Appointment with Fear Empty Appointment with Fear

Post by nickp57 on 1/22/2020, 1:38 am

Recently, I've been digging through my boxes of cassette tapes in the garage to see if there are any hidden treasures that I haven't been able to track down digitally. I found several Appointment with Fear tapes that have left me confused, so I'm hoping someone might be able to clear something up for me. These are 4 of the episodes I found (I've transferred them to FLAC -- sound quality isn't great, so I did some minor cleaning):

Appointment with Fear: Dogs

Appointment with Fear: I'll See You Next Friday

Appointment with Fear: Identikill

Appointment with Fear: Target

(Unfortunately I didn't realize posting these went against Cobalt Club policy -- if you're still interested in hearing the shows feel free to direct message me)

Two other shows I have a case for but no tape are Morning Glory and A Fine and Private Place. Now, I'm confused because I can't find any information on these episodes. Jerry Haendiges' log includes a number of seasons of the show, but none of these titles, and his log ends at 1955 -- weird, because the opening music for these episodes is Bernard Herrmann's score for PSYCHO, which wasn't released until 1960.

Does anyone have more information on these?

Strange, it sounds 60s/early 70s and was broadcast on BBC World Service, but indeed I can find no mention of a version of the series that has these titles - interestingly, Julian Glover is in "I'll See You Next Friday" and according to his bio, his father was a BBC Radio Producer - the story was written by Roy Russell who wrote lots of TV shows in the 60s/70s, but I could find no mention of this story or any radio work (yes, I got a bit Sherlock Holmes on this show, trying to figure out when it's from!).

I wasn't familiar with the show, so was surprised to see the first BBC version from the 1940s was a British version of Suspense, complete with the same theme music and "Man In Black" host....only 4 from that series survives according to the CD offered on Amazon (not the same as the 4 posted above, obviously). I'm part of a British FB group that hunts down lost radio/TV material and will inquire there! These may be "lost shows"....

These are in the OTRRG library but I'll link here anyway since there's a thread and maybe others were in the dark like me regarding this show:

Awesome! Thanks for looking into it dbf! I agree, they sound like 60s/70s, but something else I forgot to add -- the credits say they're produced and directed by Derek Hoddinott, who was also behind the great BBC radio series Haunted: Tales of the Supernatural. Those all ran from 1981-84, so there's a chance these Appt w/Fear episodes were produced closer to that time. (That said, a Google search shows that he has BBC writing credits going back to 1964 and quite a few producing and directing credits throughout the 1970s).

Thanks for posting those other episodes and thanks for posting The Speaking Clock, bojim1. Here is the one other show I have from that period:

Appt with Fear - The Pit and the Pendulum

Just a cautionary note here, Folks: Please remember that we cannot post BBC programs (as well as shows after 1962) here at the Cobalt due to copyright rules. I think we can let this one go, but let's exercise even more caution in the future to ensure we don't get Auntie Beeb upset with us.
Thanks.

It's extraordinary that there is no mention or documentation about this show....no one on the Kaleidoscope (British TV/Radio lost recordings specialists) group have figured it out yet. Can't find the show titles matched with writers/actors.... BBC Genome project lists almost all TV/Radio the BBC ever broadcast (but apparently doesn't include the BBC World Service!), and no mentions. That fact leads me to think that it's a show made for the world service using stories from another series. However, then those titles should show up in the Genome database if they were BBC stories.I won't rest until I figure it out! haha...

Hey, no worries, Nick. Since the show's origin is cloaked in mystery anyway, you haven't caused any actionable heresy. Very Happy  I appreciate your readiness to add to the community and collections.

It's just my job to be a caretaker and check out all the little details to ensure we're working at peak efficiency.

BTW: DBF, you might want to check Wikipedia Appointment With Fear for a complete rundown of the show.  Save yourself some grief, buddy. Click on the blue link to be magically transported there.

The Wikipedia doesn't include this version of the show, that's why there's a "mystery" here! That was the first thing I checked....
