of the minor league and professional (in the sense being paid players). There are much fewer now, but there were very many in the 1940s.

Many older players hung on in the war years and there were some curious ones, especially Pete Gray, the one-armed outfielder who played for the St Louis Browns in 1945
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Gray
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Winner_Never_Quits
The TV movie about him is online (a transfer from a VHS tape) -- it has never been released on DVD https://vimeo.com/249914105
It's got a great cast including Keith Carradine and Dennis Weaver.

For our baseball fixes in these weeks of forced exile,

DO NOT watch "The Babe Ruth Story" with William Bendix or "The Babe" with John Goodman

Of course, the greatest baseball movie of all times is "Pride of the Yankees" which can be streamed for a fee from multiple sources.

Seek out "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" -- it's no longer online on any service but it is available on DVD. It's a marvelous biographical film about the overlooked superstar

If you have Netflix, find "The Battered Bastards of Baseball" about the single-A Portland Aeros that signed numerous ex-MLB players, including Jim Bouton and Mets fans may remember Dick Rusteck who pitched one incredible game for them and ruined his arm and was never really heard from again, as well as minor leaguers who never made it but wanted one last chance to play baseball. The movie gets a little long, but it has some great moments as MLB owners were so ticked off with the team's success they were sending their best AAA prospects down to A ball before series with the Portland team to try to beat them down.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battered_Bastards_of_Baseball

61* -- Billy Crystal's HBO documentary about Roger Maris is nearly excellent if you can find it.

Cobb with Tommy Lee Jones should have won him an Oscar. Cobb was mean, but not as mean as in the movie, but it's excellent movie making.

Eight Men Out, about the Black Sox Scandal is excellent with a great cast

Fear Strikes Out is not particularly well made, but is about mental illness experienced by Jimmy Pearsall, and is a good movie in its time.

The Rookie with Dennis Quaid is a good but one of those heartwarming movie about the comeback of pitcher Jim Morris that if you're in the mood for it, it's a good watch

Moneyball is a good movie, even if just to see the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his better roles (if you want to see one of his incredible performances, get Capote, where he plays Truman Capote... who did not play baseball, of course). Hoffman plays Art Howe, who ended up managing the Mets a few years later. Howe is not treated well in this movie. Is this Brad Pitt's only good role ever? This is the movie about how analytics was ushered into baseball with the Oakland A's.

And then there's Ken Burns' Baseball series which is always around somewhere.

League of their Own is fun, Bull Durham is way way overrated, The Natural gets annoying, Major League only has funny characters but is an awful movie, Field of Dreams is worth watching just to be reminded of all the cultural references that still linger years later, but it's not really that good a movie. For Love of the Game is a romance, not a baseball story

I'm on an unexpected paid vacation for the next two weeks. All three of my kids want the wife and me to fly out for a visit. That would be to Texas, Las Vegas or Hawaii, dependin' on how far west we wanted to travel. But she has a damaged immune system and I dare not put her on a plane, what with all of the health risk right now. So it looks like I'll get a bit of catch up readin' done.

Be well everyone.

Ireland is on lock down so I am doing what I am usually doing chilling at home. So everyone be safe out there. Eat your fruit and veg, clean your hands.

Everybody keep checking in so we know you are all okay.

The show Devs is as spooky as shit. Watch that.

Got lots of vinyl and books to get through, radio shows and plenty of work. I am trying to convince the family that fruit cake and ginger beer is a virus treatment. That and beans on toast.

You can live on beans on toast and I did during my Uni days. Used to get these loafs called "Texas Toast" they were big thick slices of brown bread that toasted up a treat. Heavy buttered then a slice of cheese on each slice of bread then beans on. Leave the beans a few mins to melt the cheese, then eat. Heavenly and can cure anything that ails you.

Isn't it Friday?

With everyone going underground it's pretty quiet up here in the air (what little of it I can attain through my Buzz Corey helmet). But it's all good--time to catch up with the new season of *Better Call Saul* and the lingering TV episodes of *Space Patrol* I haven't catalogued yet. Our dog is going crazy with all the attention he seeks, but that's par for the course.

Waiting for the vinyl soundtrack of *Top Secret* with original songs sung by Val Kilmer, and a few new old movies coming 'round for review. The basement is nearly done, with big trash pick-up on Monday, so all the boxes will be vacated. Thank the Lord and pass the ammunition.

Just finished my second-in-a-row Stephen King novel, this one *The Institute* surely to become a movie in some form soon. I can cut through his prose like a laser through butter.
Continued good health and happiness to all.
Jeff
