Today's episode is a nice sounding AFRS copy, joining another we have. The network copy also is available. This was done previously as Hitch-hike Poker.

Today's recording is an update of the episode posted three years ago; no AFRS recording has been found. This is the final appearance of Van Heflin on Suspense, and may have been his final appearance in network radio drama.

Heflin was in 9 Suspense broadcasts
- 1947-01-30 Three Blind Mice
- 1948-08-26 Song of the Heart
- 1949-03-10 Three O'Clock
- 1949-11-10 Murder of Aunt Delia
- 1950-11-30 The Lady in the Red Hat
- 1953-06-08 The Mystery of the Marie Celeste
- 1953-10-12 The Shot
- 1954-05-10 The Last Days of John Dillinger

Still on a haphazard schedule here, nothing bad going on, just getting organized and catching up on lots of things.

Today's Deep, Deep is My Love takes advantage of the popularity of the syndicated TV series Sea Hunt and its star Lloyd Bridges. There are no clean copies around; we could sure use a nice AFRTS copy, but that's not around either. This recording has a clipped open and close. An aircheck copy has commercials edited but full show credits with author attribution. Another copy is a bad low encode but it has a complete open.

The writer is Hank Searls, whose name is often misspelled as "Searles." He also wrote Speed Trap and To None a Deadly Drug. A naval officer whose writing career started late, Suspense was one of his early commercial successes. He had successful novels that were turned into movies and wrote teleplays in the 1960s.

This 1959 version of On a Country Road still lacks a complete network recording. This is an upgrade of a file last upgraded about 5 years ago. It's less bad, I guess. More precisely, I think it's a network recording... it could be a hacked AFRTS version, but it has always circulated as network. If anyone finds an indication that it is something else, your detective work is appreciated.

Still on a haphazard schedule. Finally, the first round of edits to the Casey book are in, and the second and final round will be the next couple of days, and then it's formatting time! I started this thing in 2006, and sometimes it was set aside for two or three years!

Keith Scott sent me his draft Suspense log, similar to his Escape one... WOW!!! is all I can say about it.

We're in 1959 for these posts, which means we're near the end of the series. But we'll start right up again at the beginning as soon as 1962 is done. Still finding upgrades in all these reels...

Here are three episodes that are kind of marginal upgrades, but upgrades nonetheless. Much progress editing the Casey book has been made, and I need a little break to avoid writer's block and look at some edits with fresh eyes... so I figured why not jump back back to Suspense for a little while... Posts will continue to be haphazard for the next days...

NOTE: for all of these episodes, newspaper clippings were posted previously; the ones here are new...

Postings continue to be haphazard, but the good news is that the editing of the Casey book is going well. The irregular schedule will continue a bit longer.

If you're a member of the Metro Washington OTR Club, I'm the speaker for the next meeting on July 9 via Zoom. The topic is Suspense, of course.

Today's recordings is a Christmas episode, and it may be June, but this is a real gift for OTR Christmas in June, I guess. This recording is in marvelous sound, a nice upgrade, a jump up in quality, especially for this era of the series. This was last upgraded 4+ years ago.

The episode stars Bill Lipton who was one of the Let's Pretend kids. He was beloved by the other actors in New York. I met him at a Bridgeport CT convention... it was there before it moved to Newark. The Let's Pretend cast was really close even in the years well after the series was off the air.

Thanks to chasedad we have today's posts of the 1960 Sorry, Wrong Number from an AFRTS-FEN (Far East Network) aircheck. This was not a new performance, but the CBS publicity department made it seem so. This is the 1957 performance re-edited with 1960 format wrappers.

Both the full aircheck and the program alone are offered here. Thank you again, chasedad!

Dear Folks... sorry I haven't written lately Smile

Here's a few programs to make up for my lack of posts as my OTR attention has been elsewhere...

This version of Shipment of Mute Fate has not been updated for more than 9 years. Unfortunately, it is an edited program. This story got me hooked on Escape with its marvelous presentation. That was about 10 years before this cut-down version aired on Suspense.

