Quirky Suspense

Actors and writers sometimes used pseudonyms in their work, especially if they worked on other series with which they were well-identified.

In the 1946 Philomel Cottage and Drive-In episodes, Elliott Lewis is billed as Raymond Lewis! No one knows why. He did have a brother named Raymond. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

On Dark Venture, Arch Oboler's Plays, and others, he is billed as Bruce Elliott. That one makes a little more sense, since his name was Elliott Bruce Lewis.

But this is a source of more confusion --- because there was also a real Bruce Elliott involved in radio, as a newscaster in New York. Here is the RGI page that reports them as one person: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Multiple recordings today...

The first one came to my attention from OTRR FB page member Patte Rosebank in a private message that she remembered seeing a rehearsal recording of Judy Garland in Drive-In. She did not remember where it was from but it was on a Garland fan site. Google to the rescue! Scroll down about halfway at the page [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and you'll see some information about the episode and the recordings of the broadcast and the rehearsal. The broadcast recording is not as clean as the one currently circulating and is a bit slow. I cleaned up the rehearsal recording a little, and I link to that here. There are some dialogue differences between the rehearsal and the broadcast.

This next pair of recordings were posted by collector/performer Dave Lennick on the OTRR FB page as well as his own FB page, Lennick's Lacquers. I have adjusted some of the sound and post them here. These are verified east and west recordings off the network line from a station in Canada. For some unknown reason they recorded both performances. Dave always posts some interesting stuff on his FB page. I hope to interview him one day about his career as a performer (with his family) and as a broadcaster and as a collector.

The common circulating recording of this episode has a patched open. Whoever patched it picked a Roma Wines era open, but picked the wrong one for this particular time in the sponsorship. The patch is gone, the very bad turntable rumble has been reduced, making this copy more listenable.

If this story does not seem "right" for Suspense, you're correct. It has a much different feel than most episodes. This script was first performed on Columbia Workshop. A recording is at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The CW promotion focused on very popular 1930s movie actress Isabel Jewel. Her part was played by June Havoc in Suspense. She and Spier's romance was still young at this point in 1947 (the divorce from Kay Thompson was in process; she was in her Vegas act while establishing residency in Nevada so the divorce could go through there). The part played by Lloyd Nolan in Suspense was played by Jim Backus (us 60s kids know him as Mr. Magoo and Gilligan's Island marooned ultra-rich Thurston Howell, III.) There's a Kay Thompson tie-in here, probably just coincidence, that Backus was a writer on Thompson's 1941 radio program. We've all heard of the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and perhaps radio fans could play "Six Degrees of Kay Thompson" with just as much mind-bending fun.

This script was repeated two additional times on Suspense. This first time, it's just "The Butcher's Wife." The other times it was "Never Steal a Butcher's Wife." Is that a title change? It may have always had the longer title, and it was shortened just for this first broadcast. The long title was used in the press releases. That means the change was likely made sometime a few days before they stood before the microphones.

This is a nice AFRS version that has not been in circulation. It is funny that one of the names used in the story is "Burt Reynolds" who gets a promotion over Moorehead's character's husband... and then there's the chain letter...

Hello! I'm a total newbie to this site so please forgive my ignorance - I was wondering if there's anywhere that the upgraded episodes on this thread are archived for downloading, especially the ones that were on pCloud and whatnot where the links aren't working anymore. I've seen the OTRR Certified collection on Archive.org but I'm assuming most of the improved quality copies here haven't made their way over there yet as I think the collection was last updated in 2012? Thank you to anyone who can help! Smile

FYI Crunklydunks and others who may be wondering -- all of these updates will be in a new OTRR set sometime in the future. That date is unknown since upgrades and new versions keep being found. That pace will slow sometime later this year when it will make sense to use this master set and update the OTRR archive.org one. OTRR does need volunteers to help with uploading and other aspects of series maintenance. So please, volunteer, if you can, at the OTRR Facebook page to help out on this and other series.
