This Is America's Music
January 4, 1953

In the series premiere of This is America's Music, Don Gillis explains the intent of the "we point with pride" program to showcase, "a musical heritage that is as rich and full and all-encompassing as the world has yet seen, and that from the outpourings of Americans has come music that is worthy, is great and necessary." He encourages listeners to write in with what they think "is a good first class working definition of what is American music?" This program features:

Jubilee Overture - George Whitefield Chadwick
Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen
Symphony in Jazz - Otto Cesana
From the Winter's Past - Wayne Barlow
Dance, Music for the Theatre - Aaron Copland
An American Lullaby - Duke Ellington
Fugue, Five Portraits - Virgil Thompson
White Peacock - Charles Griffes
Saturday Night - Elie Siegmeister

The WNYC Forum of the Air. March 27, 1938. WNYC, New York City. "Propaganda, Dictatorship and Democracy". An "informal" round table discussion. A time tone is heard at 16 seconds after the hour. If the program continued, this is an incomplete recording. It's possible that the moderator was not aware of the program's time length and was cut off the air. Tony Marvin (announcer), Robert Spears (Professor at NYU), Ferdinand Lundberg (formerly a financial writer for the New York Herald Tribune), Clyde Beales (formerly of the New York Times, now editor of, "The Guild Reporter"), Clyde Miller (moderator, Institute of Propaganda Analysis), Claude Robinson (American Institute of Public Opinion). 1:00:17.

A real old one. Part of a series of concerts broadcast live from Hunter College. This edition of the Adolph Lewisohn concert series features the Artist's Trio: Yascha Fisberg, violin; Rudolph Sims, cello; and Nicholas Stember, piano. Concert features selections from Rosowsky, Mendelssohn and Beethoven as well as music history and appreciation lectures from Dr. Fleck. There is an amusing description of Herman Neuman's ("a hard man") favorite piece from a festival being the overture to "Midsummer Night's Dream" despite its supposed lack of weight.

Helen Keller is honored at a dinner on the eve of her departure for a tour of South Asia. The event, as well as her travel, is hosted by the American Foundation for Overseas Blind, Inc. According to an article in the New York Times on February 2, 1955, "The blind and deaf educator and author, who is 74 years old, will leave this Friday on a 40,000-mile tour of India, Pakistan, Burma, the Philippines and Japan... Its purpose is to inspire the expansion of facilities for the assistance of the sightless and hard of hearing."

Douglas Edwards, CBS News Anchor, hosts the event.
