Martin Caidin (technical specialist for the New York State Commission of Civil Defense) says that, "Evacuation is not a primary purpose of Civil Defense." Mrs. Austin Tobin of the New York Civil Defense Organization states: What to do if you don't have access to a basement. The responsibility for caring for the inform should be left to air raid wardens. Girls can work as messengers and dealing with traffic. Children should wear I.D. tags. Plan for Survival. May 16, 1951. Program #17. The Civil Defense Radio network. "Question Box.". Martin Caidin, Technical Specialist for the New York State Civil Defense Commission, and Joan Gould answers questions from listers. The are no plans for civilians to wear I.D. tags. In case of attack, park your car and leave the keys in the ignition! Some of the advice is pretty simplistic: pets should be left to the care of the ASPCA, if attack occurs while you're on a bus, drop to the floor. In tall buildings, the lower floors are safest, windowless hallways are ok, boiler rooms may be unsafe. Bill Leonard (host), Martin Caidin, Joan Gould. 14:17.

Plan for Survival. June 27, 1951. Program #23. The Civil Defense Radio network. "Warden Service." A talk by Mrs. Adelaide Healy, Special Assistant to the Director of the Warden Service of the State of New York. A minimum of 400,000 wardens will be needed, more than half of them will be women. Only 55,000 have been recruited to date. Morris Shamos, City Director of Information and and training for the Air Warden Service says that 250,000 wardens will be needed in New York City, one for every 500 persons. There's something wrong with Mr. Shamos' math. In 1950, the population of New York City was 7,892,000. 250,000 wardens works out to one warden for every 32 persons. Bill Leonard (host), Adelaide Healy, Morris Shamos. 14:09.
