Sell Me Your Life posted yesterday and today's John Barbey and Son are each the only copies of potential east-west pairs found so far. Please check collections for copies that have different time-to-ID characteristics or other attributes.

Some of the upcoming recordings are significant upgrades in sound quality.

We have the east-west pair of this episode. The one we are posting today is an audio upgrade to a very bad sounding one recently found. The other one goes directly to the network ID without pause and is much better sounding. That one was posted earlier.

This is the only version we have of an east-west pair; we also have an AFRS version. Checking old collections for different recordings is appreciated. If a Cobaltian colleague could compare the AFRS and this version to possibly find a difference in the drama part of the program. This can be difficult; Suspense direction and acting are often in stunning lockstep in the multiple broadcasts, but they do occur. This would help identify the AFRS as being drawn from a different performance than our sole network recording.

Post by greybelt 9/13/2020, 8:01 am

Today's post is the pair of east-west broadcasts, still unable to discern which is which. If anyone spots any additional difference in the recordings, please note that. One of the pairs I worked on this week had a difference where Truman Bradley held back a cough while reading a PSA. Another is one where Elliott Lewis almost muffs a name coming out of mid-show commercial. It really is amazing how good these folks were in repeating their performances. Of course, if they had training in theater, they were used to that. But that was usually weeks and weeks of rehearsals. That was not radio's schedule. It is stunning how dramatic portions are within microseconds difference among the regular Suspense cast. Differences are often more likely in the performances of the guest stars. When I worked on Palmer Method a few weeks ago, Ed Gardner's intonations were clearly different in one compared to the other for some lines and it was obvious. That was one of the risks of having non-dramatic actors in lead roles... but it did not affect the story in any way.

This first recording may have fallen out of circulation because of its sound quality. The other is much better, and is an upgrade from past postings.

KDM U R D BEST! How did I miss that one? So very much appreciated. Great catch!

At the end of the programs, Helmut Dentine and Nancy Kelly praise each other's acting prowess and mention their latest projects. After that, the direct to ID recording has a plea for nurses by Kelly to help in the war effort; the 5 sec to ID recording does not have the nursing message.

Duly noted! Hail Cobaltia! Smile

That reminds me of a similar difference between the East and West coast broadcasts that I meant to mention regarding "The Fountain Plays" (11/23/44) when you posted one of them the other week. The broadcast with the two-second delay before the station ID contains a spot at the end regarding nurses in the war effort; the one with the 30 second delay does not.

THANKS very much! Now noted in the log and the E-W spreadsheet. The one without sound like it could have been edited but the program time, even if slow, would still not have time for the announcement. Do you hear what I hear? The recording of that one is really noisy and LQ.

The west coast version of this episode was found on a reel purchased in the early 1980s -- and east and west were there together! So they were in circulation at that time... and the west version just fell away. Both are in nice sound, the EC one is a very nice upgrade from a direct disc dub.

This episode was originally planned for 1945-04-26, as was Two Sharp Knives. The latter got the slot, and then it was postponed for coverage of the death of FDR. TSK was not performed until June.

This first recording is a very nice upgrade; this episode has always been difficult to find in this kind of quality, and finally we have it! The second is LQ, but different in time to ID. Any other noted differences would be appreciated.

Garfield's career was going well. Destination Tokyo and They Made Me a Criminal were in the theaters. A few years later he would have his Red Channels issues, and in process of correcting them with the planned publication of I Was a Sucker for a Left Hook, died mainly from a suspected but undiagnosed heart defect at age 39. (There was no heart imaging technology at the time to do so, but a defect was suspected, not known until his death). Many blamed the stress of the blacklist.

This is part of an e-w pair, and there is also an AFRS recording of this episode. This has a 10 second wait for the CBS ID and the sound is not as good as the other recordings. That makes this recording a completist endeavor. For listening pleasure, choose the previously posted network version that has a 6 second pause or the AFRS version. Any other documented differences between the two network copies or a means to determine the coast designation would be greatly appreciated.

Marshall was a Suspense favorite from the beginning, and loved doing radio. I had no clue he lost a leg in WW1! During and after WW2 he did a lot of private visits to veterans hospitals to work with and encourage amputees as they adjusted back to civilian life. The Wikipedia page is quite interesting.

