Quiet, Please! - Page 2 Empty I appreciate the show being posted but...

Post by Wiscotr on 9/27/2019, 6:52 pm

Thanks very much for posting but I was wondering why the run time is so short? The several Radiola records I purchased (long ago) were always complete. OTRR has a copy found here:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It runs 29 minutes. Your Radiola copy runs just over 23 minutes.

Just a curious point, but thanks again for posting the show.

Hi Wiscotr! That's a good question. The reason for this is because most of the rips of The Thing on the Fourble Board taken from the Radiola record erroneously include a Peter Lorre performance of The Cask of Amontillado at the end after the Quiet Please episode, which is on the same side of the record. I posted that separately in the The Big Show thread.

Love this review: (re: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Reviewer: NoSpillBlood - favoritefavoritefavoritefavorite - October 20, 2014
Subject: Two points/corrections
First, the presence of the Peter Lorre reading of Cask of Amontillado is the giveaway that this upload of The Thing on The Fourble Board is copied from a '70s LP put out by The Radiola Company of Croton On Hudson, NY. Contrary to what someone else here states, no one passed it off as part of the show -- no intent to pad programming or con anyone was intended. Rather, it was part of Radiola's ongoing effort, while they were around, to give buyers as much value for their money as possible. (That The Thing on the Fourble Board is far and away the cleanest transfer here should -- should -- silence all carping about it.)

Second, although there are people who habitually mangle sound files, then upload them to this site as if they were purest gold, this is not the case in this particular instance. The reason there is exactly one clean and crisp Quiet Please sound file here is because it was lifted off an LP that had a very rare, superior sound source.

The sound quality of existing Quite Please shows, the entire series, has always been very low fi. Even wikipedia mentions that most shows have sub-par sound. I can attest that when I bought tapes of the show during the '70s, they already sounded as if they had been recorded off a distant radio station, with a thicket of static, fading, audio ghosting and interference in the foreground. One might say the tradition continues. No one has screwed up these transfers any time recently. This site's usual suspects cannot be blamed in this case, love to blame them though I do too.

Most importantly, thanks to the uploader for sharing these. I understand that you aren't some inept kid wrecking pristine sound files with a dirty needle. By posting what you have, you're doing a hell of a lot more than the erstwhile perpetual critic wannabes.

Quiet Please is one of my all-time favorites (I have a lot of all-time favorites) and when I began to listen to it, probably around 2007, I assumed the shows were recorded that way. As a way to give this disembodied voice an otherworldly feel and sound to it as it is breaking into our plane of existence to chill our bones with a scary story.

And here I find out the shows are of extremely inferior sound quality, which by the way does not affect my enjoyment any. - Tom

Post by JazzMan on 9/29/2019, 11:06 am

I'm trying to make sure that the set I'm posting is complete - well as complete as possible - and so I did a check of Pavene because I wanted to make sure I did not have episode 20 (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair). At the end of Pavene Cooper makes a very strange statement. Following Pavene will be episode 107 titled Quiet Please:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Does anyone know if this means 106 episodes (including the Audition) or ???

JazzMan wrote:If anyone has better recordings of these earlier Quiet Please plays - please post them. I have about 2 more cassettes and then its mostly from reel.

I have a set of 88 (I think) episodes from reel (one is only half an episode).  It's the typical 12 episodes per reel @ 3 3/4 ips, from someone who traded them in the 80's or early 90's.  My copy is on minidisc which uses something called ATRAC encoding so anyone checking the spectrals might see it's not 100% lossless, although it's near enough.

These are 100% unprocessed.  The few episodes that look like they're clipped were like that on the original reel, but luckily analogue clipping doesn't cause the horrible clicking sounds you hear with digital clipping.

It might be possible to process them and improve them, but please don't bother if it introduces all sorts of audio artifacts like I hear in so many files.  I know with dehiss people often have a tendency to want to remove every last trace of hiss and the result is the audio sounds like garbage, so you'll have the ridiculous situation of having a flac file that sounds like a 32kbps mp3, and what's the point of that??  In this case nobody needs to use dehiss because there is no hiss to begin with! --- One good thing I've noticed with many reel to reel tapes is there's almost no hiss at all.  I don't know if I've just been lucky or if it's a common feature with reels??

