This recording has not been replaced for 13 years! Rita Lloyd was a mainstay of numerous daily TV soap-operas over the years. She was on a lot of late 1950s NY radio, including X Minus One, Eternal Light, YTJD, and of course, Suspense.

Today's recording is a "new" AFRTS version that sounds quite good. There are three different recordings available for this episode. The episode stars the producer's wife, Mrs. Paul Roberts, aka Broadway actress Ellen McRae, aka today as Ellen Burstyn. Like they say, "nepotism begins at home."

Burstyn had lots of names starting in childhood (she was born Edna Rae Gillooly, then Edna Rae Francemore, then Edna Rae Gillooly, then Edna Rae, then the showbiz names get mixed in with Erica Dean, then Keri Flynn, then Edna Rae, then stage and married names, Edna Rae Alexander, Ellen McRae, then Ellen McRae Roberts, and then Edna Rae Bernstein) until the eventual settling on Burstyn, all detailed at the interview transcript at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] She could have had more names… all without being on the lam or in witness protection. Not even Paul Roberts used his actual name in broadcasting or in other projects, "Paul Robert Botstein." So for a while she was technically Ellen McRae Botstein while she was Ellen McRae Roberts. They would be divorced a year or so after this broadcast, married about 3 years.

On the date of this broadcast, Kramer was about 8 months away from his sudden appointment to the YTJD lead role, replacing Bob Readick. The closest Kramer or Readick had to using other names were only on the Readick side. He started as a child actor where “little Bobby” was his name, and when he grew up he was “Robert” and sometimes “Bob.” Far less exciting than Ellen… or is it Edna. Whatever.

Oh yeah, I forgot... there's supposed to be a Suspense recording posted... here it is... a "lost" AFRTS Inferno...

Today's recording updates one I received 9 years ago. This is another George Bamber script. It has always sounded like there is a patched closing to it -- let me know if it seems suspicious to you.

THANK YOU CHASEDAD: The file has now been updated to remove the patched close.

Any Calling All Cars "experts" out there? It turns out that one of the missing Suspense from the Summer 1942 series, Witness on the West-Bound Train, was a CAC script that original writer Harold Medford adapted. I've been trying to figure out which CAC episode it is. I can send the Witness script to anyone who wants to attempt to figure it out. This is the Suspense plotline
A detective and his assistant are on board a passenger train when one man is poisoned, another stabbed and still another pushed out the door. They must determine which of their fellow travelers is the killer before they themselves are murdered.

This was noted in a letter that Medford wrote about (gasp!) 50 years ago...

Not only can I verify that's a patched closing---the NY 1959/60 shows didn't use George Walsh's "Another tale well calculated to keep you in 'Suspense'" at their close, just him saying "Suspense"---I can point to the episode the patched closing is taken from ("My Dear Niece" from 11/23/58):

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

("Green Lorelei" closing taken from 22:51 onwards in "My Dear Niece" file)

The patched close to Green Lorelei has been removed. Please go back to that post and re-download the file. Thanks again, chasedad!

Today's episode is a nice AFRTS version that seems not to be in circulation. One curious aspect about the episode is that there is not a single newspaper clipping about it that can be found... anywhere. I've wondered about this... and there are no clippings for the next two weeks, either. Why? Because Suspense was cancelled! Why spend publicity dollars on something that has no future? More below...

If you don't know Vivian Smolen, she played the lead character on Our Gal Sunday for many years.

It seems that Green Lorelei was the last episode that CBS released any details about. Suspense got caught up in the end of the soap operas of November 1960. One of the articles says that "swan songs were not necessary" because Have Gun Will Travel and Suspense were episodic and not continuing stories. The soap operas tied up loose ends, so the listeners were disappointed but had closure. HGWT and Suspense had no loose ends to tie up, so the listeners were just disappointed because they had closure with every episode. Gunsmoke and YTJD would continue. Gunsmoke lasted until June 1961, and to fill an hour of drama, Suspense would return again to die another day.

The first episode of the return was June 25, 1961. It was under Bruno Zirato, Jr., a staff producer, who would get the shows produced in about four hours studio time. He'd keep calling back the same actors because of how reliable they were, and would always record the dress rehearsals because their spontaneous reading was often better than the final recording. That's the way the radio folk were... so many were used to being handed a script before they went on the air, especially for soap opera work. Zirato was on salary, so would be paid whether or not he did Suspense, making him in the eyes of the bean counters, almost "free." It was all a low-budget operation. Zirato had trouble finding compelling scripts, hence the retreads from Mysterious Traveler that would pop up now and then.

The dreaded "page 40" of a thread is coming up. One morning we will wake up and this thread will be locked and a new one started. It seems to happen when the page count passes 40. It's happened a few times to us, and now it's no big deal. If you can't find the thread you'll know what happened. Don't worry... the new one will be easy to find.

Today's recording has not been updated for about 5 years.

Bernie Grant was one of New York's TV soap opera regulars, especially on Guiding Light and Edge of Night. He was one of those behind-the-scenes actors known for his skill in dubbing foreign films into English (like some of the 1960s "spaghetti westerns"). You can see him in some of the 1980s and 1990s TV programs like the US version of Father Dowling Mysteries and early episodes of Law & Order.