THE EARLIER POSTING ABOUT August Heat has been replaced by the information and the new links below. If you downloaded the previously posted file, please delete it... and read on...

There are FOUR different recordings, likely the two east-west as part of it.

1) Now. Roma Wines, R-O-M-A, made in California... -- this is confusing because this opening was not used until early 1946 -- I can't detect an edit
2) Now, the Roma Wine Company of Fresno, California... -- after Kearns announces the role Dennis Hoey played, Bradley says "Before Mr Colman returns to the microphone, this is Truman Bradley..." and then after the commercial, Ronald Colman speaks about the 7th War Loan Drive (THIS VERSION IS NEW TO CIRCULATION)
3) Now, the Roma Wine Company of Fresno, California... -- after Kearns announces the role Dennis Hoey played, Bradley says "This is Truman Bradley..." and then after the commercial, there is no message from Ronald Colman
4) The Roma Wine Company of Fresno, California... is an odd recording that has a clipped end. After the Roma Champagne pitch, there is a quick beginning of a musical arrangement and the recording ends. This might be from a latter day rebroadcast of some type. There is a disc scratch or some kind, and the "Now" may have been edited out as unplayable.

There was a fifth recording that had a clipped open and a cut closing. It has been determined that this was just a badly edited version of #3 above.

The R-O-M-A version is still a completist mystery and we still don't know which recording is east or west. But here are two recordings with gratitude to Keith Scott, once more, who has provided this new recording (that he had no inkling was special in any way), and an upgrade to the commonly circulating one.

This is a repeat of 1942-12-22

This particular repeat performance was delayed by two news events: the death of FDR for its 1945-04-12 planned airing and then for its planned airing of April 26 about the world conference to form the United Nations; despite the two delays, the dialogue was not updated to change 1942 to 1945 to make the story timely (12:28 is an example).

Payne stumbles on John Dickson Carr's name at 28:00; originally planned with Stuart Irwin who was replaced by Frank McHugh.

This script was also used on Sam Spade 1946-08-16 with the same title.

Still looking for the recording that would complete the pair. An AFRS recording of this episode is available.

The pair of east and west recordings exist, and the other recording is the one that is in common circulation. It has 35 seconds to the CBS ID, and is in much better sound. The "Eve / Story of Ivy" (it goes by both names) was done two other times. 1944-10-19 was planned for Lucille Ball but she was unavailable and Nancy Kelly starred. It would later become "The Black Angel" on 1948-01-24 when the script was extended for the hour-long Suspense.

This episode was originally scheduled for 1945-05-03 starring Lana Turner, but when she had problems with performing the nuances of the role, they replaced it with Fear Paints a Picture. Suspense sometimes did have problems with screen actors not being able to execute roles solely with their voice, and this was one of those times. They set aside the script and used it for this broadcast with Ann Richards.

This is a nice upgrade of an east or west version already in circulation. Its corresponding pair has yet to be found.

In July 1945, Suspense ran an odd play, Fury and Sound. It was actually a roast of William Spier done by some of his mentors. The recording is not in circulation. We do have the script as well as the adaptation that was in Suspense magazine. It's discussed in my 2020 edition Suspense book starting on page 149. Even the Radio Life reporter fell for the gag with the fake co-star, "Cliff Cromwell"! One of the other fake stars was "Mark Humboldt." That name would pop up every now and then in Sam Spade scripts whenever they needed a generic name of a person in the script. It was a running gag name that Spier probably threw in whenever he needed it. It's believed at this time that one of the fake actors was portrayed by Jack Edwards (brother of radio actor Sam Edwards whom we hear constantly in Gunsmoke). The script was also performed on the TV series The Unexpected and starred Hans Conried. I can't find a copy of that online anywhere to link to, but I'm always on the lookout for it. An AFRS disc of the program was sold on eBay a few years ago.

I recently found this clip, the only one that I've found that indicates the in-joke background of it may have been known among radio reporters and some listeners. But I don't think they fully grasp some of the early radio heavyweights, like Irving Reis, who were behind it.