Can someone tell me how many episodes exist?  Assuming there's more than the 87 and a half episodes I have.

As well as the 1949.06.25 episode entitled "Quiet Please" I've seen some lists say that the 1948.03.29 version exists also.  Is this correct or is it a misdated copy of the 1949 version?  Ditto the 2 versions of "In the house where I was born". I have the first version but see some lists say both versions exist.  Are they different or copies of the same file?

Anyway here's the first few I transferred earlier this evening.  I downloaded episode 1 from this thread and mine is a definite improvement.

Post by JazzMan on 10/3/2019, 12:09 am

Hi Egg_Crisis,

Thank you for your participation

One good thing I've noticed with many reel to reel tapes is there's almost no hiss at all.  I don't know if I've just been lucky or if it's a common feature with reels??

There is (sometimes a lot) less hiss than on cassette.

Can someone tell me how many episodes exist?

That is an excellent question - um maybe "available" is a better gauge because there tends to be a policy of "Don't list or trade" on some material - which is fine and some episodes seem to be held by Paley and ...

I think Jerry's log is a pretty good gauge of what's available, though I did post the 1st half of Be a good dog darling (his log indicates he doesn't have) and he's listing 88 episodes. Given that, I'm not even sure I have those 88.

As well as the 1949.06.25 episode entitled "Quiet Please" I've seen some lists say that the 1948.03.29 version exists also.  Is this correct or is it a misdated copy of the 1949 version?

I checked the log I have and the players are the same for both dates. If the players differ then you have 2 different recordings

Additional Players:
Lotte Stavisky
Vinton Hayworth

if they state the next play - you'll know

Ditto the 2 versions of "In the house where I was born". I have the first version but see some lists say both versions exist.  Are they different or copies of the same file?

Additional Players:
Lotte Stavitsky
Cecil Roy
Betty Ragge
Pat O'Malley

if they state the next play - you'll know

I can't think of anything else other than iff the dialogue changes or the delivery changes since I believe they were still Re-Performances of a script and not a "Repeat" or "Rebroadcast".

Anyone else?

At any rate, I really believe there are 107 episodes of Quiet Please and this might be the 106 that are known AND the audition OR we're missing something.

I also don't like that the same cast was listed for the episodes that were "Repeated" (People get busy and move onto other projects or can't get the right scheduling ...) in the log I have. It's just suspicious.

I only have the 2nd version of "Quiet Please" and the 1st version of "In the house where I was born", that's why I was asking.  If anyone has both it's easy enough to hear if they're the same or different, as nobody ever delivers the same lines in the same way twice.  I'll go seeking out the other versions after I've transferred mine, but in the meantime I'd hoped someone had already compared them.

One fairly new phenomenon I've noticed within the last few years is with shows (I noticed one Witch's Tale set do this only a few weeks ago) where the log indicates one particular title was broadcast more than once, with online collections people have taken the same show (often the same identical file) and listed it a number of times with different dates.  Do people not realise it's the same file or are they doing it deliberately?  It's annoying and I wish they'd stop it!

Do people not realise it's the same file or are they doing it deliberately?

I don't believe that people realize that most network shows were re-performances.

That is not to say that there aren't "Repeats". When the syndicated Witches Tale (recorded to ET and then broadcast from disc) was played on ?WGN? or over in New Zealand they probably reran a few of the episodes, but all of the WOR/Mutual Broadcasts were live. Given how Cole liked to change the script, maybe not even the same script was used for re-performances.

For the witchy tales you need a log for AU, Kruschen, US Syndicated, and WOR/Mutual. Given there were 330? broadcasts on WOR/Mutual and 2 extant recordings - why use a 99% empty log? that just confuses people. Better to make a combined log for the US broadcasts. The AU log is good because iff not available - at least the recordings exist.

Just my 2 cents
