Ask the Composer
July 2, 1944
Béla Bartók

An interview with Béla Bartók, in English, at the the Brooklyn Museum sculpture garden. Ditta Pasztory (Bartók's wife) played piano-solo pieces and the piano part in the Tibor Serly transcription for piano and strings by Mikrokosmos. David LaVita is the commentator/interviewer and musicologist employed by the museum, and his questions referred to music played by Ditta. Bartók speaking first discussed the Sonatina, then the Suite op. 14 and the innovations in his compositions for the piano of the mid-1910s, going on to the first Rondo (mistakenly speaking of 1932 instead of 1927), the two themes of Evening in Transylvania which are in the style of Hungarian folk songs, and finally Mikrokosmos. This was part of several part series from the Brooklyn Museum. With Tibor Serly on piano there is a performance with a string quartet of a selection from the Mikrokosmos-suite.

Big Jeff' and The Radio Playboys. August 23, 1948. WLAC, Nashville. Big Jeff's Hymn Book. 6:00 A.M. The first tune is, "Green Light." Charlie (the announcer) and Big Jeff chat about the weather. The control-man/performer is referred to as, "Dopey." Jeff sings, a hymn, "Give Me Roses While I Live." The book of hymns is available from Big Jeff for only 35 cents. The music is okay, but the Radio Playboys have a lot of laughs. which makes the show a delight. "Dopey" plays, "Lovesick Blues" on a tipple. This kind of radio is gone forever...too bad. The first 15:12 of the program. Bill Martin (bass); Herman Coleman (?); Speedy Grissom (? fiddle); Jeff Bess (?)

From Goldin: Black Night. September 25, 1951. ABC net. Sustaining. A late-night stroll around the city of Chicago. Using one voice in the darkness, it's an excellent mood piece in the style of Paul Frees or Ken Nordine, that might be called (if you're feeling poetic), "The Loneliness Of The Big City." Good late-night radio. Claire Walsh ; Rex Maupin (conductor); Lou Perkins (director); Don Moreland (vocalist); Jean Mowry; Bob Savage (writer); The ABC Orchestra.
