The Romance of Helen Trent Empty The Romance of Helen Trent

Post by scooper 12/12/2023, 12:53 am

A happy accident. While searching for another show, I stumbled upon this site:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

There I found 8 episodes of The Romance of Helen Trent. These are the dates I was able to verify from the listing and the original recorder's on air dating. Unfortunately, I did not find the show I was looking for, but wanted to share my find. They are easily downloadable. The dates are:

07 16 1959
07 17 1959
07 27 1959
08 10 1959
08 14 1959
08 18 1959
08 19 1959
09 17 1959
07/16 and 07/17 are on one as well as 08/18 and 08/19 are on one download. ENJOY!

Here are the Helen Trents

Some of the dates are identified by Lawrence Lipton at the beginning.
There are two with the date 59-08-14. The one labeled 59-08-14 2 is identified by Lipton. Have at it.

Helen Trent 59-07-16 is a wrong date. At the end of the show, the announcer says that the show will return on Monday, implying it is a Friday. July 16, 1959 was a Thursday. I haven't listened to them but maybe July 16 and 17 are reversed?

I listened to them and they're not reversed. In the first one she meets a guy who's been hanging around on the beach and learns his name is Peter. In the next episode her relationship with this Peter guy seems to have progressed. The episodes are in the right order but the story jumps forwards a little suggesting they're not consecutive as the dates suggest.

I've not listened to the others yet, but OP mentions the date 08 18 1959 but it's 08 17 - Lipton announces it over the opening seconds.

Clicking that digitallibrary link and changing the search terms to "Helen Trent" pulls up one more episode (in the "lipton-115" file): 1959 September 24.

I re-dated the 1959.07.16 episode to 1959.07.10. As has been said, the closing announcement indicates it's a Friday, plus there's enough of a gap in the storyline between it and the 1959.07.17 episode that it needs moving a few episodes earlier in any case. I'll assume the 10 in the date was misread as 16.

There are two dated 1959.08.14. From the storyline they seem to be consecutive episodes so I made the earlier one 1959.08.13. This makes sense as the other side of the tape (presumably originally side 1) was recorded on 1959.08.13, so it's logical that that was recorded first, then the tape turned for the Helen Trent episodes.

Plus there's one more episode not uncovered in the earlier postings.

Now I've listened to all 10 episodes they make a nice set and you can follow the storyline pretty well, and although some threads are resolved nicely it leaves it on a cliffhanger that we may never know how it turns out.

1959
July 10,17,27
Aug 10,13,14,17,19
Sep 17,24

(I don't know what others use but I used mp3directcut to cut the episodes from the other stuff on the tapes because it allows you to cut the files without any re-encoding.)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Do we know, does Lawrence Lipton play one of the characters?

How many more episodes are available? I know of 13 episodes (and 8 of those are undated). Any others?

U of Michigan has three more from 1950 and five Aunt Jennys. All are digitized, but you have to be on campus to access them. I live in Massachusetts, so not likely!

Ah there's tons of archives like that. It seems silly when it's something so obscure. They're holding history hostage from a very tiny amount of people who might want to listen.

i just stumbled upon a Helen Trent that doesn't seem to follow any of the plotlines I can find; seems like it MIGHT be prefatory to the June 1944 episodes concerning Helen trying to nail Gil down on a wedding date? Hoping someone who's been giving this show more attention may have some insight or recognize it as an existing episode otherwise:

Yes it's a "new" one. The detail about Drew Sinclair being in a sanitarium with a mental illness would be a major clue except Drew Sinclair doesn't appear in any of the other available episodes.  It'd probably be rash to place it shortly before those three June 44 episodes because Gil Whitley was in the show for years and probably wooed her many times.

Out of interest where does the "could be 440326" date in the filename come from?  (The trail at the end says be sure not to miss Mondays episode making this a Friday episode, and 440326 is a Sunday.)

Ummm... my bad on the "possible date". Having no familiarity with the series, I just reasoned that the plotline I heard had to take place SOME time prior to June 1944. In thrashing about seeking answers, I found myself looking at an old OTRR log that showed an existing episode... sans any title or plot summary... for that March '44 date. Given what you've presented, it's almost certainly incorrect. Thanks for your observations. Glad it's new but sorry we can't place it properly!
