My copy of 42/06/29 The Case Of The Gestapo Murder is yet one erroneous title for Death under the Big Top 7-7-48.

Yes, I've found a number of the 1948 shows pretending to be different 1942 programs. Very annoying.

Show titles for the 1943 are listed below.

Main comments are as follows:

1. The number of time changes for the show in different location during the year leads me to believe that local stations were transcribing the original network feed off the air directly from WOR and then playing it back, with or without local sponsorship, on a different day. I don't know how else they would have handled it then sinve surely there wouldn't have been an east / west broadcast of the same show live on multiple days. Does that make sense? Even though company policy was that it shouldn't be done, I know that KIRO in Seattle started doing this for CBS network news programs back in 1939 - that is the only way we have most of those recordings today. I have found evidence of BD programs showing up on every day of the week in different locations. I haven't listed them all below but New York and LA changed multiple times and I need to go back and pick up all the relevant info.

2. Because of point 1 above, I have changed all date references for the programs to the date WOR broadcast the show and not the date it aired locally.

3. The 43-01-25 program may have been pre-empted as the same title also appears for the following week.

4. It appears that Alan Hewitt took over as Drummond at the start of the year and that he in turn was replaced by Ned Wever just a few weeks later when Wever joined the Army.

5. David Goldin states he has two shows from this year. The first one is 43-07-12 The Subway Murder Case. He also states it is ZIV syndication, which didn't take place until 1948.
The program title is correct for the 43-07-11 broadcast in NY (the next day in Chicago) but the ZIV bit isn't. I'm assuming that this is a rebroadcast at some point in 1948.

6. DG also states he has the 43-09-20 program, for which he provides a description but no title. He also states the the program is 29:12 long and is sponsored by Horton's Ice Cream. I have found no reference to the title 'Axis Submarine' or anything similar. In fact the only title I've found for this date is that the Boston Globe and Quad City Times list it 'Fatal Trick'. I haven't been able to find a copy of DG's file yet, which would help a lot since if it is 29+ mins long then a description of next week's show and/or a title would have been present. Jerry H shows he has the program but gives the length as 24 mins+. The longest copy of the program I've received so far is just over 24 mins, which sounds to me like they are originally sourced from Jerry.

Please post any comments or suggestions. I'll start on 1944 in a few days time.

For what it's worth, here is the only file I have from 1943. I'm still not convinced that it is accurate.

I really hate contradicting Goldin......mostly because it often turns out that I'm the one who made the mistake.

I believe his 43-07-12 The Subway Murder Case is really 48-07-14 The Deadly Stand In. In the files I have, the stories are the same. At the closing, the next episode is announced as "The Album Of Death" which is the 48-07-21 program (Note that The Album of Death was also done in 1946 but the preceding show title doesn't seem to match up with the story we have)

I think you are right - that was my thought as well. It was the mention of ZIV syndication in his description that threw me since ZIV distribution didn't start until January 1948, give or take a week or so. If Mr G had the actual 1943 episode I would have assumed it would have been sponsored by Horton's Ice Cream.

Here's the summary for 1944. Is anyone reading any of these summary posts? I haven't had any feedback so far re: my comments / assumptions.

Main comments for this year are:
1. The show continues to bounce around in different locations but remains very popular.
2. Full newspaper descriptions are becoming harder to find. More title gaps appearing.
3. I haven't been able to find a single program from this year. Dave Goldin claims to have half a show as does Jerry, but the dates are different. Newspaper title matches DG's entry.
4. One of the funniest things was alot of BG paper references for a guy scoring goals and assists for the Buffalo Bisons AHL hockey team. BG sure gets around!

44/01/02 124 The Adventure Of The Haunted Theater There is now a Bulldog Drummond playing hockey for the Buffalo Bisons of the AHL
44/01/09 125 Terror In the Circus

Martin Grahms had a bunch of BD episodes a few years back when he was trying to sell recordings. Maybe you want to contact him (I don't expect you'll get any recordings, but you may get some more info).

BD is something I've rarely come across and I suspect I have the usual recordings. I don't think he ever came out of the fog for me.

Thanks for the work though

Main comments for 1945

1. The first show of the year has the same title as the last show of the previous year. Perhaps that last show was pre-empted for some reason.

2. On 45-09-17 everyone except the west coast stations are on the same day.

3. Other than a couple of weeks where I added / changed show titles, the list below reflects the Otter log. Primary reason is that, with a couple of exceptions, out of almost a hundred paper references ech week, the Chicago Tribune is the only paper to give a title.

45/01/01 176 The Finger Of Suspicion Same title as last week. Pre-emption??
45/01/08 177 The Case Of The Ice Death
45/01/15 178 The Case Of The Cheated Hangman
