I was more than a little surprised to see this thread reactivated today since the originator, Theo44, otherwise known as Gary Hart passed away in June of 2013.

He was a great collector and I enjoyed talking with him on the phone usually every week.

Air Raid Alert Drill. December 13, 1952. WNYC, New York City origination. The announcer says that this drill is "official." Take shelter but leave your loudspeakers turned on. This announcement is being heard on all city stations, but the drill is only for the Bronx. "Your Civil Defense will be only as good as you make it." Sirens and alerts are heard during the broadcast, an "All-Clear" is heard at the conclusion. This broadcast might be dated December 21, 1952. Holocaust Remembrance Day. April 19, 1944. WNYC, New York City. A remote from New York City's City Hall. On the first anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, many mourners walked silently from the Warsaw Ghetto on nearby Rivington Street, to City Hall. The program starts with Cantor Moishe Oysher chanting, "El Maleh Rachamim" (the Hebrew prayer for the dead). Isaac Rubinstein (Chief Rabbi of Warsaw) says, "A year ago, the remnant of what had been the greatest Jewish community in Europe decided to offer armed resistance to the brutal German murderers." "Against heavy odds, they resolved to fight. Not in defense of their lives, for there was no chance to win the battle. It was harder to save the dignity of their people and to wake the conscience of humanity."