This is an AFRTS recording, "new," but unfortunately LQ. The network recording is better. The script was re-used on Theater Five 3+ years later as "Rebellion Next Week."

What happened to Jimsey Somers? According to IMDb, her last TV appearance was April 1961. After this Suspense appearance, she was in three Theater Five (perhaps more -- we could really use a good T5 log -- contact me if interested in working on one). There are lots of reruns of her TV appearances, in shows like Peter Gunn, in TV newspaper timetables through the 1960s. She also seemed to be a near-regular on the Virginia Graham TV talk show, Girl Talk, in 1965... for some reason my grandmother liked that show. Zero after that. If Jimsey is still with us, she's 84.

Post by greybelt 8/1/2021, 4:19 am

I stumbled on this blogpost via Google yesterday
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
and I learned about the 1949 Suspense comic book. Well, for 2 issues it was the Suspense comic book, and then it became a regular comic book without any script/story tie-ins with the radio or TV program as best as I can tell. From there it looks like it took an EC-ish turn with no mission to adapt specific scripts. (Although the final issue, #29, has a Stan Lee story The Man Behind the Blinds, a title which brought Fletcher's Thing in the Window to mind). Comics were always "borrowing" cores of radio plotlines, so this would not surprise me.

Suspense #1
Suspense Upgrades - Page 39 Suspen10
Adaptations of The Body Snatchers, Statement of Employee Henry Wilson,
The Hangman Won't Wait
, and The Bride Vanishes

Suspense #2
Suspense Upgrades - Page 39 Suspen11
Adaptations of Will You Make a Bet with Death? and Mr. Markham, Antique Dealer

The same blogger also noted that there was an earlier attempt to get Suspense into comics, in the May 1944 issue of Super-Magician Comics, with an adaptation of The Devil's Saint.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The 1944 issue details (there aren't many) are at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

If anyone has more details about these two issues or The Devil's Saint adaptation, or even scans of them, it would be greatly appreciated.

Today's episode has a network recording upgrade and a KCBS San Francisco aircheck that sounds very nice. I wonder if the staff announcer is Frank Knight. Perhaps a Bay Area Cobaltian can let us know. Frank was an early OTR collector, and OTRR got many of his reels a few years ago. They have been included in OTRR purchasing group distros here and there, and some in this thread here.

[/center]

According to the final paragraph of Martin Grams' "Calling All Cars" article (at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ), Medford only wrote for the 1940 Charles Vanda-directed CBS revival of the series. So the script would have aired in late '40 or early '41.

emruf7: Thanks for your finding the CAC info. Unfortunately there are no logs for that second run, and I can find no recordings of it. The newspaper listings are no help in this regard, just minimal information in timetables or similar listings. We'll keep looking! I wasn't aware of that second run -- much appreciated.

Today's episode is an upgrade of a file from 3+ years ago. This Peter Fernandez script was performed again on Theater Five.

There's an actor here with whom I was not familiar: Reynold Osborn. He is listed in RadioGoldindex, but I wanted to see if there was anything else he was in. Not much!

The only non-radio credit I could find in a regional theater in the early 1960s outside Philadelphia. And then... nothing else.

I've wondered for a while if Reynold Osborne and Ted Osborne weren't one and the same person. Ted Osborne was associated with "Suspense" starting in 1942 (when he was the first Man in Black). His credits extend back as far as 1932 and his final credit listed in RadioGOLDindex is the NYC-era "Suspense" episode "Time on My Hands" (9-25-60); then Reynold Osborne appears on the scene seemingly out of nowhere at the end of network radio to appear in a handful of 1961 and 1962 "Suspense" and "Johnny Dollar" episodes. Why a performer would change his stage name that far into his career I couldn't say (but remember our discussing Mason Adams not using his real name in a couple of 1962 "Suspense" episodes?) If they're not the same person they're almost certainly related, because their voices sound more or less identical to each other to my ears.

chasedad -- I am checking with some others on this as well -- one of whom is known for identifying voices for various legal and historical stuff...

I have not been confident in the "realness" of this name but as each day passed by I was gradually accepting it Smile

Below are two of the newspaper references I have found for the regional theater. One of them mentions Paul McGrath, and I have a strong suspicion is was THE Paul McGrath from Inner Sanctum , CBS soaps in the 1950s, and Suspense in the final years.
His IMDb page is at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
He would have been about 56 for this time in Suspense. He died in 1987.

I see that Ted Osborne's IMDb TV and films credits don't extend past 1959. Paul McGrath also has an Internet Broadway Database entry with credits running into the early 60's, so, yes, this is almost certainly the same actor. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] He played the executive who was driven by Andy Griffith into having a heart attack in "A Face in the Crowd" (1957), so the role of an executive wouldn't have been novel to him.

Rita Lloyd, another "Suspense" performer from this era, also appeared in this Bucks County production. And M. Emmett Walsh! To be able to go back in time to see this production!
