Sharing Shows from my collection - Page 39 Empty Re: Sharing Shows from my collection

Post by greybelt 5/26/2021, 11:24 am

Here are some recreations with real radio stars that should be of interest to Cobaltians around the galaxy and beyond. I just processed these recordings when I found one of the recreations was of a missing Casey! It starts Staats Cotsworth himself! I had not seen this one before. Some of the recordings have kicked around for a while, but these versions sound so much better.

This is the link
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I wrote the four recreations up for archive.org and am posting the notes here for your convenience...

Over the July 4, 1975 holiday, WBZ in Boston was part of a Muscular Dystrophy radiothon that included recreations of radio programs. The event was held at Dunphy's resort in Hyannis on Cape Cod. Radio stars and technical artists traveled from New York and California to be part of the event. The event used scripts of the era.

Casey, Crime Photographer
Death of a Rattlesnake originally aired on December 17, 1945. The script was actually a re-use of the April 10, 1945 script Account Settled but was renamed for the second broadcast. The recreation stars Staats Cotsworth, who played the role for most of its radio run. None of the other original cast members were in the recreation, but it featured Vicki Vola (Mr. District Attorney), Marvin Miller (The Whistler), Frank Nelson (many comedic roles, especially Jack Benny), and Betty Wragge (Pepper Young's Family). Music was by organist Ashley Miller (numerous radio and TV soap operas, as well as sporting events, especially Madison Square Garden). The program was directed by Ira Ashley (Grand Central Station) with sound effects by Ed Blainey and Walt Gustafson (staff sound effects artists for ABC). This is the only surviving production of this script; the 1940s productions have not survived.

The other recreations do not have such detailed information, but many of the same actors appeared in other productions that weekend.

Cisco Kid
Sniffer Smith originally aired on 1954-01-12, or thereabouts. The series was syndicated and stations had a choice of when to air the program. This recreation stars NY radio veteran and voiceover artist Jackson Beck, one of the greatest and most versatile voices of the era. Beck was the original Cisco Kid but did not have the role for a very long time. Pancho was played in the recreation by Mel Blanc, legendary animation voice of Bugs Bunny and numerous other characters, but also famous for his comedic parts in The Jack Benny Show.

The Shadow
Reflection of Death originally aired on May 9, 1948. The last of the Shadow actors, Bret Morrison, played the role at that time and also in this recreation. Morrison played the role for about a decade.

Nick Carter, Master Detective
Case of the Too Too Careful Killer aired on October 30, 1949. Lon Clark, who had the lead role throughout the series, reprises his role in the recreation. Other cast members include Hedda Muir, Court Benson (Tennessee Jed), and was directed by Warren Somerville (Theater Five, Tales of Tomorrow). This is the only surviving production of this script; the 1949 production has not survived.

Two Alabama State Troopers were chasing a Mustang east on I-20 toward Georgia. When the suspect crossed the Georgia line, the first trooper pulled over quickly.
The rookie trooper pulled in behind him and said, "Hey, Sarge, why did you stop?"
The sarge replied, "Forget it, he's in Georgia now. They're an hour ahead of us, so we'll never catch him."

According to my thermometer, it's 117 degrees and my gauge is in the shade. The microclimate in our canyon is hotter than the valley weather station which is located in the dam control center. That's the coolest place in the valley in the summer and the warmest in the winter. It's right in the middle of the lake dam. I think it's going to be a HOT year. It's 11:30 am. I love the heat, but maybe not this hot LOL.

I used to work in a boiler room in a hospital so I'm used to heat but that is way too hot Tom. considering you had snow a few weeks ago, it seems like a wild difference. We're in a heat wave in Calgary too and will set records this week when it gets to about 88F. Considering, that most of us just got gardens planted in the last week or so, it's pretty crazy.

A few years back Gordon, we had 100 degrees plus and two days later it snowed three inches. The mountains, desert and elevation create their own weather. After the end of June the weather generally settles down to the normal HOT until about the end of September when it cools down to the 80 to 90 degree temps. End of November we usually get our first frost. May to June can be anywhere from snow to 100 plus. And that's in the same week lol. I love the heat and am now at almost 82 years old beginning to feel the cold. I'm turning into a cold weather sissy lol.

An astonished Watson asks, "How on earth did you do that, Holmes?"
"Lemon-entry my dear Watson, Lemon-entry!"
