Right. Enough ranDOM CapiTaLisaTion for now.
I just wanted to write a post here for no other reason other than to satisfy my inner need to post on The Cobalt Club and revisit my younger self. Bloody hell. The good old days eh.
I recall a time period which is (a bit too) easy to romanticize about that it was when people treated each other with nought but kindness, there was very little anger either in the streets or, especially, online and the world was just a more friendly, more enjoyable place to be a part of.
Or was it that different?
The past is always easily viewed through the spectacles of the rosey tint! I really ought not to put them on quite so often!
Who wants to recall the horrors of the past though !?!????
I jest, I jest.
I do remember though, seriously, the Cobalt Club really was a friendly part of the online world. I loved that about it, even back then. I noticed a growing unfriendliness in the online world back then and I distinctly remember it because I had two favourite websites, due to their being the most friendly websites and communities I knew of, which kind of made them stand out:
The Cobalt Club.
MVGroup Documentary Site.
My interest in OTR has waxed and waned over the years. I recently found myself getting very much into an old TV series I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago. 'The Racket Squad'. It is an entertaining Police procedural show with more than a nod or two towards Dragnet(!). It has all the hallmarks...the intro by the chief at the beginning complete with his summary of the characters and their sentences/future to come at the end. As a lifelong Dragnet lover, firstly the OTR which I became addicted to through this very site(!) And then the TV series (which I downloaded in torrent form at one point not long after my OTR & Cobaltian days...) I immediately warmed to this series.
There are a good number of episodes along at archive.org. As far as I can tell, the known available episodes are there for anyone to view.
This search result page will find them for you if you're interested.
Click me Stream Some Good Old TV
The Racket Squad is a dept in the Police station that are tasked with tracking down and arresting those perpetrators that are involved in the many scams and 'rackets' that were going on back in those days. Seems there was a different racket for every day of the year
Anyway I digress. Point was, this Racket Squad got me looking on websites about the classic detective shows of a certain period, which led me to, etc, etc, etc and ... yup you guessed it - Old Time Radio time again! During my searching I found many OTR sites that I hadn't known in the past and well, I enjoyed reading them. Then I made the discovery - ashamedly I must say, to admit it took me so long - that one of my favourite websites today, archive.org, carries so much OTR it is just incredible to see. Especially when I think back on how I used to trawl the http sites looking for the odd live http link to an episode of Boston Blackie or Johnny Dollar that would then take 30 minutes to download...
Good old days? Haha! The slow old days eh.
Well I could likely go on for hours but as it is almost 2am and tiredness is kicking in, I must get to bed and get some good rest in prep for my devouring the forum tomorrow and yup, getting involved in posting some replies!
I really am soooo happy to learn the Club is here and back and active!
I recognise a few of the old names. I used to have this habit of using a random username on different forums and websites when I joined because I didn't want to leave a trail of linkable profiles all over the net and valued my privacy so much. In many ways I am glad to have done that, especially when Facebook and Google came along, they have no clue who I am really! But I cannot remember which names I used where sometimes and well, I don't know if my name was paulgeaf on here or something else?!
Either way, I know of no other Paulgeaf all one word, so if you knew of me then, it is I, the same guy from South East England. Born Scottish guy and always will be.
Pleased to meet your acquaintance and get reacquainted with some of you if we've already spoken all them years ago.
Since I was a member one part of my life has changed hugely. I took up The Art of Prestidigitation, Conjuring,Magic. I am obsessed with it, almost as much as with OTR
and so I put this out there in the hopes that there are others of us, OTR-heads with a love for The Art of Magic! If so, we must chat in the future. Not yet though as I seemingly cannot do private message yet...

