This episode has never been in the best sound. Processing it from the reel copy seems to have helped..

This next episode has been circulating with patched open and close -- early collectors thought they were “improving” the recording by “restoring” it. They weren’t as far as hobbyists are concerned today. The sound match of the patched items is very difficult to do. If collectors want to “restore” programs in this manner, they should document it in the file name.

Both of these files on the reels were basically the same as what is circulating, but were improved by some additional processing. Better to apply processing to fresh recording that has not undergone aggressive processing than to one that already has.

Two episodes today because these are still LQ recordings with small improvement. The first one is a different AFRS version than is in common circulation. The second one is a network show that is “less bad.” Aggressive processing it netted no improvement so rather than fight it, the file was left the way it was found with only minor touch-up. It’s still better than what seems to be around as it is.

Jerome Thor was not related to Larry Thor. Both adopted “Thor” as their stage names. Jerome’s actual name was Jerome Perlmutter, and his IMDb page is at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] He did a lot of early 1950s TV work. Larry Thor’s name was derived from his last name, Arnlelfur Lawrence Thorsteinson.

The only radio appearances by Jerome Thor that are noted in RadioGoldindex are four Suspense ones in 1958. Larry Thor, one of the more beloved radio actors in the 1950s, is listed 563 times. RadioGoldindex only lists recordings that exist, of course. Larry Thor appeared hundreds more times in uncredited roles.

This is another late 50s episode where it's hard to determine if this is network or AFRTS because it's been edited down so much. It's yet another program where it would be great if we could find an AFRTS disc to get a clean recording.

Just returned from a brief vacation that was a first fruit of retirement travel: catching some spring training games in Florida. We've wanted to do this for decades, and it was great fun. It is amazing how spring training has changed from being watched by a few hundred people who were begged or otherwise prodded to attend to watch players work on their trade in poorly maintained fields to beautiful fields in today's high-tech small stadiums. These are now large minor league training and teaching complexes featuring $20 seats and $12 hamburgers. Smile  MLB has learned to cluster the complexes within reasonable driving distance (they figured this out in Arizona and gradually made it a strategy in Florida, especially on the Atlantic side) so fans can follow their teams day-to-day as home or visiting teams. Access to the minor league complexes means that early in spring training you may see the day's competitive organizations have their better minor league players and some major league players who need more work playing in an early morning game on a side field that is not publicized, and free to watch. Saturday and Sunday games are filled with young families and weekday games are packed with retirees, many of whom traveled far to see their life-long favorite teams and get a break from the colder northern weather at the same time. The crowds have an infectious happy vibe to them. It won't be an annual trip for us, but just these past few days made for some great memories, even if the games don't count.

It also became clear in meeting so many people who have also followed the Mets for more than 50 years that we're not a fan base, we're a support group.

This episode has never been circulating in good sound. There is a better copy in circulation that does not have commercials (probably an edited AFRTS recording), but even that is of lesser quality compared to other episodes from this time period. This complete version is slightly better than the prior intact version in circulation which had significant artifacts from sound processing. This is a better copy than that, but for a better sound experience for the drama itself, the edited version is your likely choice.

Time for a little recap about where we are with the upcoming posts...

Most of the files that follow are upgrades paired with a file that had additional processing. These are still recordings that were transferred from a reel collection assembled in the early and mid-1970s, and were from high-level traders that had material close to original source. That means the files did not come to us after going through many traders or from collectors generations later (not in terms of age, but copies of copies of copies, etc., which introduce hiss and other problems) who may have attempted to clean the files for better listening. That processing combined with the encoding process can introduce defects and new kinds of noise. This is the reason for providing both files.

Many of the files from this era of Suspense have circulated in very bad or sub-par sound for decades. It's been great fun working on them and sharing them. There's about 20 episodes left in this batch.
