I Love a Mystery
Hi everyone,
I seem to have stumbled across a "lost" episode of I Love a Mystery, but I need assistance at figuring out the exact date. It seems to be from the 1951 series of "The Pirate Loot of the Island of Skulls." The very short summaries of episodes in Martin Gram's ILAM Companion only summarize the 1942 series, which were half an hour, while the 1951 series had 26 fifteen-minute episodes. So, I'm not positive about the date.
This is from the KVNU audio recordings, 1943-1959 archival collection. Here's a direct link to the episode they have posted there:

This is very interesting. It certainly was "hidden" under the listing of "Christmas International Harvester" and "Love a Mystery Radio Story". This could be a great find

Re: I Love a Mystery
Good Afternoon:
This is a great find ! It is indeed a definite show from the The Pirate Loot Of The Island of Skulls (6-15 to 7-18-51; 24 ep.)
It is difficult to record it while listening to it because it keeps stopping and then restarting after a period of time with dead air.
From what I was able to hear, it definitely was the 1951 cast and the cast was listed towards the end of the clip.

Keep your searching up and you may find something else.
Best regards

Re: I Love a Mystery
While we're on the topic, here is a partial episode from 1940 "The Tropics Don't Call it Murder," posted at the Country Music Hall of Fame's digital archives. It's been posted there a long time, but I don't know how widely circulating this one is:

Re: I Love a Mystery
A topic that often comes up in relation to ILAM is why so many recordings lack opens and closes.
This note was found in the Joe Hehn reels. It turns out that those recordings never circulated in an intact manner. Jim Harmon, author of "The Great Radio Heroes" book, who got the discs from Morse, seemed to have removed them after he recorded them from the disc transfers that Burns made (he's the one who wrote the note). The note is to Marty Halperin, legendary early collector, who would later run Pacific Pioneers where all the CBS stuff we enjoy would eventually reside. The note is likely from the period of 1968-1972, our hobby's formative years.
We'll never know why Harmon did that other than speculating that the listening experience would be better without suffering through openings and closings (which our generation does not consider to be a burden) and have one continuous story play (or as much of a continuous play as possible). It could also be that the cost of recording tape was an issue.
This note describes the frustration...

Re: I Love a Mystery
This IS a great find! Episodes of ILAM are a rarity, so this is a real treasure. Thanks for the detective work done in tracking this one down.
How interesting to discover that Tony Randall stayed on with the show for at least a little while after they had run out of scripts featuring Reggie. "Secret Passage to Death" was the last story in the Hollywood run to feature Reggie, and, like the Hollywood series, "Pirate Loot" was the second story in the NY run dramatized after that one. The closing announcements in this "Pirate Loot" episode still state "...and Tony Randall as Reggie York", even though Reggie is now absent and Randall actually plays the ship's steward.

Re: I Love a Mystery
I was just looking through one of my ILAM folders, and found the "lost" episode I posted about a few days ago in one of my folders dated as 06-26-51 (which would make it Chapter Eight). Apparently I got the file 2 years ago, but I have no recollection of finding that archive before or if I or someone else decided on that date. I'm not sure if that's an accurate date, but thought I'd share it.

The "lost" episode according to the script is June 25, 1951 Episode 7.
Most of the scripts are at Sperdvac