Good Morning Paulgeaf
If you were around back in the days when I started to frequent the OTR groups about 2001, we probably crossed paths back then.
I started in the Yahoo groups and expanded from there. There are still quite a few from the old Yahoo groups around but many have passed on.
I still have a long time friend from the Isle of Wight that I converse with every so often. Amazing how on line friendships can last with a common thread.
Welcome back and we'll converse more in the future.
Best regards
Art

Hey Paul good to see you back still with your exuberant style. I have missed our discussions of Doctor Who. I wanted to get your take on the last two seasons of Jodi I love her as the Doctor but IMHO the writing under Chibnall is dismal. Maybe 4 good shows out of two seasons.
Magic I love it. I collected old books on Magic the Houdini, Carter the Great, Thurston I prefer the pre-60's Magicians but do like Penn and Teller. So hells yes to discussions of magic. I just picked up some older books on card magic so yeah. We shall create another thread for that.

Welcome Home Paul! Some of the nuts and bolts part of the place are a bit different. But we still have some of the friendliest and most generous members on the web. And it's always reason to celebrate, when one our old friends finds their way back.
Re: Cobalt Club! Cobalt Club! I MEAAAAAN WOWEEEEE!! THIS IS THE, THE COBALT CLUB WITH COBALTIANS GALORE! THE REAL PLACE. For um, real.
Hello everyone!
Wow what a welcome. I feel like I am coming home from a long trip back to the warmth of a family that I have longed to get back to and regale with tales of the far East and beyond.
HOWEVER!!!!!......!
It is not I.
What I mean is, you seem to have mixed me up with someone else. Now, I've always used the paulgeaf name and never ever seen anyone else with the same, so I'm pretty sure that there's not another paulgeaf cobaltian that graced the forums of old and we somehow passed like ships in the Night, never to meet or know of the others' existence. The thing that made me realise is that I've be at been so hot with Dr Who and only found my interest in the whole show in the past couple of years ie. Way after cobalt club!
So I am not who you think I am it would seem.
Which leaves me, and you, in a bit of a quandary. I mean, firstly, I'm wondering who you are thinking of when you thought I was that person and secondly, does anyone remember little old me from Sussex with a huge interest in The Shadow (I'm sure it was my main interest back then so I just might have talked about or asked about it..) and The Black Museum. I probably had another nickname back then which really doesn't help anyone. I even went to the Wayback machine and looked at the posts and member list. Unfortunately not very much of that is archived
Anyway my friends, I wasn't sure what to say here but I had to tell the truth of this matter as you will no doubt agree.
I will be pleased to meet some of you, and to the ones I met before, Seamus, space cadet, I say howdy.
I am so happy to learn you are a lover of the prestidigitation arts Seamus! Great stuff! I am currently trying to get through Bobo's Coin Magic just now and it really is fantastic. A little area to talk magic might be a good thing!
Ok, I've done it again. Used way more words than is necessary as I always do so time to stop.

paulgeaf I do remember you and we had only one paulgeaf back then so I think its you. I remembered your condition. I now realise I have mistaken you for another UK member who was in production and knew people on the Dr. Who production. Does anyone remember who that was I cannot remember his username here.
Welcome back and I will get a magic thread going. That will be fun.

Aah that is good to know Seamus. I am glad we've sorted the mystery out. The memory is a fickle mistress! Especially after a decade or two has passed. I forget what I left one room for when I enter another
It really is so great to be back here. I've asked my son to get in the loft today and get my OTR encyclopedia, I'm really getting back into the mindset I used to enjoy here. There's quite a few postings of shows that are new to me also, and that is just a treat! Hence I want to look them up in the book and educate myself once more.
I will look forward to the magic section. You can tell me what books you have. A funny coincidence Seamus - I absolutely LOVE all the old books, pre 1960s, and have collected a few off versions from archive.org. I love the way they wrote back then and there is so much to learn from those books.

It Haha! That was fun. I didnt expect that at all.
I am assuming you can do a version of this routine yourself?
I first learned from The Royal Road to Card Magic book and it has all The basic and classic phases/moves in there. It's a trick that could last all day, as this video shows.
Thanks for sharing that!
