Some of The Whistler titles are amusing because of the way they use the word "death," a startling negative concept, and then match it up with something like "phone call" which has no connotation or a neutral one. Many titles for The Whistler are similar to titles of The Shadow in this regard, using "death" or "murder" in many of them. For some reason this particular title made me remember a scene from the TV series Just Shoot Me that featured SNL's Cheri Oteri...

Los Angeles radio critic Allen Rich wrote about the in-studio production of this broadcast in his column. It was posted a little while ago, and is worth reading as you listen to this episode.

The Whistler was a CBS Pacific Network program, but the rest of the country really knew it as a series of movies. Then, in 1946, a sustained version of the series replaced The Jack Carson Show for the Summer, WBBM in Chicago broadcast its own performances, until Household Finance sponsored the program in the non-Pacific areas. The movies kept going... and the character's haphazard path to national recognition could now be celebrated with a song!
For your listening pleasure, The Modernaires present The Whistler Song (1947)

That's The Whistler's call, and he knows it all
So remember that he's checking on you.
When the sins begin, that's when he drops in
So look out for him whatever you do.
Oh he knows about him, and he knows about her
And he knows about this and that
Every big guy in the FBI
Says he never whistles through his hat.
If you've got some clues to the latest news
Will you do a little favor for me?
Mr. Whistler, can you tell me where my baby can be?
That's The Whistler, that's his call
So remember that he's checking on you.
That's The Whistler, knows it all
Look out whatever you do.
Mr. Whistler, what you see?
Can you tell me where my baby can be?
Oh he knows about him, and he knows about her
He knows about this, knows about that
Every big guy in the FBI
Says he never whistles through his hat.
If you've got some clues to the latest news
Will you do a little favor for me?
Mr. Whistler...
Tell me, tell me, tell me...
Tell me where my baby can be!

I had already had these clippings but researcher Karl Schadow brought my attention to something important I had missed, and it's a big oversight. Just one little but important sentence. Note the top of the second column of the first item. The Whistler is "always" attributed to J. Donald Wilson. More accurately, the program is what Wilson did. But the character that was the seed of the idea was from someone else whose identity is lost to the ages.

My goodness! The title sounds like it was developed by a cruciverbalist!
(Yeah, that's a real word!)
There's a great documentary about the subject, Wordplay, released in 2006/2007

The title is based on the late 17th century British saying "marry in haste, repent in leisure." In many Whistler tales it's "murder in haste, repent in prison"!

That's the network upgrade. The AFRS version of this episode is very strange, a Frankenstein monster of Whistlerdom. It's got Pacific network wrappers around a WBBM broadcast and stars Everett Clarke as The Whistler. This file is not an upgrade, but some of you may not have it.

This is not as bad as the AFRS recordings that wrap Suspense with Inner Sanctum opens and closes. At least this Whistler one is in the extended family! I got this recording about 9 years ago from Thom Whetston, who has an excellent blog about AFRTS [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and also one on Armed Forces Radio [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
