The title of this episode was originally "Break Up", but was likely changed because of the upcoming 1948-12-30 episode with the same name, starring William Bendix.

Hitch-hike Poker was originally scheduled for this date.

There is a strange AFRTS recording with this drama wrapped with the openings and closings of Inner Sanctum; it is not known if this is a mistake or if this was done on purpose by the AFRTS production staff for some bureaucratic reason. If you want to really play with someone's head, take a listen... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Today's post is a comparison of one story being executed in a way to please advertisers by sanitizing the ending, and then nearly a decade later, using the story as originally told. Thanks to chasedad for the heads up on this a year ago.

June of last year I wrote this about the episode....
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
And this item is for chasedad who advised me that the two performances of Celebration had different endings... the implausible happy one under Leader and the violent one under Robson. This item makes it pretty clear that the Leader one was sanitized for Auto-Lite sponsorship. It turns out that Celebration was based on the writer's experience as a reporter in Wisconsin in 1928. The Robson ending mirrors the truth! I have not located an actual news report of the incident yet, but will keep looking.
NOTE: At the time of the news story, Marquis would have been using his true name, Arnold Malmquist, as his byline. If, of course, the story had a byline. The event this episode fictionalizes likely took place in the mid-1920s. The 1928 date might be a little late. Marquis went to Hollywood after his newspaper career, but traveled there many times before.

The original story still can't be found. I may have worn out a server at newspapers.com yesterday trying to find it.

Here's the more true-to-the-original story

This is a repeat of 1946-10-17 Man Who Thought He was Edward G Robinson. The reason for the title difference is not documented anywhere. "Wanted" seems to be better than "Thought" in terms of the description of the plot, but it could go either way.

The script was written by Lesley Raddatz, a worker in the CBS press department, and his only one. We may have been reading his work as press releases all along! He became a well known media writer for TV Guide and Variety. Raddatz may have been working at NBC when it was originally performed in 1946.

This is a network upgrade and also the debut of a missing AFRS version.

This episode was based on the draft of a play by Mel Dinelli ("The Man") that he reworked into a 1945 Suspense script (and 1949) that became a 1952 movie (Beware, My Lovely) that became a Broadway stage play that had many years regional theaters, and then became a TV production in 1960 on Startime. Whew! If that wasn't enough, the next years had British, French, and German TV productions. It looks like there was a 1971 TV presentation in Argentina, too!

The April 1949 Radio Mirror featured Suspense in its annual awards issue. Here is a picture from a rehearsal for this very episode.

Suspense Upgrades - Page 25 1949-213

Paul Frees is mentioned as assistant director. I was not aware of that as a position for him, or if it's permanent in any manner, but there is another picture of him in the story that shows him in the control room watching the script and listening to the broadcast as it goes along, monitoring it progress and timing.

A PDF of the edition is at
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The story is on magazine page 42, PDF page 45

I asked fellow OTR collector Keith Scott about Frees being assistant director. Keith met many of the people involved in animation voice work in the 1970s and 1980s, which included so many radio voices, and their families. When he was researching his book about Jay Ward Productions (The Moose that Roared) he interviewed family members if actors or technicians had passed away or could not be otherwise available. He sent me this FB message. He, too, was surprised to see Frees referred to in this manner...

I was surprised, but he was a restless creative person. His sister told me that around 1949-50 he and other actors were genuinely fearful that TV would soon put them totally out of work. I can only speculate that he took on this role while he was Suspense voice for Leader as a learning curve. But as it transpired in the 50s with TV voice-overs and cartoons, he got far busier than he ever was as a radio actor. I saw on some scripts (including some early Gunsmoke from memory) that announcer Roy Rowan was Macdonnells's assistant director, too.

Keith is responsible for many of the upgrades we have been enjoying here, especially during the Roma era. Keith's marvelous Escape log is available to all at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This repeat performance of Thing in the Window from 1946-12-19 was pulled out of the files after initial publicity for the script Odd Man Out was sent to the newspapers. It was the originally planned performance for this date, with star Robert Montgomery. The 1947 film was still in theaters [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and it is possible that clearance with the studio was not available for some reason in time to prepare for broadcast. Or, the rehearsals did not go well. The script was held until 1952.

This recording has not been updated in seven years. No AFRS recording has surfaced.

Yesterday I "Zoomed" with one of Cobaltia's most esteemed members... TOEBIG! The thread that he invigorated when he joined Cobalt was "Sharing Shows from My Collection" which is likely the Cobalt's most traveled to destination. Just ask, and someone there comes up with the file you've been looking for... a surprising number of times! It is likely the most marvelous oasis of generosity in all of OTRdom. Toebig has been around the hobby a long time, and was SPERDVAC member number 4! Cobaltia is a better place because he is here, and his affection for the hobby and the programs has been contagious in that thread.

Suspense Upgrades - Page 25 Empty Re: Suspense Upgrades

Post by greybelt 1/21/2021, 8:30 am

This episode has not been upgraded in eight years. No AFRS recording has been found.

Ralph Edwards signed an "ad libbing - no pay" contract as did Bob Hope and others. Suspense contracts and those of other series always had clauses that the star would follow the directions of the producers and directors. The Suspense contract had the standard phrase...
"I shall fully cooperate with you in the preparation, design, construction, and presentation of my spot on the program and that I shall not improvise, extemporize, or use unapproved material."
The public was not aware that such agreements were standard, so public relations staff could make a big deal about such a normal part of the agreement to make it seem more special and exclusive than it was. They publicized the clause in the cases of comedians and others known for their ability to ad lib to highlight the unique casting approach of Suspense, to bring more attention to the program, differentiate it from other series, and to underscore that Suspense was a very serious enterprise once the broadcast began.

Edwards was known at the time for Truth or Consequences, and had a long career producing game shows in radio and TV. His This is Your Life series was very popular in the early television era. There are many clips on YouTube.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Edwards

Note the title is referred to as "Ghost Hour." This appears to be a typo.
The Edwards appearance was hyped for weeks before, more than many
other guest appearances. This was the only paper with this title, making
it most likely just an error.

Today's episode has not been upgraded for more than 9 years. No AFRS recording has surfaced.

Spier returned to his Suspense position for the 1949-1950 season. Tony Leader's contract was not renewed and Spier's commitment to Philip Morris Playhouse had expired. Spier had his eyes on movies and television, like most everyone did, and neither of them would really work out for him. But he was in the thick of finding ways to exercise those ambitions, so Norman Macdonnell was added to the production staff as director. It was good training for NM... who would bring us many fine programs in radio's "silver age" of the early 1950s, especially Gunsmoke.

Spier's movie was Lady Possessed , which the Spiers made with the Masons. It did not do well and had mixed reviews.

Today, Radio Archives is promoting one of their Suspense sets. There's an error in their show listings.

The set is listed as having 1947-03-27 Double Ugly. That episode was broadcast on 1947-08-28

My attention was piqued by this because 1947-03-27 is the date of a missing episode. In fact, there are two consecutive weeks, 1947-03-20 and -27 that are missing.

1947-03-20 is Wax Works with Claude Rains starring. This was originally intended as a Hitchcock role! This particular performance may be missing but it was performed again on 1956-05-01 and 1959-03-01. This is one of those missing episodes that would be an incredible find, even though it's not one of the 13 missing single performances.

1947-03-27 is Trial by Jury. This one may be missing, but it was performed again on 1957-06-16.

This was last updated a little over three years ago. There is an AFRS version noted in RadioGoldindex. It has never been found in any of the numerous collections that have been reviewed to compile this set.
