Re: Suspense Upgrades
The original title was "Murder of My Aunt." Sounds too vague, less vicious. Including the person's name seems to make it more... gruesome.

Lupino was in process of divorcing husband Collier Young at this time, and being seen in Hollywood with Howard Duff. Known as an actress, she became highly influential behind the scenes and as a director and producer in a very long career and often rocky personal life. Long forgotten is that she was dealing with polio through the heights of her career.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
After the divorce, Collier Young would marry Joan Fontaine, and Lupino married Duff. They remained friendly and business partners. Young was executive director of Lupino's CBS sitcom Mr. Adams and Eve, which starred Lupino and Duff. (There is an episode at YouTube [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Young was successful in TV as producer of shows most Cobaltian boomers remember: Ironside, One Step Beyond, and The Wild, Wild West.
The Bigamist , now in the public domain [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] was directed by Lupino, with screenplay by Young, and starring Lupino and Fontaine. The original story was by Suspense and Whistler favorite Larry Marcus, but Young added touches of his real life with both women. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Slow Burn with Robert Taylor was originally scheduled for this date. It must have been changed because Dick Powell became available for its performance in February. Whenever Spier had a scheduling issue, he went straight to the file cabinet. This time he grabbed one of the Philip Morris Playhouse scripts he used on 1949-05-13. That version starred Duff, and is in circulation. Only six recordings survive from Spier's 39-episode season running that series.
These were on Suspense prior to being used on Philip Morris Playhouse:
August Heat, Banquo's Chair, Cat and Mouse, Diary of Sophronia Winters, Night Man, Spoils for Victor
These were on Philip Morris Playhouse but were performed again on Suspense:
Four Hours To Kill, Lady Killer, One Millionth Joe, Search for Isabel, Silver Frame
Search for Isabel was first performed when Spier produced The Clock for 13 weeks in 1948. He re-used other Suspense scripts during those weeks: Can't We Be Friends, John Barbey and Son, House in Cypress Canyon, and Bank Holiday.

Big news! While the C3DS was all concerned that now we are posting programs that are past the east-west broadcast period that their positions were in jeopardy, the number of click charges at the copier and paper use skyrocketed as they were making copies of resumes and cover letters. The feeling was understandable. We tried to tell them that the new coffee maker and the repaired soda machine that dispenses only Jolt cola were signs that there were big plans ahead. Things got better in those hallowed halls... and now the next C3DS project is revealed...
Chasedad and Lasombra, the two most prolific C3DS professionals in the department at whom all others, especially the seasonal interns, bask in their impeccable and legendary reputations, are systematically reviewing all of the AFRS recordings for the 1943-1947 period. They will determine with great certainty whether the AFRS recordings were drawn from the east or west broadcasts. Some of the results are already surprising! Many of these were done as upgrades were being posted, but there are other broadcasts that were not part of the process... until now.
The fruits of their labors will be reported here at some point, but as each assignment is completed, results are noted in the online Suspense log.
Please thank these two loyal and enthusiastic Citizens of Cobaltia for their devoted support!

This AFRS version of Consideration is not as good as the network version that was posted a little while ago. But finding an upgrade without the tape squeal satisfies some of the completist spirit. This version has not been upgraded for more than 8 years.

Never Steal a Butcher's Wife was the original title of the script for this episode, and most newspapers had this title in their listings. For some reason it was abridged before air time. This would be the only time the shorter title was used. The longer title returned for 1954 and 1957 broadcasts. This upgrades the upgrade from this summer 2019.

This is another ad from the same Nebraska Auto-Lite dealer that shows original plans for the schedule. The original plan was for Douglas to do Slow Burn on this date instead. That script ended up being done on 1950-02-23. The guess that it was changed from Taylor and held for Powell was likely incorrect, as it went to Douglas first. It likely got moved to Powell once his availability became known, after Douglas was booked, which is later than had been surmised in the prior post.
Taylor to Douglas to Powell sounds like a double play combination...

They couldn't make up their mind for this one! Pit and the Pendulum with James Mason was originally planned, and possibly Crime Without Passion was being considered, too. This AFRS recording is new to the collection, but was known to exist for quite some time. The network copy we have has been the same for 8 years... no upgrade to that has been found.

This one was upgraded about two years ago with a nice file that had a clipped open. This one replaces that. One of the prebroadcast titles for the 1947 broadcast with John Lund included the word "Alonesome" as a play on the words.

IMPORTANT NOTE
I'll be suspending Suspense posts for a week. Fret not! I have some Big Story entries that I want to get onto that thread. There have been some new episodes in these Hehn reels and other sources that need to be written up. I finally finished hand editing the Casey book and now those corrections and revisions need to be put into the master document that has been neglected for so long.
It's just a week of Suspense... but just watch the Big Story entries starting tomorrow! When that's done, then we'll be back to the outstanding theater of thrills...

Re: Suspense Upgrades
It's been a busy Suspense week as lasombra & chasedad, key figures in the intergalactic C3DS research effort have been dissecting east and west broadcasts to determine the specific origins of the AFRS recordings we have. Some of the findings have been fascinating, especially which actors can be counted on to deliver dialogue differences in the broadcasts. Details will be presented at another time, but their generous contributions are what makes Cobalt such a fine place in OTRdom. Thank you to both for their efforts and entertaining emails in the process.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Two Sharp Knives, starring Arthur Godfrey(!) was originally planned for this date. Godfrey never appeared on Suspense. This puts him in a special class with Alfred Hitchcock, George Brent, and Louis Jourdan as being announced but never appearing on the program. There's probably more "announced un-appearances" to be found, whether announced in the papers and fan mags, but especially in the show's closing announcements. Perhaps Cobalt needs another special department like the legendary C3DS... I've heard murmurs in the commissary about "CRUST" forming (Cobalt Researchers of Unfulfilled Show Teases)... or I may have just overheard a conversation about the crispy edge of bread or pizza, or maybe it was about something that was found in the back of the C3Ds fridge when they had the annual clean-out on New Year's Day (it was removed using BBQ tongs and gloves that had hand sanitizer spread on them), so I could be mistaken. My hearing's not what it used to be...

This is a very mild upgrade replacing one from mid-2020. This episode has never been available in really nice, crisp sound. There is also an AFRS version I have in LQ sound that is only 80kps that I have been trying to replace for almost a decade. The hunt continues.
