Re: GI Journal
Not only does Kay Kyser serve as editor a whole bunch... but his band even shows up when he's NOT tasked with churning out the "news". Here they're the musical backup for Bob Hope:

He's right back in the saddle on this one, for which there is no AFRS closing.

Re: GI Journal
And yet AGAIN, in this offering from February 1944. If Jimmy Durante were here, he'd vociferate "This is gettin' monotonous!".

Re: GI Journal
Mackenzie lists Bob Hope as the MC of this next one. Well Bob sure looks cute masquerading as the beautiful Linda Darnell, who pushes Kay out of the way for her first foray into the editor in chief position.
Could do with an upgrade on this one please.

Re: GI Journal
I Know That You Know that we have to have a Kay Kyser-led show every two or three, and this is it:

And now der Bingster elbows Kay out of the way and launches into I-O-Way.

I thought I had posted this yesterday morning. Must have not hit the send key - I was in a rush!

Well, at least if a little late you were able to attempt yet another Kyser-related witticism. I was going to try to come up with something lame about "sand" but decided that would be... pushing it.

Sorry guys, no fills or upgrades. In fact I just grabbed a couple I didn't have at all. I'm wondering if you could check your last post. I show the date for Journal 38 as 1944-04-07.

The trouble with these Geezer is that we really don't have an absolute date on them. AFRS typically didn't etch dates on ETs for their own productions and GI Journal is an AFRS only show as you know. The best we have is Harry Mackenzie's listing which, as far as I know, used AFRS listings that had recording dates posted on most, but not all of the shows. Additionally David Goldin's list applies somewhat of a double check when he has a copy of the program.
In this case, Goldin doesn't have it and I missed an error - Mackenzie has April 1, not March 31. Soooooo I'll change the date to 1944-04-01 until proven otherwise. Fair?

Re: GI Journal
Am in dialogue with Mike re the #38 post from yesterday... please note an update on the file info may (or may not) be forthcoming after we discuss.
Jack is back in this one and someone named "Carmene" shows up to provide some Latin support:
GI Journal (040) 1944-04-21 Jack Carson - Singing In The Rain

Re: GI Journal
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
Kurt is correct. I goofed with that #38 that posted yesterday. The recording came from an ET that had #37 on the label. The file name included (could be #38) included and I matched that up with Mackenzie's list that showed the program as #38, totally forgetting about the label.
So let me change #38 to be #37 and the date to be 1944-03-27.
My apologies. But then that's why we go through these at a slow pace and why we have a double check. I'll also correct the post above for the file name.

Re: GI Journal
I believe that Carmene, mentioned previously, was Mrs Skinnay Ennis at the time. Her fullname was Carmene Calhoun. Now that's a combo for you.
Back with Bing again on this one.

Re: GI Journal
Today's guest editor is Bob Hope; this one includes several Glenn Miller performances recorded over several dates from March 25 through April 22 of '44, so they are pretty contemporaneous with the rest of the show:

Re: GI Journal
According to Bing Crosby, it's going to be a Great Day. But one man's ceiling is another man's floor, and today's my day to work through the annual Christmas tree ritual, starting in the frigid wastes of northwest New Jersey, so...

And really, if you want to hear "Great Day" sung PROPERLY, you absolutely gotta go Nelson Eddy. With Nelson, you either go have a Great Day or he's gonna come kick some butt.