There are two versions of this episode, each edited slightly differently. I have not found a complete broadcast. The other version sounds better; I've never gotten around to improving the equalization -- has kind of a speaking-in-a-sewer sound to it (without the odor).

There are three versions of this episode, originally done on Mysterious Traveler, that have varying degrees of completeness. This one has a pre-show commercial. These aircheck recordings give us a glimpse of what it was like to hear the programs as originally broadcast.

This recording as a bad opening but is in better sound and more complete than the edited recording we have that has a full opening. These late years of Suspense were mainly all airchecks and collectors had their way with them, some hating the commercials so they took them out... sometimes... cramming as many as they could on a reel because tape cost so much... or some didn't turn on the recorder at the right time... and that was the person from whom we have the better sound for this one!

During this era "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" led directly into "Suspense" on Sunday afternoons; there's been a copy of the 5-15-60 "Johnny Dollar" episode "The Mystery Gal Matter" circulating for years with that Utica Club commercial heard at the start of "Deadman's Story" at its end. I seem to remember hearing that most of the WROW recordings of "Suspense" can be attributed to one person who recorded them (can't remember his name offhand). I wonder if, as a matter of course, he recorded the whole "Johnny Dollar"/"Suspense" hour of broadcasting...this is certainly one instance where we can piece the whole hour together by combining the two recordings.

The person who recorded the programs was Pat Rispole (riss-pohl-ee). Pat recorded from the late 1950s, constantly, especially sports.

Some background can be found at...
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
... it's worth reading the preface to that post.

I have since learned more of the history behind him. Some legends have him as an invalid living alone recording the programs. Another has him as a priest. Pat never married, lived in his parents' house in the Albany NY area and worked in the NY State court system. He passed away at age 53 in 1979, and if it was not for him we would not have many of the late era Gunsmoke, YTJD, or Suspense.

He traded with a lot of people. This is part of a letter I found in Joe Hehn's paperwork:

Fascinating, huh?

The preface notes John Miley and Phil Gries.

Because the Hehn reels had lots of sports, I knew I had to get in touch with John Miley, a legend in sports recording archives.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I spoke to John... he was not interested in the Hehn recordings as I reviewed what was there -- he had much of it already. So I asked him about Pat Rispole.

He said Pat's family called him after he passed away and said he should get to the house (John was in Indiana) because they were going to dispose of Pat's reels. They got in touch with Phil Gries for the TV soundtracks. And not mentioned in the article above about sports recording was the OTR collector John Furman, who got the OTR reels. (John may have recorded some of the WROW stuff, too, at the time, tho not as prolific as Pat Rispole).

So that one day John Miley and John Furman converged on the house and each took all of Pat Rispole's reels.

From what I can tell, John Furman is very likely still among the vertical of us, probably in his very late 80s, but I have not contacted him. John Miley gave me a phone number, but I have not called it yet as I need to do more research on all of this. I had met John Furman at the FOTR conventions in Newark many times in the early 1980s. If anyone is in contact with John, please let me know.

I spoke to Phil Gries about 5-7 years ago and he had no OTR stuff. He has a very large collection, of which Pat Rispole's TV recordings are a very small portion [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

BTW, John Miley is retired, and someone is handling all of his sports recordings and other products. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
John is 90 -- sharp as a tack and a marvelous and happy conversationalist. I really enjoyed my discussions about the Hehn recordings with him. I got off the phone wishing I had made his acquaintance years and years ago.

It would be great if Pat Rispole's OTR recordings still exist somewhere so they could be properly reprocessed using today's incredible tools.

Wow, the John Miley story was a wonderful read. Being a huge baseball fan myself and a diehard Cleveland I_d_ans fan. Sorry, thought I would be PC with their name.

Can anyone access these recordings? Always wanted to hear Cleveland baseball games from the early part of the last century.

Thanks again for the read Greybelt.
