Re: Suspense Upgrades
This is believed to be an east coast broadcast. There are three recordings of this episode; each have some audio defect, so there is no "full sound" recording available. This one has very narrow range and has a delayed close before the CBS ID. There is an aircheck with a "Bulova Watch Time" with a rushed close, and then another recording that matches the rushed close. I believe that my "rushed close" was identified as west coast a long time ago before this other recording appeared.
This script was originally intended for Keenan Wynn in April 1946. They substituted Night Reveals for a repeat performance. Spier would juggle scripts around for a variety of reasons, such as the star's availability for rehearsals or when he believed that a particular script would be a better fit for an upcoming guest. Repeats in this period of the series, excepting scripts like Sorry, Wrong Number and Dead Ernest which had planned repeats, were usually indications of something not going as desired or expected in the days leading to the broadcast.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Suspense always had to be flexible in its production planning. This press item illustrates that:
Slow Burn was delayed and they used today's episode Four Hours to Kill. That change may have been made because Slow Burn was a better fit for Dick Powell, in their mind, or the script was not ready. Four Hours to Kill was used by Spier the prior year when he was producing Philip Morris Playhouse, and starred Howard Duff. Any time there's a repeat in this era of Suspense, even from a different series, it's usually a change in availability of the planned star or that the intended script was not gelling in rehearsals, or they decided to hold the script for a star who was newly signed for an upcoming broadcast. You'll see it in the clips below.
The other change was shifting Love, Honor, and Murder to Mr. Diogenes. If you're wondering what the reference in the item is to Danny Kaye, it was to I Never Met the Dead Man which aired a couple of nights before.

The episode was on Philip Morris Playhouse when that series was produced by Spier. It starred Howard Duff, obviously a Spier favorite.

If anyone has a better sounding higher encode that would be greatly appreciated.
The script was also done on television on Four Star Playhouse with David Niven with the title Touch and Go. There are some OTR supporting actors in the program.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
This is a rare aircheck of Rave Notice with Milton Berle. The drama portions were recorded on July 21, 1950, with the rest of the program performed on the day of broadcast. This accommodated Berle's schedule as Suspense was already off for the Summer. The procedure was to edit the taped portion prior to broadcast and then the tape would be played while the orchestra and announcers would perform live on day of broadcasts. At that time, union music and perhaps other agreements charged more for recorded broadcasts and therefore less for live ones. Since there was no intent to re-play the tape as a repeat, it was cheaper to perform live. The taping of the drama portions aided in fitting Suspense into guest star schedules but also allowed Lewis to better guide the performances of movie performers in the subtle and sometimes unfamiliar aspects of radio performances and to take advantage of the many other flexibilities the technology offered in editing and getting to desired timing. In all the scripts I looked at last year in my visit to Thousand Oaks Library, this was the longest gap I found between recording and broadcast. The usual time between recording and broadcast was one or two weeks, often less.
The prior week's Rose Garden included a recorded clip of Berle teasing the Rave Notice broadcast.
Note the marking of the script to switch the doubled character of "Judge" from Kearns to Averback (whose name is misspelled on the cover).

Re: Suspense Upgrades
This is a strange one -- a missing AFRS recording that was so very bad I had to restore it with some network clips. The recording would be unlistenable otherwise since those portions are straight distortion with no aspect of the performance that is detectible. The difference in the two recordings is significant, so this is a "completist" situation and definitely not the copy you'd select for listening.

The particular episode is now available in better sound. We now have confirmation from the source this is an AFRS recording at its origin into circulation.
