This upgrades a network recording from a little over a year ago. This was the last time SWN was performed for the series. This is the only performance that was not directed or produced by William Spier. The production was supervised by William N. Robson. Later, the 1960 version used this recording and put "New York Suspense" wrappers around the drama. Press releases were distributed that made it seem like a new performance was done, but it was not.

This program, Dog Star, has never been in satisfactory sound. We take a small step forward here, but not a big one. There's a story behind this episode...

Evenlyn Rudie was a child actor who made a big splash in the Playhouse 90 presentation of Eloise. The character was based on the books by (ex-Mrs. Spier) Kay Thompson... so there's always a connection to Suspense history.

She wasn't really supposed to speak in P90; Kay Thompson was supposed to speak all of her lines off camera. As the rehearsals went on during the week, it was decided to give her a chance. It worked... and at six years old, Rudie had an Emmy nomination! As she grew older, she concentrated on her education, writing, and theatrical work.

There is a condensed version of the presentation on YouTube in two parts. The person who posted it did the edits, but P90 got constant complaints (despite its legendariness) about the number and length of its commercial interruptions, so just eliminating commercials helps shorten it all. But the poster went further and did somehow get it into two 10 minute videos. You do get the gist of the story.

Playhouse 90 -- one of early TV's greatest achievements -- but they soon learned that live TV was very costly and had all kinds of risks... including the time when the flu went through one of the casts before its broadcast day.

There are very few Playhouse 90 programs available, but this link at YouTube can help [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Many of the scripts and music are tied up in various copyright, music, and ownership issues, so no one really bothers to pursue getting them released. It's an incredible story, nonetheless, soon to be detailed in a new book... more details sometime later in the year.

Here are some items related to Eloise and Rudie... including the text of her letter to the NY Times 47 years after the broadcast!

This is the letter that Rudie wrote to the NYT. It was published May 25, 2003. Note she mentions producer Martin Manulis... who was also involved in producing Suspense on TV just a couple of years before. Note also the cross country plane flight that Kay and Evelyn were on -- almost half a day to do it then -- and I hope Kay didn't have anything important in her handbag...
To the Editor:

Anita Gates, repeating a now familiar tale, writes that Kay Thompson hated the 1956 Playhouse 90 adaptation of her book Eloise so much "that she vowed that neither movies nor television would ever put their filthy hands on her precious Eloise again" [A Suite and the City: Eloise's New York, April 27].

Here's what really happened. Kay, who wrote the Playhouse 90 version herself and appeared in it as a hotel guest, was also supposed to do the voice of Eloise. Since it was a live show, the little girl playing the part would cover her mouth or turn her head away when she had a line. Kay would crawl near the camera and speak in the direction of the microphone. This was choreographed and practiced for three weeks.

At 1 a.m. the day of the broadcast, the girl's parents got a call from the producer, Martin Manulis. He and the director, John Frankenheimer, had been going around and around all night. "It just doesn't work," he said. "Do you think your daughter can speak the lines herself?"

There was a dry run that morning, and the little girl did fine (as she would that night). No sooner was the dry run finished than Kay appeared on the set with a cadre of lawyers and piles of new contracts. No reruns, no sequels, no marketing, in her lifetime. The little girl's representatives had to agree that while she could say in her publicity materials that she had played Eloise, she could never say that she was Eloise. "I am Eloise," Kay said bluntly. ''No one else. Ever. Not as long as I live."

Kay was a fabulous woman, an incredibly talented entertainer and an icon for little girls who grew up to be the liberated teenagers of the 60's and 70's. She was kind-hearted, a good friend and an amazing shopping partner. She loved the cast of that Playhouse 90 production, couldn't speak highly enough of Frankenheimer, was excited by the new songs and choreography she had created and charmed by the little girl she had befriended. She came to her just before airtime and said: "You cannot imagine how difficult this is for me. I love you so much. But I am Eloise. I can't help it."

I loved Kay Thompson dearly -- from the moment I auditioned for her and was selected to play Eloise. The publicity trip to New York was my first plane ride, 11 1/2 hours with horrible turbulence. As the stewardesses opened the doors and the photographers began shooting, I had to throw up. Kay turned me around, held open her handbag and said, "In here!" We were best buddies from then on.

