Re: Hour Of Charm
More not very subtle editing by AFRS.
Starts out OK but no idea how they came up with the rest of this obviously assembled show.

Re: Hour Of Charm
I actually have the disc for this one. The date 11-18-45 is clearly etched on the vinyl and some of the numbers in the papers are actually included. However, there are too many numbers that are not introduced, indicating to me it's yet another assembled program. Grrr. I wish there was a network version to compare.

Re: Hour Of Charm
Where did they find the time to assemble programs and maybe more importantly - why?
Thank you for the programs and research

Re: Hour Of Charm
In AFRS produced shows like GI Journal, Command Performance, To The Rear March etc., they did it quite often, especially at the end of the run where they would take clips from previous shows and perhaps update with a new singer or new songs. It prolonged the run when new material might not be available. That would not be true with network shows where new material was available all the time except for summer breaks, which would be an obvious time for AFRS assembly to take place. None of the shows I've posted so far would be due to that. Another possibility is that there was a problem with the network transcription, so AFRS had to conjure something up. Either a quickly assembled show, a filler show if they had one on hand, or perhaps even a replacement show from another series, which was another often used tactic.
Why this might have been done with Hour Of Charm shows, I have no idea.
I have the discs for both of today's shows. They both have the date etched and they both seem close to the program content reported in the papers.

Re: Hour Of Charm
To anyone who might have the slightest interest, it appears the 10th anniversary program at the start of the 10th year was measured from the first time the program came under the sponsorship of GE, which I suppose makes sense.

Re: Hour Of Charm
Then, on September 1, 1946, the 10 year run on NBC ended and the girls took their first break in 6 years. The break only lasted for four weeks however, and on September 29, 1946 the Hour Of Charm resurfaced, this time on Sunday afternoons on CBS, but still sponsored by GE. Not only had the group not had a break, they had played concerts across the country, appeared in two feature films and made numerous 'shorts'.
The dedication at the end of the shows has now switched to girls schools across the country.
The next one I have follows. I do not know the AFRS # since AFRS may have used fillers or assembled programs during the break and I don't have the disc.

Just to throw in another two cents... I've observed situations where on the network broadcasts the commercial material might run into or right up against the next program element such that they could not be cleanly separated for AFRS release and the entire bit had to be excised. No clue how common that may have been but recall noting it on several occasions when I was trying to track AFRS shows to items in the "Tobacco Scripts" archive...

Re: Hour Of Charm
I really appreciate your posting this series. I don't think any other series quite conveys the emotional feel of early 1942 quite like this series (Though many of the recordings I have heard come from later in the war). At that period of the war France was occupied, Britain and Russia were reeling from the German assault and the Japanese were expanding everywhere in the pacific. The outcome of the war was very much in doubt.

Re: Hour Of Charm
I've been going through my copies of this series to see if there is anything you need. Rather than post stuff which may have the wrong dates, etc. I'll just ask first. I have one labeled #32 with the first song Tonight We Love.
