Re: Suspense Upgrades
Greetings all -- @ the last version of CC I could get an idea of how many people were enjoying these Suspense posts by taking a peek at the "thanks" clicks. This forum does not have that. The pCloud download stats indicate there are about 25 Cobaltians following this thread.
There was only 1 download of the latest version of the "Missing Suspense" document at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] It's a worthwhile read, with lots of improvements compared to any versions you might have seen in the past. It's a PDF file.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Thanks, Old Sport, for continuing the Suspense thread. I don't suppose you've found the "lost" episode dated September 31, 1945 called "Aroma of Death," starring Robert Donat, Veronica Lake and Zasu Pitts, have you?
The story revolves around the keeper of a vineyard (Donat) who hitches up with a femme fatale (Lake) who's the heiress of a cork factory. They embark on a torturous, torrid affair, though the heiress keeps calling out his name thinking he's disappeared because her hair keeps falling over one eye. I don't want to give away the surprise ending, but when the vinter is drowned in a vat of Viognier the heiress is haunted by purple footfalls in her bedroom, the scent of wine wafting through her sheets. (That's the "Aroma"--A R-O-M-A)
Let me know if you find it. What a spooky story.
Jeff

That story gives me the willies, Ghemrats!
Kdmarket -- thanks for the detective work in the show documentation. I did have that recording without the clipped open -- but there's more to it than the Boy Scouts... there are two versions of the shows with different openings. The first one says "Now, Roma Wines present..." and the other is "Now, the Roma Wine Company of Fresno..." The first one has the Boy Scouts promo. It's a noisier recording than the other. The second one is in better sound and does not have the promo. Why? Probably because they were short on time and they x'd it out of the script while the show was in progress. These are probably East and West preformances, but we have no clue which is which. Thanks for catching another quirk that I had missed!

There are two versions of this episode. This is the network recording. The other is an aircheck that can be identified by some station drift at around the 11m mark. The station drift sounds like crosstalk common on old reel-to-reel recordings but it is not.

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Hi ghemrats:
Just curious about the "lost" episode dated September 31, 1945 called "Aroma of Death," starring Robert Donat, Veronica Lake and Zasu Pitts.... Can't find any listing of this title in any logs that I have seen and I'm curious about the date. September only has 30 days.
Any further info?
Best regards

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Art -- the mischievous Ghemrats was at it again. September has only 30 days, the first clue. And "Aroma" was a play on "Roma" -- and the cast is a joke too. Unlikely guest casts would wait a few more years for "The Big Show" on NBC

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Ooooh, thanks for clearing that up, Greybelt. I had the date all wrong--it was November 31, not September. And for the record, I had the story wrong too.
The real story was called "Maid In California, For Enjoyment Throughout The World" starring Charles Bickford, Mary Pickford and Ford Prefect. The story followed a young mute domestic (perfect casting for Mary Pickford, who cannot be heard in this episode) hired by a crusty but benign wine bottler (Bickford) who is totally unaware of the horrible secret his charge holds: She used to be a continent-hopping "good time girl." But now she's been getting disturbing notes from a traveling stranger who threatens to expose her, not that she hasn't done that herself all over the globe. And what is the meaning of the mysterious note saying "The Answer is 42"?
Oh man, it's a chiller. Do you have that one?
Jeff

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Ghemrats, do you have a good copy of the February 30, 1947 show? Mine has a lot of hiss and scratch.
(this date stuff is even funnier because Suspense did air a show "32nd of December")

Re: Suspense Upgrades
Sorry, Old Sport, the only episode of Suspense labeled "Hizzenscratch" I've got is a truncated AFRS version coming in at around 21:00 with no closing billboard. But if a better version comes available out there, I'd love to get it--it was based on an old HP Lovecraft story with the titular character being an evil spirit trapped in the body of a cat.
I think it was done previously on Inner Sanctum (June 31, 1942), but the scripters renamed the cat "Spitzenyowl" and the title of the episode was "Cat Got Your Tongs?" as the story was set in an ice factory.
The quests continue.
Jeff
