Right after her first victory at Wimbledon, WNYC aired this official reception for tennis star Althea Gibson. Gibson won 11 grand slam tournaments during her career, was the first black athlete of either gender to break into the international tennis world, and many have called her one of the greatest tennis players of all time. At this reception, Mayor Robert F. Wagner awards her with a special medal of honor from the city of New York.

Sam Hayes Tribute
Sam Hayes (Samuel Stewart Hayes) was born November 2, 1904, in Cookesville, Illinois. He was a Los Angeles radio news and sportscaster of the 1930s & '40s. He also played a radio broadcaster in a number of movies. Hayes died at age 53 following a heart attack on July 28, 1958.

Don Wilson and Harry Von Zell open the show singing a duet about the profession of announcing. Roy Rogers delivers a monologue about the Shriners...to Trigger! Spike Jones does his usual spectacular arrangement of, "Laura" and "The Hawiian War Chant." Robert Montgomery speaks from Encino by wire recording. His wife Dinah Shore is right next to him but can't sing or even speak due to laryngitis. She doesn manage "Chopsticks" on the piano. The recording continues with the start of "Gangbusters" after the Shriners program: "The Case Of The Block Chief Burglar." Commissioner Lewis J. Valentine speaks by shortwave from Tokyo. 27:38 to the end of the Shriners program, 30:26 total.
