Right after her first victory at Wimbledon, WNYC aired this official reception for tennis star Althea Gibson. Gibson won 11 grand slam tournaments during her career, was the first black athlete of either gender to break into the international tennis world, and many have called her one of the greatest tennis players of all time. At this reception, Mayor Robert F. Wagner awards her with a special medal of honor from the city of New York.

Sam Hayes (Samuel Stewart Hayes) was born November 2, 1904, in Cookesville, Illinois. He was a Los Angeles radio news and sportscaster of the 1930s & '40s. He also played a radio broadcaster in a number of movies. Hayes died at age 53 following a heart attack on July 28, 1958.

Saturday at the Shamrock was a live radio program that was broadcast from 1949 to 1953, and aired across 450 U.S. radio stations and 39 in Canada. It was the first radio program to be aired nationally from Texas. The weekly show was recorded in the Emerald and Shamrock Rooms at Glen McCarthy’s Shamrock Hotel and aired locally through KXYZ (also owned by McCarthy). During its run, it featured a steady stream of talent, such as Humphrey Bogart, Lberace, Danny Kaye, Jack Benny, Burns and Allen, Merv Griffin, and Dinah Shore, along with emcee Fred Nahas.