Today's episode is upgraded from 6+ years ago. For some reason, the copy that is around has a shortened opening monologue.

This is also the script that Robson selected to be the last Hollywood production of Suspense on 1959-08-23, only 10 months from this broadcast.

The last upgrade of today's episode was four years ago. Every once in a whole Robson was able to get some of the big (but sometimes waning) Hollywood stars to be on the show. The Masons had not appeared on Suspense since Queen's Ring 1953-12-28. (That was three producers ago! Lewis, Macdonnell, Ellis). Once his producership was getting some traction, Robson did ask the CBS execs for some extra budget to get higher profile stars, and he did get it. It always helps to have advertisers footing the bill.

The ads are intact in the network copy, and it's good to underscore that they're advertisers, not sponsors, in the most narrow definition. When Roma and Auto-Lite sponsored the show, they paid for everything and had editorial approval of scripts and could approve casting (unless Spier stared them down, as in the singular casting of Lena Horne without a co-star; Lewis had less success getting his way, with John Garfield and Howard Duff as examples of advertiser cast-meddling). In the post-Auto-Lite era, advertisers bought time and audience size and had no such other form of input.

There are no new newspaper clippings. It is worth noting that all of the clippings found previously for this broadcast have the title as "The Dealings of Dr. Markham."

It's been a while, but this is the first John Dickson Carr script used, excluding Pit and the Pendulum (in 1957), since January 1948 during the hour long series when they broadcast the still-missing Bet with Death. Pit would be done once more, in 1959. The Markham story was last presented in June 1945.

The script is a repeat of 1946-01-24; many newspapers list A Statement of Fact for this date. Suspense returns to Sunday evening after a few weeks on Saturdays to allow affiliates to broadcast NFL football for their areas. This was a live broadcast... they're slowly fading away... and this might be the very last one. We can't tell for certain because not all of the script cover pages are available.

Today's episode stars Agnes Moorehead and received virtually no publicity... The most curious thing is that the original title was "'M' is for the Million Things" before it was changed to Don't Call Me Mother. Robson was always sneaking biographical stuff into his stories... yikes! You almost wonder if the first title was an inside joke to himself... and he had not come up with the other in time to give it to the publicity department. No matter. They were barely caring over there by this point...

This network recording replaces an LQ recording -- it's never been available in good sound. This is much better.

Today's AFRS recording has not been updated for 13 years. Now, the network and AFRS versions of this episode have about the same sound quality.

Today's episode is still in great need for one good file... or one clean AFRS disc...

Lloyd Bridges was hot in his career for Sea Hunt at this time, and Robson took advantage of it with this underwater episode. The series was very popular and there are many episodes available on YouTube.

This is today's updated file. It's still an LQ copy of the recording that has the complete opening with Robson's intro.

This is a better recording that was posted about a year ago but it has no open or close. It's better but that's not saying much.

This is another recording that was posted about 18 months ago. Its only redeeming feature is that it's an aircheck. It, too, has disappointing sound.

This is a curious episode for its network ID close. This is the upgrade of the recording that ends with "this is the CBS Radio Network."

But we have two other recordings, previously posted...

This one says "get the complete news first..."

This other one has the news with Richard C. Hottelet at the end... at the end of Suspense, it says "this is the CBS Radio Network."

Why are there two closings? I have no idea... Did CBS feed the program to affiliates twice at different times?

These clippings are new...

Today's episode has not been updated for more than 9 years. It's still LQ, but more listenable.

This episode is about a yacht race and was scheduled to coincide with the 1959 Honolulu Yacht Race... Scripter Sam Pierce was on one of the boats as a crewmember of the Queen Mab; results below.

This is the last (for now, of course) of the CBS Hollywood upgrades. We have a lot of New York upgrades to follow that will take us to the end of February. Then we'll have a little break as we jump over to Whistler and YTJD upgrades for a couple of weeks. And then... back to the beginning of Suspense!

Queen Mab finished last in its division... reminds me of the old "I was in the top 90% of my high school class"
